Roasted Sweet Potato

A plump, red garden tomato topped with a leafy green stem. May resemble the&nbsp;<a href="/red-apple/" title="🍎 Red Apple">red apple</a>&nbsp;at&nbsp;small sizes.

Tomato

A whole potato&mdash;such as a russet, used for baking, mashing, or frying&mdash;shown with a few eyes on its golden-brown skin. Not to be confused with the&nbsp;<a href="/roasted-sweet-potato/" title="🍠 Roasted Sweet Potato">roasted sweet potato</a>.

Potato

A long, bulbous, bright purple eggplant, or aubergine in British English, shown with a leafy stem. Considered lucky in Japan to dream of an eggplant the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatsuyume">first night of the New Year</a>.&nbsp;

Widely used to represent a penis. Due to its phallic use, the hashtag&nbsp;<a href="https://instagram.com/explore/tags/🍆/" title="Browse #🍆 on Instagram">#🍆</a>&nbsp;was&nbsp;once&nbsp;banned (2015) on Instagram&#39;s search function.

Aubergine

An ear of corn, or maize, partially husked to show its buttery-yellow kernels.

Ear of Maize

A long, green cucumber with bumpy skin. Resembles its derived product, a pickle or gherkin, on many platforms, except on Apple and WhatsApp, which depict it with light-green, seed-y slices.

Cucumber

A knife with a long steel blade, as a <a href="/woman-cook/">chef</a> uses to slice <a href="/cut-of-meat/">meat</a> or vegetables. Depicted with a black or brown handle and positioned at a 45&deg; angle, often with its point at the lower right.

May be used for content concerning cooking and food preparation, but often represents various senses of cutting and stabbing.&nbsp;Its Unicode name, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_kitchen_knife">Hocho</a>, means &ldquo;kitchen knife&rdquo; in Japanese and refers to a variety of knives used in <a href="/flag-japan/">Japan</a>.

Not to be confused with <a href="/dagger/">🗡️&nbsp;Dagger</a> or <a href="/crossed-swords/">⚔️&nbsp;Crossed Swords</a>.

Hocho

A kiwifruit, or Chinese gooseberry, with its fuzzy, brown skin sliced open to show its light-green flesh, white core, and black seeds.&nbsp;

May be associated with&nbsp;<a href="/flag-new-zealand/">New Zealand</a>, whose residents are nicknamed Kiwis, after the bird.

Kiwifruit

An orange-colored citrus fruit with a green leaf or leaves and stem. Officially depicting a tangerine, a type of mandarin (mikan&nbsp;in Japan). Often used as a garden-variety orange. Either way, a good source of vitamin C.

Tangerine

A friendly, cartoon-styled face of a rabbit, looking straight ahead. Generally depicted as a gray and/or white rabbit face with upright ears and pink ears and nose, often with whiskers and a buck tooth.

Often used with a more affectionate tone than the full-bodied <a href="/rabbit/">🐇 rabbit</a>. Also often used to represent the <a href="/easter/">Easter Bunny</a>.

Available as an Apple <a href="/animoji/">Animoji</a>.

Microsoft&rsquo;s rabbit face was <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/rabbit-face/">previously</a> pink-colored&nbsp;with one ear flopping down. Facebook&rsquo;s rabbit face was <a href="/facebook/1.0/rabbit-face/">previously</a> gray-colored&nbsp;with both ears flopping down.

Rabbit Face

A rabbit, a hoppy mammal with long ears. Depicted as a white, gray, or brown rabbit in full profile facing left with pink ears and a short tail, sitting on its long, hind legs or on all fours.

May be used in association with <a href="/spring/">spring</a>, <a href="/easter/">Easter</a>, magic, <a href="/people-with-bunny-ears/">bunny ears</a>, or various rabbit-based characters or expressions (e.g., going down the rabbit hole).

Cooked Rice

May represent&nbsp;kare-raisu, or&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_curry">Japanese curry</a>, though commonly associated with&nbsp;<a href="/flag-india/">India</a>&nbsp;and other Asian cuisines.

A head of a rich green leaf vegetable, usually shown with white stalks. May be used to represent a variety&nbsp;of greens, including romaine lettuce, chard, and&nbsp;<a href="/flag-china/">Chinese</a> cabbage like&nbsp;bok choy, as commonly cooked in Asian cuisines.&nbsp;

Leafy Green

A classic snowman, as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frosty_the_Snowman">Frosty the Snowman</a>, with <a href="/snowflake/">snowflakes</a> falling on it.&nbsp;Depicted as a snowman, facing forward, made from two or three large snowballs and stick arms, dressed with a <a href="/top-hat/">top hat</a>, a <a href="/carrot/">carrot</a> nose, coal eyes, and two or three buttons on its torso. Often used for various content concerning <a href="/winter/" title="⛄ Winter">winter</a> fun and <a href="/christmas/">Christmastime</a>.

Vendors implement the same figure for their <a href="/snowman-without-snow/" title=" ⛄ Snowman Without Snow">⛄ Snowman Without Snow</a>, which does not have snowflakes.

Google&rsquo;s snowman previously&nbsp;wore&nbsp;green <a href="/gloves/">gloves</a>, while&nbsp;<a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/snowman/">Samsung&#39;s</a>&nbsp;design previously lacked a hat.

This snowman predates Unicode emoji support, which explains why it may display as the&nbsp;black-and-white <a href="/glossary/#white">outline</a> of a snowman.

The Unicode Consortium accepted the following emoji 72 emojis&nbsp;for Unicode 9.0. This update&nbsp;was released&nbsp;on June 21, 2016. Most vendors added support for this update within the 2016 calendar year.&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/unicode-9-0-released-with-72-new-emojis/">Sample images and more about Unicode 9.0</a>.

<a href="/emoji-4.0/">Emoji 4.0</a> was published in late 2016, which added additional emoji professions.

<h2>New in Unicode 9</h2>

Samsung devices use <a href="https://news.samsung.com/global/samsungs-emoji-suite-makes-for-a-more-emotional-digital-world">their own emoji designs</a>&nbsp;which are different to those used on other <a href="/google/">Android devices</a>. These&nbsp;glossy emojis&nbsp;appear on devices such as the Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note series and are updated as part of the Samsung One UI interface layer (previously Samsung Experience, before that Samsung TouchWiz)&nbsp;which runs on top of Android.

Note that Samsung users may see select emojis display as their <a href="/google/">Google</a>&nbsp;set design. This is due to <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/faster-emoji-updates-on-the-way-for-android-apps/">Android AppCompat</a>, which will display a Google emoji design within an app or web platform&nbsp;when a Samsung device has not yet been updated to support that particular emoji.

Since the introduction of Samsung&#39;s emoji set in <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-2.0">2014</a>, various Unicode characters that have not been recommended to have emoji presentation have nevertheless been given a colorful emoji design on Samsung platforms.
