iOS 6.0 was the first release of Apple's emoji font that was part of the Unicode Standard. Previous releases of iOS supported emoji characters in the private use area of Unicode.

374 new emojis were added in this update. In addition, a number of minor changes were made to emoji images in this update, such as the gavel becoming a hammer.

This emoji update also applies to Macs with OS X 10.7 Lion.

About Apple Emojis

Apple emojis are used on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch and Apple TV. These are included as part of the Apple Color Emoji font.

WhatsApp uses Apple emoji images on all platforms, including Android. Custom stickers available in the iOS 10 Messages app supported for all iMessage users. Apple also has animated emoji stickers on Apple Watch.

Apple platforms also support Private Use Area characters which are not cross-platform compatible. These include:
