Unicode 1.1 were pre-dated emoji inclusion in Unicode by 17 years, and included many characters primarily sourced from the Zapf Dingbats font.

The following characters were added to Unicode in 1993 and many were given emoji presentation status in the years 2010-2015.

An emoji set from au by KDDI; a Japanese mobile phone carrier. Using black and white emoji&nbsp;characters&nbsp;<a href="/nl/au-kddi/type-a-2/">from 1999</a>, this set <a href="/nl/au-kddi/type-d-1/">gained animation in the early 2000s</a>&nbsp;before moving to static, <a href="/nl/au-kddi/type-d-3/">high resolution designs</a>.

In 2012, au&nbsp;replaced its custom designs with <a href="/nl/au-kddi/type-f/">a new set</a> heavily inspired by, and designed to be compatible with, emojis from NTT Docomo.

Note: Each&nbsp;emoji design within every pre-2010 emoji set has been mapped to its modern Unicode codepoint, despite these sets existing prior to Unicode emoji standardization.

First available in May 2012, this emoji set is the first from au by KDDI to unify designs to largely mimic the set from NTT Docomo,&nbsp;providing&nbsp;greater cross-platform consistency. This was the first and only emoji set from au to move away from <a href="/nl/au-kddi/type-d-3/">realistic designs</a> to more abstract symbols.

Shigetaka Kurita, the creator of the first Docomo designs, is <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2013/3/4/3966140/how-emoji-conquered-the-world">reported to have assisted with this effort</a>.

Type F

A higher resolution version of au&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="/nl/au-kddi/type-d-1/">Type D-2</a>&nbsp;emoji set, but without animation. This emoji set was the last revision from au which featured designs unique to the company. Available as early as 2003, this set was in common use from 2005&mdash;2012 on au devices.

The <a href="/nl/au-kddi/type-f/">following release</a> unified designs to more closely match those from NTT Docomo.
