First available in May 2012, this emoji set is the first from au by KDDI to unify designs to largely mimic the set from NTT Docomo,&nbsp;providing&nbsp;greater cross-platform consistency. This was the first and only emoji set from au to move away from <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-3/">realistic designs</a> to more abstract symbols.

Shigetaka Kurita, the creator of the first Docomo designs, is <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2013/3/4/3966140/how-emoji-conquered-the-world">reported to have assisted with this effort</a>.

Type F

A higher resolution version of au&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="/au-kddi/type-d-1/">Type D-2</a>&nbsp;emoji set, but without animation. This emoji set was the last revision from au which featured designs unique to the company. Available as early as 2003, this set was in common use from 2005&mdash;2012 on au devices.

The <a href="/au-kddi/type-f/">following release</a> unified designs to more closely match those from NTT Docomo.

Type D-3

A higher resolution version of au&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="/au-kddi/type-d-1/">Type D-1</a>&nbsp;emoji set available on higher end devices at the time. Replaced by <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-3/">Type D-3</a>, which uses the same designs but without animation, and at a higher resolution.

Type D-2

A complete redesign which followed <a href="/au-kddi/type-c-2/">Type C-2</a> from au. Animated, relatively low resolution pixel art. <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-2/">Type D-2</a>&nbsp;features the same range and designs, at a higher resolution. First available from August 2001, but in common use in 2003. Used on older devices than the Type D-2 set.

Some changes from the previous release <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20031010032355/http://au.kddi.com:80/email/au_dakara/emoji/">were noted on the KDDI website</a>.

Type D-1

Type C-2 redesigned all emojis from <a href="/au-kddi/type-b-3/">Type B-3</a> and expanded the number of smileys available from one to seven. The new designs in this released used&nbsp;more vibrant colors, and this is the first set from au to include <a href="/au-kddi/type-c-2/pile-of-poo/">💩&nbsp;Pile of Poo</a> which had been <a href="/softbank/1997/pile-of-poo/">available</a> on some SoftBank (n&eacute;e J-Phone)&nbsp;as early as 1997.

Created in 2000, but potentially not in widespread use until&nbsp;2002. Replaced by <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-1/">Type D-1</a> in 2003.

Type C-2

A friendly, cartoon-styled face of a monkey, looking straight ahead. Depicted as a brown-haired monkey with a tan or pinkish face, round ears, nostrils, and open-mouthed grin.

As with the full-bodied <a href="/monkey/">🐒 Monkey</a>, often used with a playful tone or for metaphorical senses of monkey.

One of the 12 animals of the <a href="/chinese-new-year/">Chinese zodiac</a>. Available as an Apple <a href="/animoji/">Animoji</a>.

Vendors implement the same&nbsp;or similar monkey face in their Three Wise Monkeys emojis: <a href="/see-no-evil-monkey/">🙈 See-No-Evil Monkey</a>, <a href="/hear-no-evil-monkey/">🙉 Hear-No-Evil Monkey</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="/speak-no-evil-monkey/">🙊 Speak-No-Evil Monkey</a>.

Facebook&rsquo;s monkey <a href="/facebook/1.0/monkey-face/">previously</a> resembled <a href="/bear/">🐻 Bear Face</a>.

This emoji is considered <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/how-the-monkey-emoji-is-racist/">racist in some contexts</a>, particularly when used to disparage, insult, and abuse people with dark skin, especially Black people. &nbsp;

Monkey Face

A color revision of the previous <a href="/au-kddi/type-a-2/">Type A-2 emoji set</a> from au. Many characters retained their design in this colorization, while other designs were also updated.

Available from August 2000, this set is closely related to the <a href="/au-kddi/type-b-3/">Type B-3</a> set available in a similar timeframe.
