Earth Globe Europe-Africa

A stylized representation of a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_Star">shooting star</a>, a small, fast meteor that burns up in the atmosphere. Generally depicted as a gold, five-point star trailing&nbsp;yellow motion lines against a night sky, as if moving down to the left.

May be used for astronomical stars and other content concerning space. Also may be used for flair or flourish. Sometimes used as a visual reference to NBC&rsquo;s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_More_You_Know">More You Know</a> public service announcement, popular in the 1990s and featuring a&nbsp;shooting star logo.

Not to be confused with <a href="/dizzy/">💫 Dizzy</a>, <a href="/star/">⭐ Star</a>, <a href="/glowing-star/">🌟&nbsp;Glowing&nbsp;Star</a>, or <a href="/sparkles/">✨ Sparkles</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Google&rsquo;s star was <a href="/google/android-8.0/shooting-star/">previously</a> trailed, without backdrop, by yellow lines, though these lines&nbsp;were blue in an even <a href="/google/android-7.0/shooting-star/">earlier</a> design. Microsoft&rsquo;s star was also previously&nbsp;trailed, without backdrop, by blue lines, though they were <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/shooting-star/">yellow before</a> that.

Shooting Star

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet">comet</a>, an icy, rocky space object that can form a tail of gas and dust when near the sun. Generally depicted as an icy-blue comet, as if streaking downwards in a night sky.

May be used for meteors and other celestial bodies, as well as for content concerning space more generally. Also occasionally used for flair or flourish.

Not to be confused with <a href="/shooting-star/">🌠 Shooting Star</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Samsung&rsquo;s comet is fiery-red, as is Apple&rsquo;s, which appears to be ascending. WhatsApp&rsquo;s comet is depicted in a starry, night sky, Apple&rsquo;s comet was <a href="/apple/ios-9.1/comet/">previously</a> descending and blue.

May represent extraterrestrial life or topics concerning outer space, but commonly conveys a playful sense of weirdness&nbsp;or strangeness, as if someone or something is&nbsp;out&nbsp;there or&nbsp;from another planet.

Apple previously displayed&nbsp;a similar looking&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.getemoji.com/post/116839074745/what-does-the-alien-emoji-mean-on-ios-its-an">alien head in a box</a> as a placeholder for an unknown emoji, but now shows a boxed question mark.

Extraterrestrial Alien

A friendly-looking, tentacled space creature with two eyes. Most major platforms style their design after aliens in classic arcade games like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Invaders">Space Invaders</a>, rendering it purple and pixellated, as if in 8-bit graphics.

Samsung&rsquo;s design resembles an <a href="/octopus/">octopus</a> and <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/alien-monster/">previously featured</a> a big-brained <a href="/alien/">alien</a>, &agrave; la <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cage_(Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series)">Star Trek</a>. Earlier designs from <a href="/google/android-7.0/alien-monster/">Google</a> and <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/alien-monster/">Microsoft</a> depicted more cartoon-like alien monsters.

May be used of topics concerning extraterrestrial life,&nbsp;outer space, gaming, and computing, but also enjoys a range of idiosyncratic applications, such as&nbsp;conveying a&nbsp;sense of weirdness, wackiness, or excitement, given that the emoji looks like it is raising its arms shouting&nbsp;Yay! on many platforms.

Alien Monster

A telescope, as used to gaze at <a href="/milky-way/">stars</a> and <a href="/ringed-planet/">planets</a> in the night sky. Shown with an optical tube mounted on a tripod, positioned at various angles and generally depicted as metal.

Commonly used for various content concerning astronomy, outer space, celestial objects, and science more generally. May also be used for various concepts of sight (e.g., spying, viewing).

Twitter&rsquo;s designs feature red hardware, as did as an older <a href="/google/android-8.0/telescope/">Google</a>&nbsp;design.

Released on 2021-05-24, this update changed the appearance&nbsp;of the various&nbsp;<a href="/person-climbing/">🧗 Person Climbing</a> emojis to have the person wearing a safety helmet.

iOS 14.6

New emojis from Apple for 2021 available as part of&nbsp;iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, tvOS 14.5, watchOS 7.4, and macOS 11.3.

This Apple emoji update changed the appearance of the&nbsp;<a href="/syringe/">💉&nbsp;Syringe</a>&nbsp;emoji&nbsp;to remove the blood, and added mixed skin tone support to&nbsp;<a href="/kiss/">💏&nbsp;Kiss</a> and <a href="/couple-with-heart/">💑&nbsp;Couple with Heart</a>.

iOS 12.1

iOS 11.3 was a minor update to the iOS emoji set. The main change in this release is the modification of four emojis used in Apple&#39;s separate Animoji feature. iOS 11.3

iOS 11.2 changed a number of emojis, most notably reverting the <a href="/tumbler-glass/">Tumbler Glass</a> to a previous design.

iOS 11.1 was released on October 31, 2017 and&nbsp;includes 240 new emojis&nbsp;including&nbsp;<a href="/giraffe/">Giraffe</a>,&nbsp;<a href="/face-vomiting/">Face Vomiting</a>,&nbsp;<a href="/genie/">Genie</a>,&nbsp;<a href="/sauropod/">Sauropod (dinosaur)</a> and <a href="/emoji-5.0/">more</a>.
