Thanks to the alembic&rsquo;s association with alchemy, this emoji may also convey a sense of magic. And, thanks to its resemblance to a glass pipe, some use the emoji&nbsp;to represent&nbsp;a bong or other drug paraphernalia.

Commonly used for various content concerning magic, alternative spirituality, and (predicting) the future. May also be used for its shape or color more generally.

Prescription glasses, shown with a variety of frames, depending on platform.

Eyeglasses

A&nbsp;microscope, as used in science laboratories to magnify small objects, such as <a href="/microbe/">cells</a> or <a href="/bug/">insects</a>. Depicted as a compound opitical microscope with an adjustable eyepiece, lens, arm, and slide&nbsp;stage mounted on a base. Generally shown as metal with the viewing apparatus facing left.

Commonly used for various content concerning science and research. May also be used for various senses of inspection (e.g., taking a closer took).

Google&rsquo;s design was <a href="/google/android-11.0/microscope/">previously</a> shown in red.

Microscope

A single, light blue droplet, as of water, sweat, or tears.

May be used for various types of liquid. May also be used to expression sadness, as in <a href="/crying-face/">😢 Crying Face</a>,&nbsp;or for various liquid-based slang expressions (e.g., drip, &ldquo;exceptional style, swagger&quot;).

Not to be confused with <a href="/sweat-droplets/">💦 Sweat Droplets</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Droplet

The distinctive, star-shaped&nbsp;leaf of the maple tree. Depicted as a reddish-orange maple leaf, as has changed color in the fall/autumn, with five pointed segments.

Used as an emblem of Canada, featured on the&nbsp;<a href="/flag-canada/">🇨🇦 Flag of Canada</a>. Also used to represent trees and the season of&nbsp;<a href="/fall-autumn/">fall/autumn</a>&nbsp;more generally.

Microsoft&#39;s leaf was <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/maple-leaf/">previously</a> yellow.

Maple Leaf

A smiling yellow face with glasses, often with teeth showing, originally buck teeth on most platforms.

While this emoji is often used by people calling themselves nerds in a self-deprecating way, the nerdy glasses paired with buck teeth can, and often does, evoke anti-Asian stereotypes. The fact that the default color of emoji faces is yellow further pushes this emoji into racist &quot;<a href="https://hyperallergic.com/189200/asians-meet-new-yellow-emoji-with-frowny-face/">yellowface</a>&quot;&nbsp;territory.

Some platforms have redesigned nerd face&nbsp;over time to not have buck teeth, perhaps in acknowledgement of the harm this imagery&nbsp;may cause. Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, and JoyPixels <a href="/google/android-7.0/nerd-face/">originally</a> <a href="/facebook/2.0/nerd-face/">featured</a> <a href="/joypixels/4.0/nerd-face/">designs</a> with buck teeth but have since changed (or completely removed) the teeth on nerd face.

Apple, Twitter, Microsoft, Samsung, and other platforms still use designs for this emoji that include buck teeth.

Nerd Face

A test tube, as used to conduct chemical experiments in a laboratory. Depicted as a clear cylinder, open at one end and containing a green liquid. Positioned at a 45&deg; angle.

May be used for various content concerning chemistry and science more generally. May also represent other liquids, such as potions or medicines, as well metaphorical laboratories and experiments.

Some platforms include volume markings or display the liquid as bubbling.&nbsp;WhatsApp&rsquo;s design features a blue liquid.

Test Tube

A petri dish, as used to culture <a href="/microbe/">microbes</a>. Depicted as a clear, shallow cylinder with a red, blue, or green growth medium, such as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agar">agar</a>, with splotches of variously colored cells, like bacteria.

May be used for various content concerning biology and science more generally. May also be used to represent germs and other microorganisms.

Samsung&rsquo;s design features&nbsp;a lid, while&nbsp;Google&rsquo;s design <a href="/google/android-11.0/petri-dish/">previously</a> featured a dropper.

Tumbler Glass

A person who wields magical powers derived from supernatural or occult sources.

Mage

A medical syringe, as used to administer a vaccine&nbsp;or draw <a href="/drop-of-blood/">blood</a>. Generally depicted at a 45&deg; angle with a needle to the upper right.

Commonly used for content concerning health, medicine, and related professions as well as various senses of needles, drugs, tattoos, blood, or more recently&nbsp;&ndash; <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/vaccine-emoji-comes-to-life/">coronavirus vaccination</a>.

Originally used for the representation of blood donation, and displayed with blood in the barrel. In 2021 many platforms are switching to a more general-purpose empty syringe.&nbsp;<a href="/google/android-7.0/syringe/">Google</a> and <a href="/facebook/1.0/syringe/">Facebook&rsquo;s</a> designs previously featured green liquids.

Syringe

A yellow face with a crumpled mouth and a cockeyed expression, as if <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tired_and_emotional">tired and emotional</a> from inebriation or smitten with love. Depicted with raised or furrowed eyebrows and at least one eye half-open. WhatsApp&#39;s design features a tongue hanging out.&nbsp;

Meaning widely varies, but commonly conveys intoxication or&nbsp;infatuation. Its dazed expression may also represent such feelings or states as bewilderment,&nbsp;irritation, disgust, exhaustion, wackiness, or complete satisfaction.

Face with Uneven Eyes and Wavy Mouth

A classic hourglass, its sand still flowing from the top to bottom bulb. Indicates time is still passing&mdash;but life is short. Color varies across platforms.

Commonly used for various content concerning time. May also be used for hourglass-shaped figures. Not to be confused with <a href="/hourglass-done/">⌛&nbsp;Hourglass Done</a>, whose sand has stopped flowing.

Many platforms indicate text with dark lines. WhatsApp&rsquo;s design includes wooden rollers. Apple&rsquo;s design features an easter egg, script of text from its 1997&ndash;2002 <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Think_Different">Crazy Ones/Think Different</a> ad campaign:

An <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abacus">abacus</a>, an ancient tool used to count and calculate by moving beads. Depicted as a wooden frame with four or more rows or columns of variously positioned and colored beads.

Used for various content concerning mathematics and science (education) as well as calculations,&nbsp;counting, and numbers more generally.

Designs from Apple&nbsp;and Facebook resemble a Chinese abacus (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suanpan">suanpan</a>), as did a <a href="/microsoft/windows-11/abacus/">previous</a> Microsoft design. By one reckoning, Apple&rsquo;s red-beaded&nbsp;design displays the number 108 and Emojipedia&#39;s, 12,031,981.

Abacus

Clear safety goggles. When this emoji was approved in 2018 it was&nbsp;implied to be safety goggles rather than swimming goggles. A year later&nbsp;<a href="/diving-mask/">🤿&nbsp;Diving Mask</a>, which is&nbsp;similar in design&nbsp;but used&nbsp;to represent swimming goggles rather than safety goggles,&nbsp;was approved.

Goggles

A classic hourglass, all of its sand having flowed into the bottom bulb. Indicates time has passed. Color varies across platforms.

Commonly used for various content concerning time. May also be used for hourglass-shaped figures. Not to be confused with <a href="/hourglass-not-done/">⏳&nbsp;Hourglass Not Done</a>, whose sand is still flowing.

Hourglass

Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/pill/">previously featured</a> a blue-and-white capsule with two round pills, one orange, the other white. <a href="/google/android-6.0.1/pill/">Google</a> and <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/pill/">Microsoft&rsquo;s</a> designs previously featured blue in their capsules.

Pill

A microbe, as a bacterium grown in a <a href="/petri-dish/">🧫 Petri Dish</a> or observed under a <a href="/microscope/">🔬 Microscope</a>. Generally depicted as a squiggly, single-celled microorganism with prominent <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cilium">cilia</a>. Color, shape, and position vary across platforms.&nbsp;Commonly used to represent bacteria, viruses, and germs and disease more generally.

In 2020, this emoji became <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/spread-of-the-coronavirus-emoji/">primarily used</a> in reference to <a href="/coronavirus/">Coronavirus / COVID-19</a>.

Apple&#39;s version of this emoji most closely represents a virus, while others from&nbsp;Samsung, Microsoft and&nbsp;Twitter&nbsp;appear as bright green bacteria. Other versions of this emoji also appear mainly as bacteria:&nbsp;Facebook&#39;s is&nbsp;indigo, and WhatsApp&rsquo;s purple. Google&rsquo;s design <a href="/google/android-9.0/microbe/">previously displayed</a> five microbes in&nbsp;different, bright colors.

Prior to 2016 all LG devices carried LG&rsquo;s own emoji designs. However, LG phones sold from 2017 between and early 2021 used the <a href="/google/">stock Android emoji set</a> from Google.

LG Emoji List [Updated: September 2021]

From early 2021, Android 11 began rollout out for LG Velvet devices in select regions.

Alongside Android 11 came the first update LG&#39;s emoji set <a href="/lg/g5/">since early 2016</a>, which reintroduced the vendor&rsquo;s own emoji set to eligible devices. From 2017 until this update, LG devices used the <a href="/google/">stock Android emoji set</a> from Google.

This update introduced emojis from 2016&#39;s <a href="/people/">Emoji 3.0</a>&nbsp;up to 2019&rsquo;s <a href="/emoji-12.0/">Emoji 12.0</a> to the LG emoji set. It also revised many emoji designs within the <a href="/people/">😃 Smileys &amp; People</a> category.
