Google,&nbsp;and WhatsApp show&nbsp;this emoji with neutral eyes.&nbsp;Apple changed this emoji to show with smiling eyes&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/mask-wearing-emoji-now-smiles/">in iOS 14.2 and above</a>, as did Microsoft in their <a href="/microsoft/windows-11-november-2021-update/">Windows 11 November 2021</a> update.

In 2020, this emoji became <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/spread-of-the-coronavirus-emoji/">primarily used</a> in reference to <a href="/coronavirus/">Coronavirus / COVID-19</a>.

Face with Medical Mask

A yellow face with raised or furrowed eyebrows and a <a href="/thermometer/">thermometer</a> in its mouth. Often depicted with red cheeks, as if feverish. May be used to represent a <a href="/hospital/">hospital</a> patient or person with a cold or flu.

Differs from other smileys conveying illness, such as <a href="/nauseated-face/">🤢 Nauseated Face</a> (appearing as if it&#39;s&nbsp;going to vomit) or <a href="/face-with-head-bandage/">🤕 Face With Head-Bandage</a> (physical injury).

Can also be used figuratively to express finding something &#39;hot&#39;, i.e. attractive or arousing.

Face with Thermometer

A construction worker wearing a hard-hat (safety helmet). Has a high visibility vest or <a href="/hammer/" title="🔨 Hammer">hammer</a> in some variations.

Some platforms display a green cross on the <a href="/rescue-workers-helmet/" title="⛑ Helmet With White Cross">helmet</a> which is used in Japan as a safety reminder in <a href="/construction/" title="🚧 Construction Sign">construction</a> zones. It is also commonly seen on the <a href="http://megaman.wikia.com/wiki/Met">Met</a>&nbsp;helmet in the game&nbsp;Mega Man.

Construction Worker

A capsule of medicine. Generally depicted at a 45&deg; angle, half red, half yellow. Commonly used for content concerning health, medicine, and related professions as well various types of drugs.

Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/pill/">previously featured</a> a blue-and-white capsule with two round pills, one orange, the other white. <a href="/google/android-6.0.1/pill/">Google</a> and <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/pill/">Microsoft&rsquo;s</a> designs previously featured blue in their capsules.

Pill

A yellow face with scrunched, X-shaped eyes sneezing or blowing its nose into a white tissue, as if from a cold or allergies. Often depicted with a crumpled-looking mouth.

May also represent someone in an emotional state wiping away tears, as at a <a href="/wedding/">wedding</a>.

A yellow face with scrunched, X-shaped eyes spewing bright-green vomit. May represent physical illness or disgust, more intensely so than <a href="/nauseated-face/">🤢 Nauseated Face</a>.

Face with Open Mouth Vomiting

A mosquito, a type of bloodsucking fly. Depicted as a brown or black mosquito on its six, long legs, with wings, long abdomen, and needle-like mouth. Variously shown from above or facing left.

May be used to represent various insects, other <a href="/bug/">bugs</a> and bug bites, and insect-borne diseases (e.g., <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/malaria/index.html">malaria</a>). May also be used for metaphorical pests.

Facebook&rsquo;s mosquito&nbsp;has a red abdomen, as if filled with <a href="/drop-of-blood/">blood</a>.

Mosquito

A medical syringe, as used to administer a vaccine&nbsp;or draw <a href="/drop-of-blood/">blood</a>. Generally depicted at a 45&deg; angle with a needle to the upper right.

Commonly used for content concerning health, medicine, and related professions as well as various senses of needles, drugs, tattoos, blood, or more recently&nbsp;&ndash; <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/vaccine-emoji-comes-to-life/">coronavirus vaccination</a>.

Originally used for the representation of blood donation, and displayed with blood in the barrel. In 2021 many platforms are switching to a more general-purpose empty syringe.&nbsp;<a href="/google/android-7.0/syringe/">Google</a> and <a href="/facebook/1.0/syringe/">Facebook&rsquo;s</a> designs previously featured green liquids.

Syringe

A place where people are taken to receive medical care. This hospital has a large red cross on the front, often used as a symbol for health care.

Two masks often used on maps to indicate a theatre, these originate in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theatre_of_ancient_Greece">Greek Theatre</a> as masks of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragicomedy#mediaviewer/File:TragicComicMasksHadriansVillamosaic.jpg">tragedy and comedy</a>.

Generally depicted as a squiggly, single-celled microorganism with prominent <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cilium">cilia</a>. Color, shape, and position vary across platforms.&nbsp;Commonly used to represent bacteria, viruses, and germs and disease more generally.

In 2020, this emoji became <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/spread-of-the-coronavirus-emoji/">primarily used</a> in reference to <a href="/coronavirus/">Coronavirus / COVID-19</a>.

Apple&#39;s version of this emoji most closely represents a virus, while others from&nbsp;Samsung, Microsoft and&nbsp;Twitter&nbsp;appear as bright green bacteria. Other versions of this emoji also appear mainly as bacteria:&nbsp;Facebook&#39;s is&nbsp;indigo, and WhatsApp&rsquo;s purple. Google&rsquo;s design <a href="/google/android-9.0/microbe/">previously displayed</a> five microbes in&nbsp;different, bright colors.

Microbe

Clear safety goggles. When this emoji was approved in 2018 it was&nbsp;implied to be safety goggles rather than swimming goggles. A year later&nbsp;<a href="/diving-mask/">🤿&nbsp;Diving Mask</a>, which is&nbsp;similar in design&nbsp;but used&nbsp;to represent swimming goggles rather than safety goggles,&nbsp;was approved.

Released in&nbsp;October&nbsp;2010, Unicode 6.0 was the first version of the Unicode Standard to support emoji.

Some characters in <a href="/unicode-5.2/">prior</a>&nbsp;versions of Unicode were retroactively updated to provide&nbsp;an emoji presentation. This release was the first to introduce new characters for the sole purpose of compatability with emojis being used in Japan.

South Korean financial technology company Toss (토스) provides its own emoji design set within its mobile application. The design set, entitled Toss Face (토스페이스), has also been made available as a free font file for Apple devices.

First launched in early 2022, the Toss Face emoji set originally included a series of intentionally divergent emoji designs compared to those of other vendors.

The majority of these divergent designs followed two broad themes. Firstly,&nbsp;rendering culturally-specific Japanese emojis with designs representing related South Korean concepts (e.g. the <a href="/sake/">🍶 Sake</a> emoji appearing as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makgeolli">makgeolli</a>).

Secondly, emojis&nbsp;representing older technologies with designs representing more contemporary innovations. (e.g. <a href="/pager/">📟 Pager</a> displaying as instant messaging speech bubbles; <a href="/auto-rickshaw/">🛺 Auto Rickshaw</a> being displyed as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unmanned_aerial_vehicle">drone</a>).

In March 2022 these divergent designs were updated to accurately reflect Unicode&#39;s recommendations. In April 2022 they were re-added to the Toss app using <a href="https://emojipedia.org/glossary/">Private Use Area</a> codepoints.&nbsp;
