Pill

A yellow face wearing a white surgical mask, as used by <a href="/health-worker/">health workers</a> in <a href="/hospital/">hospitals</a>&nbsp;as well as the general public during a <a href="/coronavirus/">pandemic</a>. May be worn&nbsp;to avoid <a href="/face-with-thermometer/">sickness</a> or spreading airborne diseases.

Displayed with closed eyes on most platforms. Google,&nbsp;and WhatsApp show&nbsp;this emoji with neutral eyes.&nbsp;Apple changed this emoji to show with smiling eyes&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/mask-wearing-emoji-now-smiles/">in iOS 14.2 and above</a>, as did Microsoft in their <a href="/microsoft/windows-11-november-2021-update/">Windows 11 November 2021</a> update.

In 2020, this emoji became <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/spread-of-the-coronavirus-emoji/">primarily used</a> in reference to <a href="/coronavirus/">Coronavirus / COVID-19</a>.

Face with Medical Mask

A yellow face with raised or furrowed eyebrows and a <a href="/thermometer/">thermometer</a> in its mouth. Often depicted with red cheeks, as if feverish. May be used to represent a <a href="/hospital/">hospital</a> patient or person with a cold or flu.

Differs from other smileys conveying illness, such as <a href="/nauseated-face/">🤢 Nauseated Face</a> (appearing as if it&#39;s&nbsp;going to vomit) or <a href="/face-with-head-bandage/">🤕 Face With Head-Bandage</a> (physical injury).

Can also be used figuratively to express finding something &#39;hot&#39;, i.e. attractive or arousing.

Face with Thermometer

A yellow face with a half-frown and white bandage wrapped around its head, often depicted partially over one eye. May represent physical injury or pain but also emotional hurting, sometimes for ironic effect.

Differs from other smileys conveying illness, such as <a href="/nauseated-face/">🤢 Nauseated Face</a> (appearing as if it&rsquo;s going to vomit) or <a href="/face-with-thermometer/">🤒 Face With Thermometer</a> (used especially for colds and flus).

Huawei&#39;s design for this emoji has a heavily bruised eye as well as a head bandage.

Woman Health Worker

A place where people are taken to receive medical care. This hospital has a large red cross on the front, often used as a symbol for health care.

Hospital

A liquid-in-glass thermometer, as used to measure temperature. Depicted at various angles with a red liquid risen from the bulb to various levels on the scale. Commonly used for content&nbsp;concerning high temperatures, including <a href="/sun/">warm weather</a>, illness (<a href="/face-with-thermometer/">having a fever</a>), and various slang senses of hot.

Thermometer

An apparatus for distilling, as used in medieval <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alchemy">alchemy</a>. Generally depicted as a round flask with a neck angled down to the right. Positioned on a short stand and containing a mysterious green, purple, or blue liquid.

Commonly used for various content concerning chemistry and science more generally. May represent various liquids, such as potions or&nbsp;medicines, as well as metaphorical laboratories and experiments.

Thanks to the alembic&rsquo;s association with alchemy, this emoji may also convey a sense of magic. And, thanks to its resemblance to a glass pipe, some use the emoji&nbsp;to represent&nbsp;a bong or other drug paraphernalia.

Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/alembic/">previously featured</a>&nbsp;a copper still, as used for making <a href="/tumbler-glass/">whiskey</a>.

Alembic

A medical syringe, as used to administer a vaccine&nbsp;or draw <a href="/drop-of-blood/">blood</a>. Generally depicted at a 45&deg; angle with a needle to the upper right.

Commonly used for content concerning health, medicine, and related professions as well as various senses of needles, drugs, tattoos, blood, or more recently&nbsp;&ndash; <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/vaccine-emoji-comes-to-life/">coronavirus vaccination</a>.

Originally used for the representation of blood donation, and displayed with blood in the barrel. In 2021 many platforms are switching to a more general-purpose empty syringe.&nbsp;<a href="/google/android-7.0/syringe/">Google</a> and <a href="/facebook/1.0/syringe/">Facebook&rsquo;s</a> designs previously featured green liquids.

A red drop of blood.&nbsp;May be used to talk about bleeding, injury,&nbsp;blood donation, or&nbsp;menstruation.

Smoking Symbol

A symbol displaying&nbsp;of a rod with a <a href="/snake/" title="🐍 Snake">snake</a> entwined around the outside in a downward-spiral shape.

Associated with medicine and health care services such as doctors or hospitals. A similar and related symbol called the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caduceus_as_a_symbol_of_medicine">Caduceus</a> is frequently used in the <a href="/flag-united-states/" title="🇺🇸 Flag for United States">United States</a>.

Note that Samsung users may see select emojis display as their <a href="/google/">Google</a>&nbsp;set design. This is due to <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/faster-emoji-updates-on-the-way-for-android-apps/">Android AppCompat</a>, which will display a Google emoji design within an app or web platform&nbsp;when a Samsung device has not yet been updated to support that particular emoji.

Since the introduction of Samsung&#39;s emoji set in <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-2.0">2014</a>, various Unicode characters that have not been recommended to have emoji presentation have nevertheless been given a colorful emoji design on Samsung platforms.
