Most often shown as holding either a blue or black pen, though Microsoft&#39;s design has a red pen. LG&#39;s design displays a left hand, while all other platforms show&nbsp;a right hand. Used broadly to represent writing.

Also used between words to show that a lesson is being learned and to indicate someone is taking notes. For example, ✍️look✍️both✍️ways✍️before✍️you✍️cross✍️the✍️street. This use&nbsp;was popularized in <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/what-happens-in-the-tiktok-comments/">TikTok comments</a>. It uses the established practice of placing emojis between words for emphasis. Possibly influenced by the emphatic use of <a href="/zh/%E9%BC%93%E6%8E%8C/">👏 Clapping Hands</a>, which reflects speech-gesture pairings in Black English in the United States.

Previously displayed&nbsp;on <a href="/zh/microsoft/windows-10/%E5%AD%A6%E6%A0%A1/">Windows </a>as&nbsp;a collection of school-related items: an <a href="/zh/%E7%BA%A2%E8%8B%B9%E6%9E%9C/" title="🍎 Red Apple">apple</a>, <a href="/zh/%E7%9B%B4%E5%B0%BA/" title="📏 Straight Ruler">ruler</a>, and <a href="/zh/%E9%93%85%E7%AC%94/" title="✏ Pencil">pencil</a>.

A spool of thread, as used for sewing. Thread color varies across platforms, though often depicted in red or blue and on a wooden spool. Sometimes shown with an end unraveling.

Commonly used for various content concerning sewing, knitting, arts and crafts, clothing and fashion, and metaphorical threads (e.g., a discussion thread online).

WhatsApp&nbsp;and Microsoft&#39;s&nbsp;designs includes a needle.

A ball of yarn, as used to knit a <a href="/zh/%E5%9B%B4%E5%B7%BE/">scarf</a>. Color varies across platforms, but often depicted in green, blue, or magenta and shown with an end unraveling. Sometimes depicted with a pair of knitting needles stuck in the ball.

Commonly used for content concerning schooling,&nbsp;building, and&nbsp;measurement&nbsp;in various disciplines. May also represent various concepts of straightness and size.

直尺

A pair of scissors, as used to cut paper or <a href="/zh/%E7%90%86%E5%8F%91/">hair</a>. Generally shown open, blades down, with red handles. Commonly used for content concerning haircuts, fashion design, arts and crafts, and various senses of cutting.

WhatsApp&rsquo;s design features green handles with blades pointed up.

The Unicode Consortium approved the following characters as part of <a href="http://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode7.0.0/">Unicode 7.0</a>, released on June 16, 2014.&nbsp;Support for these emoji characters rely on updates from platform vendors such as Apple, Google and Microsoft.

Initially, 250&nbsp;new characters in Unicode 7.0 were approved for emoji presentation, however this was later reduced to 103 Standard Additions which are listed below. The other characters remain part of Unicode, but are not recommended&nbsp;to be included as emojis.

The exception to this was the <a href="/zh/%E6%9C%9D%E5%B7%A6%E7%9A%84%E8%AF%9D%E8%AF%AD%E6%B0%94%E6%B3%A1/" title="🗨 Left Speech Bubble">Left Speech Bubble</a>, and as such wasn&#39;t initially specified on other platforms as an emoji. A later-accepted&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/diverse-spy-proposal/">proposal</a> updated this.

Samsung devices use <a href="https://news.samsung.com/global/samsungs-emoji-suite-makes-for-a-more-emotional-digital-world">their own emoji designs</a>&nbsp;which are different to those used on other <a href="/zh/google/">Android devices</a>. These&nbsp;glossy emojis&nbsp;appear on devices such as the Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note series and are updated as part of the Samsung One UI interface layer (previously Samsung Experience, before that Samsung TouchWiz)&nbsp;which runs on top of Android.

Note that Samsung users may see select emojis display as their <a href="/zh/google/">Google</a>&nbsp;set design. This is due to <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/faster-emoji-updates-on-the-way-for-android-apps/">Android AppCompat</a>, which will display a Google emoji design within an app or web platform&nbsp;when a Samsung device has not yet been updated to support that particular emoji.

Since the introduction of Samsung&#39;s emoji set in 2014, various Unicode characters that have not been recommended to have emoji presentation have nevertheless been given a colorful emoji design on Samsung platforms. You can view many of these characters&nbsp;<a href="/zh/non-rgi-emoji-presentation">here</a>.

Note:&nbsp;<a href="/zh/whatsapp/">WhatsApp</a>, <a href="/zh/twitter/">Twitter</a>, and <a href="/zh/facebook/">Facebook</a> have their&nbsp;own emoji designs&nbsp;which are used&nbsp;instead of Google or Samsung emojis in their respective apps on Android devices.
