This update to Google&#39;s Noto Color Emoji set introduced support for 2023&#39;s <a href="https://emojipedia.org/emoji-15.1">Emoji 15.1</a> recommendations.

Additionally, the family emojis have been changed to have a silhouette icon design, matching the new non-gender-specifying family emojis from&nbsp;<a href="https://emojipedia.org/emoji-15.1">Emoji 15.1</a>.

First made available via Github on 2023-11-17, this update is expected to be&nbsp;released progressively across different Google platforms such as Chrome OS, Gmail, YouTube, and various Android devices.

First released as a&nbsp;color vector&nbsp;font file on 2022-09-14, this update to Google&#39;s Noto Color Emoji set introduced support for <a href="https://emojipedia.org/emoji-15.0/">Emoji 15.0</a> emoji such as <a href="https://emojipedia.org/shaking-face/">Shaking Face</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://emojipedia.org/pink-heart/">Pink Heart</a>.

This update also included minor revisions to select emoji designs,&nbsp;including all of the hand gestures.

The update was released progressively across different Google platforms such as Chrome OS, Gmail, and YouTube between September 2022 and their release within&nbsp;Android 13 in March 2023.&nbsp;

15.0

First made available via as a&nbsp;Developer Preview on&nbsp;2021-10-27, Android 12L was&nbsp;the first vendor update to&nbsp;include support for 2021&rsquo;s <a href="/emoji-14.0/">Emoji 14.0</a> recommendations. Devices running Android 12&nbsp;also began to receive this emoji update via subsequent security updates.&nbsp;

Android 12L

A friendly, cartoon-styled whale, shown spouting water from its blowhole. Generally depicted as a light-blue whale in full profile facing left, with a round body and white underside, its tail held upright.

Often used with an affectionate tone. Not to be confused with the more lifelike <a href="/whale/">🐋 Whale</a>, though their applications may overlap.

WhatsApp&rsquo;s whale is gray, as <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/spouting-whale/">Microsoft</a> and <a href="/facebook/1.0/spouting-whale/">Facebook&rsquo;s</a> whales previously were. <a href="/twitter/twemoji-1.0/spouting-whale/">Twitter&rsquo;s</a> whale was previously purple.

Spouting Whale

A crab, a squat crustacean with pincers. Depicted as a reddish-orange crab (as cooked) shown from above, with a round, shelled body, shorted, tentacle-like eyes, and ten legs, the top two of which are large pincers.

May be used to represent crab as food or metaphorical senses of crab (e.g., crabby). Often used to represent <a href="/cancer/">♋ Cancer</a>, the Crab, in the Western zodiac.

Not to be confused with <a href="/lobster/">🦞 Lobster</a>.

Facebook&rsquo;s pincers have black tips.

Crab

A whale, the massive marine mammal. Generally depicted as a light-blue whale in full profile facing left, with its tail curving down towards is huge mouth. Shown with a white, textured underside, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humpback_whale">humpback</a> or&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_whale">blue whale</a>.

Not to be confused with the more cartoon-styled <a href="/spouting-whale/">🐳 Spouting Whale</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Apple and Google&#39;s whales have slightly open mouths, revealing <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baleen">baleen</a>.

Whale

A dolphin, a sleek marine mammal known to be social and intelligent. Generally depicted as a light-blue dolphin with a white belly in full profile facing left, its short snout curving down to a prominent dorsal fin and tail, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottlenose_dolphin">bottlenose</a> dolphin leaping in the air.

May be used for various content concerning <a href="/person-swimming/">swimming</a>, oceans, <a href="/beach-with-umbrella/">beaches</a>, and summer fun. Not be confused with <a href="/shark/">🦈 Shark</a>.

WhatsApp and Facebook&rsquo;s dolphins are gray, as <a href="/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/dolphin/">Microsoft</a> and <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/dolphin/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> previously were.

Dolphin

A common fish, as swims in the water. Depicted as a generic, light-blue fish, often with a white underside, in full profile facing left, with fins and prominent gill cover.

May be used to represent a variety of other fish (freshwater or saltwater), <a href="/fishing-pole/">fishing</a>, metaphorical senses of fish, and fish as food, as consumed in the form of <a href="/sushi/">🍣 Sushi</a>. May be used to represent <a href="/pisces/">♓ Pisces</a>, the Fish, in the Western zodiac.

Not to be confused with <a href="/tropical-fish/">🐠 Tropical Fish</a> or <a href="/blowfish/">🐡 Blowfish</a>, though their applications may overlap. Vendors implement a similar design to the fish caught on the <a href="/fishing-pole/">🎣 Fishing Pole</a>.

Microsoft&rsquo;s fish was <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/fish/">previously</a> yellow.

Fish

A tropical fish, as swims in the warm waters of a coral reef or is kept as a pet in an aquarium. Depicted as a brightly colored fish in full profile facing left, with slender fins. Often shown as a blue-and-yellow fish with stripes, as an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pterophyllum">angelfish</a>.

May be used to represent a variety of fish (saltwater or freshwater), <a href="/fishing-pole/">fishing</a>, metaphorical senses of fish, and fish as food, as consumed in the form of <a href="/sushi/">🍣 Sushi</a>. <a href="/google/android-7.0/tropical-fish/">Google</a> and <a href="/facebook/1.0/tropical-fish/">Facebook&rsquo;s</a> fish previously resembled a goldfish, while&nbsp;<a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/tropical-fish/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a>&nbsp;was black and white.&nbsp;Microsoft&rsquo;s fish was previously&nbsp;<a href="/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/tropical-fish/">orange with white stripes</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="/microsoft/windows-10/tropical-fish/">yellow and blue</a> before that.

Tropical Fish

A blowfish (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetraodontidae">puffer</a>), which puffs up and becomes spiky when alarmed. Depicted as an orange or brown blowfish in full profile facing left, with small fins, a white underside, and a round, spiky body, as if inflated.

Called <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fugu">fugu</a> in Japan, where it&rsquo;s consumed as a delicacy.

Blowfish

An octopus, a sea animal with eight legs, known to change color and release&nbsp;ink. Generally depicted as a pink or orange octopus facing forward, with a large, round head, prominent eyes, and its tentacle-like arms raised at its sides. Platforms vary in the number of arms shown, ranging from four to the full eight, with several designs featuring suckers on them.

Not to be confused with <a href="/squid/">🦑 Squid</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Twitter&rsquo;s octopus is purple. Apple&rsquo;s has a friendly, cartoon-styled appearance. <a href="/google/android-7.0/octopus/">Google</a> and <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/octopus/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> octopuses previously looked surprised, while <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/octopus/">Microsoft&#39;s</a>&nbsp;suggested an <a href="/alien-monster/">👾 Alien Monster</a>.

Octopus

A wave of water, as breaks at the beach. Depicted as a blue wave with a foamy, white crest, curling to the right.

May be used to represent water in general, various bodies of water like oceans, and water activities, such as&nbsp;<a href="/person-swimming/">swimming</a>, <a href="/person-surfing/">surfing</a>, and <a href="/sailboat/">sailing</a>. May also&nbsp;be used to represent metaphorical waves.

Apple&rsquo;s design resembles the iconic wave in&nbsp;Japanese artist Hokusai&rsquo;s famous woodblock print, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Wave_off_Kanagawa">The Great Wave off Kanagawa</a>&nbsp;(ca. 1830).

Water Wave

A person swimming in a pool, the <a href="/water-wave/" title="🌊 Water Wave">ocean</a>, or another body of water.&nbsp;Lacked goggles&nbsp;on prior versions of iOS.

Swimmer

A shrimp (prawn), a small crustacean with a long tail. Generally depicted as a reddish-orange shrimp (as cooked) in full profile facing left, with tiny eyes, many limbs, and its long antennae curling back as its long tail curls in.

May be consumed in the form of <a href="/fried-shrimp/">🍤 Fried Shrimp</a> or <a href="/shallow-pan-of-food/">🥘 Shallow Pan of Food</a>. Often used to represent seafood.

Shrimp

A lobster, a large crustacean with a prominent tail and pincers. Depicted as a reddish-orange lobster (as cooked) from above, with a long body and tail, short, tentacle-like eyes, and ten legs, the top of which are very large pincers.

Often used to represent lobster as food as well as in connection to the US state of Maine.

In its release year of 2018, Emojipedia&rsquo;s original sample image was criticized as anatomically incorrect but was shortly after <a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/skateboard-dna-and-lobster-updated/">resolved</a>. That year, the transgender community <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/trans-activists-lobster-emoji-flag-charlie-craggs-unicode-nail-it-a8474476.html">embraced</a> the lobster as a symbol for their efforts for <a href="/transgender-flag/">Transgender Flag</a>&nbsp;emoji.

Samsung, WhatsApp, and Facebook&rsquo;s lobsters are depicted at an angle.

Lobster

A shark, a large, stealthy fish with many teeth. Generally depicted as a gray shark in full profile facing left, as a&nbsp;<a href="/dolphin/">tiger</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bull_shark">bull</a>, or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_white_shark">great white shark</a> hunting in the water. Shown with a white underside and three gills, its pointed nose and teeth-lined mouth curving down to a sharp dorsal fin and long, pointed tail.

Shark

A seashell, as found at the <a href="/beach-with-umbrella/">beach</a>. Generally depicted as an empty, spiraling, white seashell, as grown by a sea <a href="/snail/">snail</a> or home to a hermit crab. Positioned at various angles across platforms.

Often used for various content concerning beaches, ocean and ocean life, and summer fun.

Apple&rsquo;s design <a href="/apple/ios-4.0/spiral-shell/">previously</a> resembled a clam shell, <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/spiral-shell/">Microsoft&rsquo;s</a> a snail shell. <a href="/google/android-7.0/spiral-shell/">Google&rsquo;s</a> was previously blue.

Spiral Shell

Half of an opened oyster shell with gray, pink, or orange flesh inside. Many platforms also include a pearl in the shell.

Oyster

A gray seal with dark eyes and a dark nose. Most platforms feature a design with whiskers.

Can be used to talk about seals, marine life, or cute animals in general. May also be used in phrases with &#39;sealed&#39; as in sealed with a kiss, my lips are sealed, or&nbsp;signed, sealed, and delivered.
