Twemoji&nbsp;was initially created in 2014 as an <a href="http://github.com/twitter/twemoji">open source emoji project</a>, created and owned by Twitter. However, following the privatization of Twitter in April 2022, the project appears to have been discontinued by X. The project has been continued as a <a href="https://github.com/jdecked/twemoji">standalone open source project</a> by former Twitter staff alongside members of the <a href="/discord">Discord</a> design team.

In February 2023 the Twemoji set ceased to be used by Twitter / X on mobile devices, replaced by the device&#39;s native emoji designs. After January 2024&nbsp; the dedicated&nbsp;<a href="https://twemoji.twitter.com/">Twemoji website</a> was also shut down (an archived version of the site from January 2024 <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20240129051934/https://twemoji.twitter.com/">can be seen here</a>).

Emojis from Twemoji are found on&nbsp;the Twitter / X website (Twtter.com / X.com),&nbsp;X Pro (formerly TweetDeck),&nbsp;Twitter for Android,&nbsp;<a href="/discord/">Discord</a>, <a href="/roblox/">Roblox</a>, and other apps.&nbsp;The Twitter / X app for iOS has always used&nbsp;the native emojis provided by Apple.

Hashmojis&nbsp;(previously known as&nbsp;hashflags, and later&nbsp;Custom Twitter emojis)&nbsp;are enabled for some&nbsp;events or promotions. These display on Twitter / X for a limited time, after specific hashtags.

Since 2021&nbsp;glossy Twemoji Stickers began showing in <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/new-glossy-twemoji-designs-appear-in-fleets/">select locations across Twitter</a>, but as of early 2022 these glossy designs have yet to be used within the Twemoji emoji set. As of October 2022, these glossy sticker designs have been available for use within the Twitter mobile image editor and are featured within the platform&#39;s Twitter Status feature.

Another minor update to the X / Twitter emoji set, once again updating the&nbsp;<a href="/pistol">🔫&nbsp;Water Pistol</a> emoji design.

The update began rolling out for users on 2024-08-14, at which time it was made&nbsp;available for X web client users and also on the X iOS app. It is expected to be available for Android users shortly.

Rolled out on 2023-07-23, this minor update to the Twemoji emoji set revised the designs of the <a href="https://emojipedia.org/face-with-medical-mask">😷 Face with Medical Mask</a>, <a href="https://emojipedia.org/pleading-face">🥺 Pleading Face</a>, and <a href="https://emojipedia.org/face-holding-back-tears">🥹 Face Holding Back Tears</a> emojis.

Twemoji 12.1.5 was the first Twemoji release to provide support for <a href="/emoji-12.1/">Emoji 12.1</a>. Twemoji 12.1.5

An update to Twemoji began rolling out to users on 2019-11-06 and was<a href="https://github.com/twitter/twemoji/releases/tag/v12.1.4"> added to the open source repository</a> on 2019-11-13. This release&nbsp;gave a gender-inclusive appearance to most human emojis when a gender isn&#39;t specified.

Note: this did not add support for additional gender-neutral sequences approved in <a href="/emoji-12.1/">Emoji 12.1</a>&nbsp;- instead it changed the appearance of existing neutral emojis.

<a href="/discord/">Discord</a> updated its emoji support to Twemoji 12.1.4 in November 2019, in the first emoji update on the platform since 2016.
