May be used to represent various insects, worms, and related animals. May also be used for&nbsp;metaphorical senses of bug.

Twitter&rsquo;s bug is purple. Apple&rsquo;s bug is hairy with a red head and legs and black stripes on its body. Facebook&rsquo;s&nbsp;bug also has a yellowish-orange head. <a href="/google/android-7.0/bug/">Google</a> and <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/bug/">Microsoft&rsquo;s</a> bugs previously resembled an orange centipede or millipede, and <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/bug/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> had a cartoon-styled face with a purple nose.

DNA Double Helix

An <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abacus">abacus</a>, an ancient tool used to count and calculate by moving beads. Depicted as a wooden frame with four or more rows or columns of variously positioned and colored beads.

Used for various content concerning mathematics and science (education) as well as calculations,&nbsp;counting, and numbers more generally.

Designs from Apple&nbsp;and Facebook resemble a Chinese abacus (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suanpan">suanpan</a>), as did a <a href="/microsoft/windows-11/abacus/">previous</a> Microsoft design. By one reckoning, Apple&rsquo;s red-beaded&nbsp;design displays the number 108 and Emojipedia&#39;s, 12,031,981.

Abacus

Clear safety goggles. When this emoji was approved in 2018 it was&nbsp;implied to be safety goggles rather than swimming goggles. A year later&nbsp;<a href="/diving-mask/">🤿&nbsp;Diving Mask</a>, which is&nbsp;similar in design&nbsp;but used&nbsp;to represent swimming goggles rather than safety goggles,&nbsp;was approved.

Goggles

A&nbsp;microscope, as used in science laboratories to magnify small objects, such as <a href="/microbe/">cells</a> or <a href="/bug/">insects</a>. Depicted as a compound opitical microscope with an adjustable eyepiece, lens, arm, and slide&nbsp;stage mounted on a base. Generally shown as metal with the viewing apparatus facing left.

Commonly used for various content concerning science and research. May also be used for various senses of inspection (e.g., taking a closer took).

Google&rsquo;s design was <a href="/google/android-11.0/microscope/">previously</a> shown in red.

Microscope

A mosquito, a type of bloodsucking fly. Depicted as a brown or black mosquito on its six, long legs, with wings, long abdomen, and needle-like mouth. Variously shown from above or facing left.

May be used to represent various insects, other <a href="/bug/">bugs</a> and bug bites, and insect-borne diseases (e.g., <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/malaria/index.html">malaria</a>). May also be used for metaphorical pests.

Facebook&rsquo;s mosquito&nbsp;has a red abdomen, as if filled with <a href="/drop-of-blood/">blood</a>.

An apparatus for distilling, as used in medieval <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alchemy">alchemy</a>. Generally depicted as a round flask with a neck angled down to the right. Positioned on a short stand and containing a mysterious green, purple, or blue liquid.

Commonly used for various content concerning chemistry and science more generally. May represent various liquids, such as potions or&nbsp;medicines, as well as metaphorical laboratories and experiments.

Thanks to the alembic&rsquo;s association with alchemy, this emoji may also convey a sense of magic. And, thanks to its resemblance to a glass pipe, some use the emoji&nbsp;to represent&nbsp;a bong or other drug paraphernalia.

Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/alembic/">previously featured</a>&nbsp;a copper still, as used for making <a href="/tumbler-glass/">whiskey</a>.

Alembic

A yellow face wearing a white surgical mask, as used by <a href="/health-worker/">health workers</a> in <a href="/hospital/">hospitals</a>&nbsp;as well as the general public during a <a href="/coronavirus/">pandemic</a>. Displayed with closed eyes on most platforms. Google,&nbsp;and WhatsApp show&nbsp;this emoji with neutral eyes.&nbsp;Apple changed this emoji to show with smiling eyes&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/mask-wearing-emoji-now-smiles/">in iOS 14.2 and above</a>, as did Microsoft in their <a href="/microsoft/windows-11-november-2021-update/">Windows 11 November 2021</a> update.

In 2020, this emoji became <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/spread-of-the-coronavirus-emoji/">primarily used</a> in reference to <a href="/coronavirus/">Coronavirus / COVID-19</a>.

A person who is studying or has expert knowledge of one or more of the natural or physical sciences. Generally depicted wearing safety goggles and a white lab coat while holding a test tube filled with colorful liquid.

Unicode 11.0 was released on June 5,&nbsp;2018.&nbsp;Emojis that require new code points for release are listed on this page&nbsp;but for the full 2018 emoji list&nbsp;see&nbsp;<a href="/emoji-11.0/">Emoji 11.0</a>.

Emoji 11.0 includes every new emoji, including variations for skin tone, gender and new emojis that don&#39;t require additional code points, such as the <a href="/chess-pawn/">chess pawn</a> or <a href="/pirate-flag/">pirate flag</a> which are not shown on this page.

Samsung devices use <a href="https://news.samsung.com/global/samsungs-emoji-suite-makes-for-a-more-emotional-digital-world">their own emoji designs</a>&nbsp;which are different to those used on other <a href="/google/">Android devices</a>. These&nbsp;glossy emojis&nbsp;appear on devices such as the Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note series and are updated as part of the Samsung One UI interface layer (previously Samsung Experience, before that Samsung TouchWiz)&nbsp;which runs on top of Android.

Note that Samsung users may see select emojis display as their <a href="/google/">Google</a>&nbsp;set design. This is due to <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/faster-emoji-updates-on-the-way-for-android-apps/">Android AppCompat</a>, which will display a Google emoji design within an app or web platform&nbsp;when a Samsung device has not yet been updated to support that particular emoji.

Samsung Emoji List — Emojis for Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note [Updated 2023]

Beginning its rollout for select Samsung devices on 28 March 2024, Samsung&#39;s One UI 6.1 redesigns most emojis within the&nbsp;<a href="/travel-places">🚀 Travel &amp; Places</a> and&nbsp;<a href="/objects">💡 Objects</a> categories while also revising the outline and shading of hundreds of additional emojis&#39; designs.

One UI 6.1

Beginning its rollout for select Samsung devices on 30&nbsp;October 2023, Samsung&#39;s One UI 6.0&nbsp;featured a completely new design style for the majority of the vendor&#39;s emojis.

All smiley, food, and animal emoji designs have been revised in this update, as have the majority of the people emojis.

This is the most significant revision of the vendor&#39;s emoji set since&nbsp;February 2018&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="https://emojipedia.org/samsung/experience-9.0">Experience 9.0</a> update, which introduced a significant number of design revisions that were consistent with those used on other platforms.

This update also introduced support for the 2023 <a href="https://emojipedia.org/emoji-15.1">Emoji 15.1</a> recommendation list.

One UI 6.0

Beginning its rollout for select Samsung devices from October 2022, Samsung&#39;s One UI 5.0 provided support for both&nbsp;2021&#39;s <a href="/emoji-14.0/">Emoji 14.0</a> and 2022&#39;s <a href="https://emojipedia.org/emoji-15.0/">Emoji 15.0</a>&nbsp;recommendations.

Prior to the release of One UI 5.0, many Samsung users may have seen support for <a href="/emoji-14.0/">Emoji 14.0</a>&nbsp;emojis provided via <a href="/google/">Google&#39;s emoji design set</a>. This was due to Google&#39;s expansion of&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/faster-emoji-updates-on-the-way-for-android-apps/">Android AppCompat</a>&nbsp;in 2021.

A select number of users also reported seeing <a href="/emoji-14.0/">Emoji 14.0</a>&nbsp;designs in Samsung&#39;s emoji font when updating to One UI 4.1.1 in September 2022.

One UI 5.0

Beginning its rollout for select Samsung devices from&nbsp;mid-January 2022, this small emoji updated changed the design of Samsung&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="/sparkles/">✨ Sparkles</a> emoji to be more consistent&nbsp;with those of other emoji vendors.

Additional devices received this emoji update alongside Samsung&#39;s&nbsp;One UI 4.1 update, which was made widely available in March 2022 after initially debuting with the Galaxy S22 series of devices a month earlier.

One UI 4.0 January 2022

Beginning its rollout on&nbsp;2021-11-15 for Samsung&#39;s Galaxy S21 series of mobile devices,&nbsp;Samsung One UI 4.0&nbsp;added support for <a href="/emoji-13.1/">Emoji 13.1</a>.

Beginning its rollout in late July 2021 to select Samsung&rsquo;s Galaxy Z devices, One UI 3.1.1 updated a small number of existing emoji designs.

Select devices running Samsung One UI 3.1 were also given this emoji update&nbsp;via a firmware update in August 2021.

One UI 3.1.1

Released alongside the Galaxy Note 20 on&nbsp;2020-08-21, Samsung One UI 2.5 added support for <a href="/emoji-13.0/">Emoji 13.0</a>. One UI 2.5

Samsung One UI 2.0&nbsp;began rolling out to users in February 2020.&nbsp;The first major devices to launch with this release were the&nbsp;Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy Z Flip.

This update provides support to the 136 gender-neutral person&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/emoji-zwj-sequences-three-letters-many-possibilities">ZWJ sequences </a>recommended in <a href="/emoji-12.1/">Emoji 12.1</a>. However, the previously-released&nbsp;<a href="/woman/">👩 Woman&nbsp;</a>variant designs are displayed&nbsp;instead of a new gender-neutral design.

The 30 people holding hands emojis recommended&nbsp;in <a href="/emoji-12.1/">Emoji 12.1</a>&nbsp;are absent from this update.
