Appearance varies across platforms, but generally depicted at&nbsp;a 45&deg; angle as a thin, white or red strip with a decorative tie and design, such as flower or <a href="/star/">star</a>.

May be used for various content concerning reading, labeling, or tagging.

WhatsApp&rsquo;s bookmark is purple. Twitter&rsquo;s design shows a red bookmark in a closed book, similar to previous designs from <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/bookmark/">Microsoft</a>. <a href="/twitter/twemoji-1.0/bookmark/">Twitter</a> and <a href="/google/android-7.0/bookmark/">Google&rsquo;s</a> designs previously featured a blue bookmark.

May be used to represent an open book in American Sign Language (ASL), or the gesture used by&nbsp;followers&nbsp;of Islam when&nbsp;praying. This gesture also appears similarly to one used to beg for for money.

Palms Up Together

A smiling yellow face with glasses, often with teeth showing, originally buck teeth on most platforms.

While this emoji is often used by people calling themselves nerds in a self-deprecating way, the nerdy glasses paired with buck teeth can, and often does, evoke anti-Asian stereotypes. The fact that the default color of emoji faces is yellow further pushes this emoji into racist &quot;<a href="https://hyperallergic.com/189200/asians-meet-new-yellow-emoji-with-frowny-face/">yellowface</a>&quot;&nbsp;territory.

Some platforms have redesigned nerd face&nbsp;over time to not have buck teeth, perhaps in acknowledgement of the harm this imagery&nbsp;may cause. Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, and JoyPixels <a href="/google/android-7.0/nerd-face/">originally</a> <a href="/facebook/2.0/nerd-face/">featured</a> <a href="/joypixels/4.0/nerd-face/">designs</a> with buck teeth but have since changed (or completely removed) the teeth on nerd face.

Apple, Twitter, Microsoft, Samsung, and other platforms still use designs for this emoji that include buck teeth.

Nerd Face

A dark-colored, hardcover&nbsp;notebook, as used to write or take notes in school. Commonly used for various content concerning writing and schooling.

Several platforms, including Apple, feature a cover with black-and-white marbling, evoking a classic <a href="https://www.format.com/magazine/features/design/who-designed-composition-notebook-history">composition book</a> used in the U.S. Apple&#39;s design displays Notes on its cover. <a href="/google/android-7.0/notebook/">Google</a>, <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/notebook/">Microsoft</a>, and <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/notebook/">Samsung&rsquo;s covers</a> were previously yellow or brown.

A variation of <a href="/ninja-cat/">Ninja Cat</a> which was shown wearing glasses, reading a <a href="/open-book/">book</a> and holding a <a href="/hot-beverage/">hot beverage</a>.&nbsp;This emoji was included in <a href="/microsoft/">Windows 10</a> as a proprietary <a href="/emoji-zwj-sequence/">ZWJ Sequence</a> which was not supported by other vendors.

Variations included the canonical <a href="/ninja-cat/">🐱&zwj;👤&nbsp;Ninja Cat</a>&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;<a href="/astro-cat/">🐱&zwj;🚀&nbsp;Astro Cat</a>,&nbsp;<a href="/dino-cat/">🐱&zwj;🐉&nbsp;Dino Cat</a>,&nbsp;<a href="/hacker-cat/">🐱&zwj;💻&nbsp;Hacker Cat</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="/stunt-cat/">🐱&zwj;🏍&nbsp;Stunt Cat</a>.

Skype has a series of emoji-like emoticons which have their own distinct animated appearance.

The Skype emoticon set differs from the emoji set from parent company Microsoft, which is used as&nbsp;<a href="/microsoft/">the system-wide emoji font in&nbsp;Windows 10</a>.

Skype uses its own system of shortcodes to enter each emoticon, for instance:

The majority of&nbsp;Skype Emoticons have&nbsp;equivalents in the Unicode Standard, while a number of emoticons go beyond what is offered by the standardized emoji set. For example, Skype&#39;s offers&nbsp;variety of additional pride-related flags alongside <a href="/pride/">🏳️&zwj;🌈 Pride</a>&nbsp;and <a href="/transgender-flag/">🏳️&zwj;⚧️&nbsp;Transgender Flag</a>, such as those shown below.
