School

A school bag Emoji (also called a satchel) used by children attending school to carry books, lunch, and other personal belongings.

School Satchel

Two or more silver <a href="/paperclip/">paper clips</a> linked together, generally forming an inverted V.&nbsp;Microsoft&rsquo;s design displays three paper clips.

Occasionally used to represent school/office supplies or metaphorical connections. Also sometimes used as an icon before a <a href="/link/">hyperlink</a>.

Straight Ruler

Pencil

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palette_(painting)">palette</a> used by an artist when painting, to store and mix paint colors.

Artist Palette

A claw hammer, as used for driving or removing nails. Generally depicted with a metal head and wooden&nbsp;handle, positioned at a 45&deg; angle with the head at the upper left.

Commonly used for content concerning tools, building, and construction as well as various senses of breaking or smashing. May also represent hard work or be applied to hammer-related expressions, e.g., nailed it.

Commonly used for various content concerning tools, equipment, and technology. May also represent file compression in computer science. An image of a clamp, for example,&nbsp;is featured in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinZip">WinZip</a> icon.

Twitter&rsquo;s clamp is red.&nbsp;Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/clamp/">previously featured</a> a clamp around a cardboard box.

Compression

A spiral-bound, flip-style notepad or notebook of lined paper, as used for everyday note-taking. Commonly used for content concerning various types of documents and writing.

Most platforms depict a notepad opened to an empty, white page, sometimes shown curled at the bottom. Microsoft&rsquo;s design is shown closed, with a yellow cover.

Man Artist

A construction worker wearing a hard-hat (safety helmet). Has a high visibility vest or <a href="/hammer/" title="🔨 Hammer">hammer</a> in some variations.

Some platforms display a green cross on the <a href="/rescue-workers-helmet/" title="⛑ Helmet With White Cross">helmet</a> which is used in Japan as a safety reminder in <a href="/construction/" title="🚧 Construction Sign">construction</a> zones. It is also commonly seen on the <a href="http://megaman.wikia.com/wiki/Met">Met</a>&nbsp;helmet in the game&nbsp;Mega Man.

Apple and Microsoft&rsquo;s designs feature a red and white sawtooth pattern, Facebook and WhatsApp&rsquo;s blue and white checkers.
