A house, otherwise known as a home when someone is living in it. Suitable for a couple or larger family, other perhaps housemates.

Distinct from an apartment building due to its detached form, this house is likely in the suburbs of a city or a&nbsp;rural area.

A wide road shown from a first person perspective. Apple&#39;s artwork displays a road sign to Curpertino.

Motorway

A bicycle, sometimes called a push bike, used for transport or sport.

Bicycle

A motor scooter, which may be displayed as any type of motorbike with or without a step-through frame. Distinct from the <a href="/motorcycle/" title="🏍 Racing Motorcycle">racing motorcycle</a>, which is used for sport, not transport.

A red, octagonal sign. Used in many countries as a stop sign.

Octagonal Sign

A rectangular map of the world. Generally depicted as a paper map creased at its folds, Earth&rsquo;s surface shown in green on blue ocean.

Commonly represent maps, travel, exploration, and geography. May also represent various content concerning the world as a whole, e.g., global or international issues.

World Map

A small bus or minivan&nbsp;designed to carry fewer people than a full-sized <a href="/bus/" title="🚌 Bus">bus</a>. Displayed in white on most platforms&nbsp;(green <a href="/facebook/3.0/minibus/">on Facebook</a>).

Minibus

A yellow and green shield symbol, called a&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoshinsha_mark">Shoshinsha Mark</a>. Must be displayed by drivers in Japan for one year after they receive their drivers licence.

Similar to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L-plate">L-Plates</a>&nbsp;used to identify learner drivers in other countries.

Japanese Symbol for Beginner

A racing car which appears as a formula one vehicle or&nbsp;rally car on most platforms. Generally displayed&nbsp;in&nbsp;red.

Apple&#39;s version of this emoji features the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swift_(programming_language)">Swift (programming language) logo</a> on the side.

Racing Car

A fuel pump, used to fill up a <a href="/automobile/" title="🚗 Automobile">vehicle</a> with gas / petrol.

Shown as red or orange on most platforms. Apple&#39;s artwork shows a <a href="/droplet/">droplet</a> icon&nbsp;and the numbers 00322 but&nbsp;<a href="/apple/ios-6.0/fuel-pump/">previously</a> displayed the letter&nbsp;G on the front.

Fuel Pump

A blue or green Sport Utility Vehicle or station wagon, often with a spare tire on the back. Commonly used as a generic blue or green car.

Sport Utility Vehicle or SUV is an emoji whose meaning was likely lost in translation as it moved from Japanese phone carriers to the Unicode Standard in 2010.

This emoji goes back to the late 1990s when it was <a href="/docomo/1999/sport-utility-vehicle/">included in Docomo&#39;s emoji set</a>. In 2009, it appeared on a <a href="https://www.unicode.org/L2/L2009/09026r-emoji-proposed.pdf">proposal</a> as one of many symbols available on Japanese phones recommended to be encoded into the Unicode Standard. In that proposal, the symbol was referred to as a &quot;recreational vehicle&quot; or RV. The original Japanese emojis look more like station wagons or SUVs than RVs.

At various points, platforms including Google and Samsung showed this emoji as an RV, but ultimately the designs across platforms converged to a car that looks more like an SUV or station wagon. At a small scale this emoji is barely distinguishable from <a href="/automobile/">🚗 Automobile</a> on some platforms.

Recreational Vehicle

A car&nbsp;being shown from the front. The windscreen and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hood_(vehicle)">hood</a> (bonnet in British English) of the car can be seen&nbsp;facing forward.

This car shows in red or blue on most platforms. It was <a href="/google/android-11.0/oncoming-automobile/">previously</a> silver on Android.

Oncoming Automobile

An auto rickshaw, often referred to as a&nbsp;tuk tuk.&nbsp;This motorized version of a&nbsp;cycle rickshaw is&nbsp;used for transport in many regions of the world. Generally this emoji&nbsp;has three wheels&nbsp;and open sides without doors.

Auto Rickshaw

A metal wrench (spanner), as used for turning <a href="/nut-and-bolt/">nuts and bolts</a>. Depicted with two open, crescent-shaped ends or one open end and a closed, ring-shaped end. Generally positioned at a 45&deg; angle.

Commonly used for various content concerning tools, building, maintenance, and skilled trades like car mechanics and plumbing.

Wrench

A round metal gear with teeth.

Used to talk about tools and engineering (both hardware and software). Also commonly used to indicate settings on user interfaces.&nbsp;May also represent hard work, e.g., grinding in sports.

Samsung&rsquo;s design originally&nbsp;featured a white gear icon on a green square.

Gear

A key, as opens a <a href="/door/">door</a> or <a href="/locked/">lock</a>. Depicted at a 45&deg; angle as a gold, bronze, or copper key with a round head and notched blade. Commonly used for figurative senses of key, e.g., the key to success, being key&nbsp;(&quot;crucial&quot;).

DJ Khaled&nbsp;uses the emoji to indicate his&nbsp;<a href="http://snapchatemojis.com/verified/">Snapchat stories are official</a> (verified). Apple&rsquo;s design <a href="/apple/ios-9.1/key/">previously resembled</a> a gold <a href="/old-key/">🗝️ Old Key</a>, which emoji has similar applications.

May also represent digital keys in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public-key_cryptography">public-key technology</a>. This may explain why the emoji&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/emojipedia-now-with-https/">does not display in page titles</a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;Apple&rsquo;s Safari web browser, presumably to prevent less reputable sites from pretending to be secure (encrypted using&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTPS">HTTPS</a>).

A red or turquoise pickup truck. Used to talk about trucks or modes of transportation in general.

Pickup Truck

A cartoon-styled gust of air. Depicted as a small, gray <a href="/cloud/">cloud</a> with motion lines, rushing to the left.

Resembles <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lexicon_of_Comicana">briffits</a>, a stylized cloud of dust used in comics and animation to indicate someone or something has dashed away (e.g., leaving someone in the dust).

May be used to represent speed, smoking, and various types of wind, blown or broken. May precede&nbsp;other emoji, such as <a href="/person-running/">🏃Runner</a> or <a href="/automobile/">🚗 Automobile</a>, to indicate something is fast or fleeing:&nbsp;🏃💨, 🚗💨.

Not to be confused <a href="/wind-face/">🌬️ Wind Face</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Dash Symbol

A wheel with a rubber tire.

May be used in reference to wheels, tires, or vehicles with wheels. May also be used in expressions with &#39;wheel&#39; like third wheel or hell on wheels.

SoftBank&nbsp;<a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ja&amp;tl=en&amp;js=y&amp;prev=_t&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.softbank.jp%2Fmobile%2Finfo%2Fpersonal%2Fsoftware%2F20170120-02%2F&amp;edit-text=">announced</a> it would switch to using Google emoji designs from 2016, for&nbsp;phones supporting <a href="/google/android-7.0/">Android 7.0</a> or above.
