The letter M in a circle, commonly used in to identify a <a title="🚇 Metro" href="/metro/">Metro</a> (subway, underground train) station in a city area.

Circled Latin Capital Letter M

Used in traditional Japanese music such as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noh">Noh</a> or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renga">Renga</a>,&nbsp;to indicate the start of a song. More specifically, the part alternation mark is displayed&nbsp;where the singer&rsquo;s part begins.

This symbol looks sort of like a lopsided capital M;&nbsp;or a <a href="/roller-coaster/" title="🎢 Roller Coaster">rollercoaster</a> track showing a dip, and then a drop off to the right.

Part Alternation Mark

A lowercase letter&nbsp;i, enclosed in a rounded square or circle. Implemented in apps or&nbsp;websites&nbsp;to&nbsp;indicate that help or further information is available.

May be used as a&nbsp;logo for tourist information signage in a town or city.

A metro: frequent underground train found in built-up areas with high populations.

This emoji is generally displayed as a forward-facing train, with some platforms also displaying a tunnel as a circle surrounding the train. Apple&#39;s artwork shows the characters&nbsp;IL2&nbsp;which may be a reference to one of the more <a href="https://www.wired.com/story/apple-infinite-loop-oral-history/">locked-down buildings&nbsp;at Apple&#39;s Infinite Loop</a> Headquarters during iPhone development&nbsp;(IL2 = Infinite Loop 2).

Released on 5 March 2024 for iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4, this was the first version of iOS to support the 118 new emojis in <a href="/emoji-15.1">Emoji 15.1</a>, including various direction-specific people emojis.

This update also changed all family emojis to display with one of the four silhouette symbol designs also used for the new non-gender-specifying family emojis added in <a href="/emoji-15.1">Emoji 15.1</a>.

New emojis from Apple for 2022&nbsp;available as part of&nbsp;iOS 15.4, iPadOS 15.4, tvOS 15.4, watchOS 8.5, and macOS 12.3.

Released on 14&nbsp;March 2022, this was the first version of iOS to support the 112 new emojis in&nbsp;<a href="/emoji-14.0/">Emoji 14.0</a>, including various multiple skin tone versions of the <a href="/handshake/">🤝 Handshake</a> emoji.

This Apple emoji update changed the appearance of the <a href="/face-with-hand-over-mouth/">🤭&nbsp;Face with Hand Over Mouth</a>&nbsp;emoji to be more consistent with the designs of other vendors, with this emoji&#39;s originaly design being given to the new <a href="/emoji-14.0/">🫢 Face with Open Eyes and Hand Over Mouth</a>&nbsp;emoji.

iOS 15.4

Released on 2021-05-24, this update changed the appearance&nbsp;of the various&nbsp;<a href="/person-climbing/">🧗 Person Climbing</a> emojis to have the person wearing a safety helmet.

iOS 14.6

New emojis from Apple for 2021 available as part of&nbsp;iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, tvOS 14.5, watchOS 7.4, and macOS 11.3.

This Apple emoji update changed the appearance of the&nbsp;<a href="/syringe/">💉&nbsp;Syringe</a>&nbsp;emoji&nbsp;to remove the blood, and added mixed skin tone support to&nbsp;<a href="/kiss/">💏&nbsp;Kiss</a> and <a href="/couple-with-heart/">💑&nbsp;Couple with Heart</a>.

Released on 26&nbsp;April 2021, this was the first version of iOS to support the 217 new emojis in&nbsp;<a href="/emoji-13.1/">Emoji 13.1</a>. Taking into account <a href="/glossary/#non-rgi">non-RGI</a> emoji sequences, there&nbsp;there are 669 new emojis in this release.

iOS 14.2

A minor update which fixed a bug where <a href="/apple/ios-13.3/men-holding-hands-medium-skin-tone-medium-dark-skin-tone/">one variation of men holding hands</a>&nbsp;previously showed <a href="/apple/ios-13.2/men-holding-hands-medium-skin-tone-medium-dark-skin-tone/">an incorrect set of skin tones</a>. This change applies to iOS 13.3, iPadOS 13.3 and macOS 10.15.2.

iOS 12.1

iOS 11.3 was a minor update to the iOS emoji set. The main change in this release is the modification of four emojis used in Apple&#39;s separate Animoji feature. First <a href="https://www.apple.com/uk/newsroom/2018/01/apple-previews-ios-11-3/">announced</a> in January&nbsp;2018, this release was finalized in March 2018.

iOS 11.3

iOS 11.2 changed a number of emojis, most notably reverting the <a href="/tumbler-glass/">Tumbler Glass</a> to a previous design.

iOS 11.2

iOS 11.1 was released on October 31, 2017 and&nbsp;includes 240 new emojis&nbsp;including&nbsp;<a href="/giraffe/">Giraffe</a>,&nbsp;<a href="/face-vomiting/">Face Vomiting</a>,&nbsp;<a href="/genie/">Genie</a>,&nbsp;<a href="/sauropod/">Sauropod (dinosaur)</a> and <a href="/emoji-5.0/">more</a>. A number of existing emojis changed in this update, such as <a href="/honeybee/">Honeybee</a>, <a href="/ram/">Ram</a>, and <a href="/tumbler-glass/">Tumbler Glass</a>.
