Spouting Whale

A whale, the massive marine mammal. Generally depicted as a light-blue whale in full profile facing left, with its tail curving down towards is huge mouth. Shown with a white, textured underside, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humpback_whale">humpback</a> or&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_whale">blue whale</a>.

Not to be confused with the more cartoon-styled <a href="/spouting-whale/">🐳 Spouting Whale</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Apple and Google&#39;s whales have slightly open mouths, revealing <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baleen">baleen</a>.

Whale

A penguin, a flightless bird adapted to water and ice. Variously depicted as a full, black-bodied penguin with a white belly and orange bill or as a penguin head.

Often used with an affectionate or playful tone or in association with the cold. Occasionally used to represent a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puffin">puffin</a>.

Apple and WhatsApp&rsquo;s designs feature a penguin head, with Apple&rsquo;s bearing a yellow patch on its head, as an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor_penguin">emperor penguin</a>. Other major platforms feature a penguin standing in full profile, facing forward or left.

Penguin

The unique, feathery ice crystal of a snowflake. Depicted as a bluish-white snowflake with six&nbsp;intricate&nbsp;symmetrical branches.

Like <a href="/cloud-with-snow/">🌨️ Cloud With Snow</a>, may be used as a weather icon to represent a snowstorm or a cold, snowy day. Sometimes used as an insult to call a person&nbsp;weak and&nbsp;oversensitive.

Snowflake

A wave of water, as breaks at the beach. Depicted as a blue wave with a foamy, white crest, curling to the right.

May be used to represent water in general, various bodies of water like oceans, and water activities, such as&nbsp;<a href="/person-swimming/">swimming</a>, <a href="/person-surfing/">surfing</a>, and <a href="/sailboat/">sailing</a>. May also&nbsp;be used to represent metaphorical waves.

Apple&rsquo;s design resembles the iconic wave in&nbsp;Japanese artist Hokusai&rsquo;s famous woodblock print, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Wave_off_Kanagawa">The Great Wave off Kanagawa</a>&nbsp;(ca. 1830).

Water Wave

A blowfish (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetraodontidae">puffer</a>), which puffs up and becomes spiky when alarmed. Depicted as an orange or brown blowfish in full profile facing left, with small fins, a white underside, and a round, spiky body, as if inflated.

Called <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fugu">fugu</a> in Japan, where it&rsquo;s consumed as a delicacy.

A tropical fish, as swims in the warm waters of a coral reef or is kept as a pet in an aquarium. Depicted as a brightly colored fish in full profile facing left, with slender fins. Unicode 13.0 is the version of the Unicode Standard&nbsp;released on&nbsp;March 10, 2020. 55 new emoji&nbsp;code points were added in this release,&nbsp;with all 117 new emojis for 2020 (including sequences for gender and skin tone)&nbsp;listed under <a href="/emoji-13.0/">Emoji 13.0</a>.

Samsung devices use <a href="https://news.samsung.com/global/samsungs-emoji-suite-makes-for-a-more-emotional-digital-world">their own emoji designs</a>&nbsp;which are different to those used on other <a href="/google/">Android devices</a>. These&nbsp;glossy emojis&nbsp;appear on devices such as the Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note series and are updated as part of the Samsung One UI interface layer (previously Samsung Experience, before that Samsung TouchWiz)&nbsp;which runs on top of Android.

Note that Samsung users may see select emojis display as their <a href="/google/">Google</a>&nbsp;set design. This is due to <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/faster-emoji-updates-on-the-way-for-android-apps/">Android AppCompat</a>, which will display a Google emoji design within an app or web platform&nbsp;when a Samsung device has not yet been updated to support that particular emoji.

Since the introduction of Samsung&#39;s emoji set in <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-2.0">2014</a>, various Unicode characters that have not been recommended to have emoji presentation have nevertheless been given a colorful emoji design on Samsung platforms. Samsung Emoji List — Emojis for Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note [Updated 2023]

Beginning its rollout for select Samsung devices on 28 March 2024, Samsung&#39;s One UI 6.1 redesigns most emojis within the&nbsp;<a href="/travel-places">🚀 Travel &amp; Places</a> and&nbsp;<a href="/objects">💡 Objects</a> categories while also revising the outline and shading of hundreds of additional emojis&#39; designs.

One UI 6.1

Beginning its rollout for select Samsung devices on 30&nbsp;October 2023, Samsung&#39;s One UI 6.0&nbsp;featured a completely new design style for the majority of the vendor&#39;s emojis.

All smiley, food, and animal emoji designs have been revised in this update, as have the majority of the people emojis.

This is the most significant revision of the vendor&#39;s emoji set since&nbsp;February 2018&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="https://emojipedia.org/samsung/experience-9.0">Experience 9.0</a> update, which introduced a significant number of design revisions that were consistent with those used on other platforms.

This update also introduced support for the 2023 <a href="https://emojipedia.org/emoji-15.1">Emoji 15.1</a> recommendation list.

One UI 6.0

Beginning its rollout for select Samsung devices from October 2022, Samsung&#39;s One UI 5.0 provided support for both&nbsp;2021&#39;s <a href="/emoji-14.0/">Emoji 14.0</a> and 2022&#39;s <a href="https://emojipedia.org/emoji-15.0/">Emoji 15.0</a>&nbsp;recommendations.

Prior to the release of One UI 5.0, many Samsung users may have seen support for <a href="/emoji-14.0/">Emoji 14.0</a>&nbsp;emojis provided via <a href="/google/">Google&#39;s emoji design set</a>. This was due to Google&#39;s expansion of&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/faster-emoji-updates-on-the-way-for-android-apps/">Android AppCompat</a>&nbsp;in 2021.

A select number of users also reported seeing <a href="/emoji-14.0/">Emoji 14.0</a>&nbsp;designs in Samsung&#39;s emoji font when updating to One UI 4.1.1 in September 2022.

One UI 5.0

Beginning its rollout for select Samsung devices from&nbsp;mid-January 2022, this small emoji updated changed the design of Samsung&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="/sparkles/">✨ Sparkles</a> emoji to be more consistent&nbsp;with those of other emoji vendors.

Additional devices received this emoji update alongside Samsung&#39;s&nbsp;One UI 4.1 update, which was made widely available in March 2022 after initially debuting with the Galaxy S22 series of devices a month earlier.

Beginning its rollout on&nbsp;2021-11-15 for Samsung&#39;s Galaxy S21 series of mobile devices,&nbsp;Samsung One UI 4.0&nbsp;added support for <a href="/emoji-13.1/">Emoji 13.1</a>.

Beginning its rollout in late July 2021 to select Samsung&rsquo;s Galaxy Z devices, One UI 3.1.1 updated a small number of existing emoji designs.

Select devices running Samsung One UI 3.1 were also given this emoji update&nbsp;via a firmware update in August 2021.

Released alongside the Galaxy Note 20 on&nbsp;2020-08-21, Samsung One UI 2.5 added support for <a href="/emoji-13.0/">Emoji 13.0</a>. TouchWiz 5.1 launched on the&nbsp;Samsung Galaxy S5 running&nbsp;Android 4.4.2.

The TouchWiz 5.1&nbsp;emojis are generally the same as those provided on the Galaxy S4 (TouchWiz Nature UX 2), with only a few <a href="/camera-with-flash/">additions</a> and <a href="/woman-dancing/">modifications</a>.
