Mate is a caffeinated beverage popular in many South American countries. Green in color (from a key ingredient: the dried leaves of yerba mate) and consumed via a metal straw.

This drink is commonly referred to as yerba mate in English, and sometimes spelled maté (to distinguish from a mate, as in friend).

Mate was approved as part of Unicode 12.0 in 2019 under the name “Mate Drink” and added to Emoji 12.0 in 2019.
