Microsoft&rsquo;s design <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/envelope-with-arrow/">previously resembled</a> an <a href="/incoming-envelope/">incoming envelope</a>. <a href="/apple/iphone-os-2.2/envelope-with-arrow/">Early designs from Apple</a> featured a right arrow with the envelope oriented lengthwise. Google&#39;s envelope design was <a href="/google/android-8.0/envelope-with-arrow/">previously</a> yellow. SoftBank <a href="/envelope-with-arrow/">originally animated</a> a rightward-moving arrow and envelope, suggesting sending or sent.&nbsp;

A European-style post office. A&nbsp;<a href="/postal-horn/" title="📯 Postal Horn">postal horn</a> can be seen on the front, which is commonly found in the logos of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_national_postal_services#Europe">European Postal Services</a>.

European Post Office

The back of an <a href="/envelope/">envelope</a>, generally shown in white and sealed with a <a href="/red-heart/">red heart</a>. Represents a love letter or note, <a href="/valentines-day/">valentine</a>, or affectionate greeting card. Commonly used to convey various feelings or messages of love and happiness.

Facebook&rsquo;s envelope&nbsp;is pink, while&nbsp;Microsoft&rsquo;s envelope was <a href="/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/love-letter/">previously</a> open.

Love Letter

The back of an envelope, shown coming into an inbox or arriving with motion lines.

Commonly used as an icon for an <a href="/e-mail/">email</a> address. May also represent <a href="/postbox/">posting mail</a> or sending messages more generally.

Apple and WhatsApp&rsquo;s designs include an <a href="/inbox-tray/">inbox tray</a>. Facebook&rsquo;s designs feature a yellow envelope angled forward and trailed by three, blue lines, indicating sending. Google&#39;s design also <a href="/google/android-11.0/incoming-envelope/">previously</a> displayed as a yellow&nbsp;envelope.

Apple&rsquo;s design <a href="/apple/ios-6.0/incoming-envelope/">previously featured</a> three red motion lines, <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/incoming-envelope/">Microsoft&rsquo;s</a> a rightwards arrow.

Google&rsquo;s design <a href="/google/android-8.0/outbox-tray/">previously</a> featured&nbsp;a blue arrow and contained&nbsp;paper.&nbsp;Samsung&rsquo;s arrow was <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/outbox-tray/">previously green</a>.

Outbox Tray

A paper tray with a <a href="/down-arrow/">down arrow</a> on top, as a symbol for an <a href="/e-mail/">email</a> inbox. Generally depicted as a white or wooden try with a red arrow. Samsung and Twitter&#39;s&nbsp;arrows are&nbsp;green,&nbsp;WhatsApp&#39;s gray.

May be used for various digital activity, including downloading, messaging, and emailing.

Facebook&#39;s design contains paper, as did an earlier&nbsp;<a href="/google/android-8.0/inbox-tray/">Google</a>&nbsp;design.&nbsp;

Inbox Tray

A postbox (mailbox, letterbox) with a <a href="/envelope/">letter</a> in its slot for collection. Generally depicted in red with a white envelope, styled after <a href="https://www.japanvisitor.com/japan-travel/japan-residents/japan-post">public postboxes in Japan</a>. May also evoke&nbsp;<a href="http://lbsg.org/photographs/lamp-boxes/">postboxes in the United Kingdom</a>.

Used for various content concerning postal deliveries and <a href="/e-mail/">email</a>. Microsoft&rsquo;s design was <a href="/microsoft/windows-11/postbox/">previously</a> blue, after U.S. mail collection boxes.

Postbox

A postal horn (post horn). Depicted as a coiled, valveless, brass horn, like a bugle or <a href="/trumpet/">trumpet</a>, with two red tassels. Sometimes used to mark announcements as well as for various content concerning brass instruments, music, or mail.

In the 18&ndash;19th centuries, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_horn">post horns</a> signaled the arrival of and cleared the way for mail coaches, like a modern-day&nbsp;<a href="/police-car-light/">siren</a>. Used today as a symbol on <a href="/postbox/">postboxes</a> (mailboxes) and by many European postal services, as seen featured in <a href="/post-office/">🏤 European Post Office</a>.

Released in&nbsp;October&nbsp;2010, Unicode 6.0 was the first version of the Unicode Standard to support emoji.

Some characters in <a href="/unicode-5.2/">prior</a>&nbsp;versions of Unicode were retroactively updated to provide&nbsp;an emoji presentation. This release was the first to introduce new characters for the sole purpose of compatability with emojis being used in Japan.

An emoji set from au by KDDI; a Japanese mobile phone carrier. Using black and white emoji&nbsp;characters&nbsp;<a href="/au-kddi/type-a-2/">from 1999</a>, this set <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-1/">gained animation in the early 2000s</a>&nbsp;before moving to static, <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-3/">high resolution designs</a>.

In 2012, au&nbsp;replaced its custom designs with <a href="/au-kddi/type-f/">a new set</a> heavily inspired by, and designed to be compatible with, emojis from NTT Docomo.

Japanese mobile manufacturer with its own early emoji designs. Discontinued in 2013, replaced by Noto Color Emoji.

First available in May 2012, this emoji set is the first from au by KDDI to unify designs to largely mimic the set from NTT Docomo,&nbsp;providing&nbsp;greater cross-platform consistency. This was the first and only emoji set from au to move away from <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-3/">realistic designs</a> to more abstract symbols.

Shigetaka Kurita, the creator of the first Docomo designs, is <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2013/3/4/3966140/how-emoji-conquered-the-world">reported to have assisted with this effort</a>.

Type F

A higher resolution version of au&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="/au-kddi/type-d-1/">Type D-2</a>&nbsp;emoji set, but without animation. This emoji set was the last revision from au which featured designs unique to the company. Available as early as 2003, this set was in common use from 2005&mdash;2012 on au devices.

The <a href="/au-kddi/type-f/">following release</a> unified designs to more closely match those from NTT Docomo.

Note: Each&nbsp;emoji has been mapped to its modern Unicode codepoint, despite this set existing prior to Unicode emoji standardization.

Type D-3

A higher resolution version of au&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="/au-kddi/type-d-1/">Type D-1</a>&nbsp;emoji set available on higher end devices at the time. Replaced by <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-3/">Type D-3</a>, which uses the same designs but without animation, and at a higher resolution.

Type D-2

A complete redesign which followed <a href="/au-kddi/type-c-2/">Type C-2</a> from au. Animated, relatively low resolution pixel art. <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-2/">Type D-2</a>&nbsp;features the same range and designs, at a higher resolution. First available from August 2001, but in common use in 2003. Used on older devices than the Type D-2 set.

Some changes from the previous release <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20031010032355/http://au.kddi.com:80/email/au_dakara/emoji/">were noted on the KDDI website</a>.

Type D-1

A color revision of the previous <a href="/au-kddi/type-a-2/">Type A-2 emoji set</a> from au. Many characters retained their design in this colorization, while other designs were also updated.

Available from August 2000, this set is closely related to the <a href="/au-kddi/type-b-3/">Type B-3</a> set available in a similar timeframe.
