Samsung devices use <a href="https://news.samsung.com/global/samsungs-emoji-suite-makes-for-a-more-emotional-digital-world">their own emoji designs</a>&nbsp;which are different to those used on other <a href="/google/">Android devices</a>. These&nbsp;glossy emojis&nbsp;appear on devices such as the Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note series and are updated as part of the Samsung One UI interface layer (previously Samsung Experience, before that Samsung TouchWiz)&nbsp;which runs on top of Android.

Note that Samsung users may see select emojis display as their <a href="/google/">Google</a>&nbsp;set design. This is due to <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/faster-emoji-updates-on-the-way-for-android-apps/">Android AppCompat</a>, which will display a Google emoji design within an app or web platform&nbsp;when a Samsung device has not yet been updated to support that particular emoji.

Note:&nbsp;<a href="/whatsapp/">WhatsApp</a>, <a href="/twitter/">Twitter</a>, and <a href="/facebook/">Facebook</a> have their&nbsp;own emoji designs&nbsp;which are used&nbsp;instead of Google or Samsung emojis in their respective apps on Android devices.

A pointed knife with a steel blade, as used for thrusting in close combat. Generally depicted as double-edged with a black, brown or gold&nbsp;cross-shaped hilt and positioned at 45&deg; angle, often with its tip at the lower left.

May represent knives and other bladed weapons (cf. <a href="/crossed-swords/">⚔️&nbsp;Crossed Swords</a>) as well as various senses of cutting and stabbing. Often applied to medieval or fantasy content.

Google&rsquo;s design&nbsp;<a href="/google/android-9.0/dagger/">previously</a> featured&nbsp;an icy-blue blade and <a href="/sparkles/">sparkles</a>, suggests a dagger <a href="/elf/">elves</a> may wield in fantasy.

May be paired with (or defended by) <a href="/shield/">🛡️&nbsp;Shield</a>. Not to be confused with <a href="/kitchen-knife/">🔪&nbsp;Kitchen Knife</a>.

Dagger Knife

A person shown in the sport of fencing, with a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapier">Rapier-style sword</a>, mask, and protective clothing.

Fencer

A <a title="🇬🇧 Flag For Great Britain" href="/flag-united-kingdom/">British</a> guardsman, known as a foot guard. Wears a tall black hat with a yellow chin-strap. Must look straight ahead at all times, even when tourists attempt to distract them.

Guardsman

A traditional Japanese Castle (城, shiro or jō), usually made from stone and wood.

Japanese Castle

A castle, in a style&nbsp;that can be found in <a href="/flag-france/" title="🇫🇷 Flag for France">France</a>&nbsp;and other parts of <a href="/flag-european-union/" title="🇪🇺 Flag for European Union">Europe</a>.

European Castle

A horse, a hoofed mammal used for riding and racing. Depicted as a brown horse in full profile galloping to the left, with a dark, flowing mane and tail.

May be used to represent various types of horses and their metaphorical senses (e.g., mustang, stallion).

May also be used as a compliment to an attractive person.

A knife with a long steel blade, as a <a href="/woman-cook/">chef</a> uses to slice <a href="/cut-of-meat/">meat</a> or vegetables. Depicted with a black or brown handle and positioned at a 45&deg; angle, often with its point at the lower right.

May be used for content concerning cooking and food preparation, but often represents various senses of cutting and stabbing.&nbsp;Its Unicode name, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_kitchen_knife">Hocho</a>, means &ldquo;kitchen knife&rdquo; in Japanese and refers to a variety of knives used in <a href="/flag-japan/">Japan</a>.

Hocho

A large red cross mark, displayed in the shape of a letter X and similar to a <a href="/heavy-multiplication-x/" title="✖️ Heavy Multiplication X">multiplication sign</a>.

Cross Mark

Two <a href="/flag-japan/" title="🇯🇵 Flag for Japan">Japanese Flags</a>, crossed at the base. Except on some Samsung devices, which have <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-6.0/crossed-flags/">previously displayed</a>&nbsp;two <a href="/flag-south-korea/" title="🇰🇷 Flag for South Korea">South Korean flags</a>.

Crossed Flags

A supernatural being, which is generally&nbsp;shown to be&nbsp;imprisoned within a bottle or lamp. May be&nbsp;capable of granting wishes when summoned. Variations exist for a <a href="/woman-genie/">female genie</a> or <a href="/man-genie/">male genie</a>.

Heavy Multiplication X

A squirt gun (water pistol), as used to <a href="/sweat-droplets/">spray water</a> for fun.

On major platforms, depicted as a green or orange toy gun with an orange tip and barrel pointed left.&nbsp;Google&nbsp;and Facebook&rsquo;s designs include mounted reservoirs.

Originally depicted as a classic handgun, as a revolver or other pistol. In 2016, <a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/apple-and-the-gun-emoji/">Apple switched its design</a> from weapon&nbsp;to toy; other major vendors followed suit by 2018. Deprecated emoji sets or smaller platforms still display the emoji as a handgun.

Microsoft <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/pistol/">initially displayed</a> the emoji as a toy ray gun before switching to a revolver, then squirt gun. Google <a href="/google/android-4.4/pistol/">once featured</a> a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blunderbuss">blunderbuss</a>.

Pistol

A safety razor, depicted in various colors across platforms.

Previously shown as a&nbsp;straight razor by <a href="/microsoft/windows-10-may-2019-update/razor/">Microsoft</a>, <a href="/whatsapp/2.19.352/razor/">WhatsApp</a>, and <a href="/joypixels/5.0/razor/">JoyPixels</a>.

Razor

A hammer and pick, as used for breaking up rocks in mining, crossed in an X shape. Generally depicted as metal, mallet- and chisel-styled hammers with wooden handles. The heads of the tools face up, with the pick usually at the right. Often used for various content concerning tools, building, and construction.

Facebook implements the same designs as for its <a href="/hammer/">🔨&nbsp;Hammer</a> and <a href="/pick/">⛏️&nbsp;Pick</a>. Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-2.0/">previously featured</a> stylized, white tools on a green square, as a sign or icon of a mine.

Hammer and Pick

A hammer and wrench, as kept in a <a href="/toolbox/">toolbox</a>, crossed in an X shape. Depicted with metal tools facing up, the hammer positioned at the upper left. Most vendors implement the same design as for their <a href="/hammer/">🔨&nbsp;Hammer</a> and <a href="/wrench/">🔧&nbsp;Wrench</a>.

Commonly used for various content concerning tools, building, construction, and work, both manual and digital.

Hammer and Wrench

A cartoon human <a href="/skull/">skull</a> atop an X-shaped pair of <a href="/bone/">bones</a>, as on a <a href="/pirate-flag/">pirate flag</a> or poison symbol. Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.0/skull-and-crossbones/">previously displayed</a>&nbsp;a skull and crossbones on a yellow triangle, indicating a hazardous material.

May represent various ideas of death or danger, e.g., dying from laughter or killing it with great skill. May also represent various pirate characters or mascots.

Popular around <a href="/halloween/">Halloween</a>. Not to be confused with <a href="/skull/">💀&nbsp;Skull</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Skull and Crossbones

Male royalty, intended as a gender pair for the <a href="/princess/" title="👸 Princess">princess emoji</a>. Shown as a <a href="/man/" title="👨 Man">man</a> with a crown.

Not a reference to the musician Prince, however the <a href="/man-singer/">man singer emoji on WhatsApp</a> does show a character that bears a heavy resemblance to this artist.

Prince

A&nbsp;ribbon and medallion generally&nbsp;awarded&nbsp;to a&nbsp;person in the military for heroic acts.

Military Medal

A shield, as blocks swords in close combat. Color and style varies across platforms, but generally depicted in a <a href="/kite/">kite</a> shape with a metal border and simple pattern.

Commonly used to represent various content concerning battle, defense, security, and protection.

Apple and Microsoft&rsquo;s designs feature a red and white sawtooth pattern, Facebook and WhatsApp&rsquo;s blue and white checkers.

Depicted as a green, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_dragon">Chinese-styled dragon</a> in full profile facing left. Generally shown with a curling, snake-like body, clawed feet, yellowish scales on its back, horn-like structures on its head, and whisker-like tendrils by its nostrils.

Depicted as a green, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_dragon">Chinese-styled dragon</a> looking straight ahead or facing left. Often shown with huge nostrils, baring large teeth and a red tongue, with antler-like structures on its head, whisker-like tendrils by its nostrils, and a green or yellow mane.

The following characters we added to Unicode in 2005 and&nbsp;given emoji presentation status in the years 2010-2015.

Skype has a series of emoji-like emoticons which have their own distinct animated appearance.

A subset of Skype emoticons were available in Microsoft Teams before the 3D versions of Microsoft&#39;s new Fluent emoji set began <a href="https://twitter.com/Emojipedia/status/1491752269880115200">rolling out in February 2022</a>.

The Skype emoticon set differs from the emoji set from parent company Microsoft, which is used as&nbsp;<a href="/microsoft/">the system-wide emoji font in&nbsp;Windows 10</a>.

Skype uses its own system of shortcodes to enter each emoticon, for instance:

These shortcodes are replaced by the emoticon within Skype. If using a Unicode-compatible emoji code point, this will be given the system-wide emoji appearance:&nbsp;<a href="/microsoft/">Microsoft</a> set on Skype for Windows, <a href="/apple/">Apple</a> set on Skype for macOS or iOS, <a href="/samsung/">Samsung</a> set on phones using&nbsp;OneUI.

The majority of&nbsp;Skype Emoticons have&nbsp;equivalents in the Unicode Standard, while a number of emoticons go beyond what is offered by the standardized emoji set. For example, Skype&#39;s offers&nbsp;variety of additional pride-related flags alongside <a href="/pride/">🏳️&zwj;🌈 Pride</a>&nbsp;and <a href="/transgender-flag/">🏳️&zwj;⚧️&nbsp;Transgender Flag</a>, such as those shown below.
