Japanese koinobori, decorative, carp-shaped windsocks flown in celebration of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children%27s_Day_(Japan)">Children&rsquo;s Day</a>&nbsp;on May 5 in Japan. Generally depicted as a blue and red stylized carp fish on a golden pole.

When not applied to Children&rsquo;s Day, used for various idiosyncratic purposes. SoftBank&rsquo;s design resembles more traditional <a href="http://www.koinobori-japan.jp/koinobori.html">koinobori</a>.

Carp Streamer

A grotesque, red face with horns, wide eyes, a large nose, crooked fangs, and a fringe of shaggy hair. Depicts an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oni">oni</a>, a kind of hideous ogre in Japanese folklore.

On <a href="/new-years-eve/">New Year&rsquo;s Eve</a> in some parts of Japan, men may wear&nbsp;oni masks and straw coats to dress up as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Namahage">namahage</a>, another mythic being,&nbsp;to chide naughty children or ward off evil. <a href="/google/android-7.0/tropical-fish/">Google</a> and <a href="/facebook/1.0/tropical-fish/">Facebook&rsquo;s</a> fish previously resembled a goldfish, while&nbsp;<a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/tropical-fish/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a>&nbsp;was black and white.&nbsp;Microsoft&rsquo;s fish was previously&nbsp;<a href="/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/tropical-fish/">orange with white stripes</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="/microsoft/windows-10/tropical-fish/">yellow and blue</a> before that.

Called <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fugu">fugu</a> in Japan, where it&rsquo;s consumed as a delicacy.

Blowfish

A sparkler: a form of hand-held firework often used at parties and celebrations. The sparkler is lit at one end, and&nbsp;held at the other.&nbsp;

Most platforms display this with the lit end held down, as is the style for&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senko_hanabi">senko hanabi</a>&nbsp;(&quot;incense-stick fireworks&quot;) which is&nbsp;a traditional&nbsp;sparkler from&nbsp;from Japan.

Like <a href="/party-popper/">🎉 Party Popper</a>, commonly used to convey congratulations and celebration, as on <a href="/new-years-eve/">New Year&rsquo;s Eve</a>, <a href="/birthday/">birthdays</a>, <a href="/wedding-marriage/">wedding days</a>, <a href="/graduation/">graduations</a>, and other special occasions or good times more generally.

Its design across platforms&mdash;and&nbsp;inclusion in <a href="/au-kddi/type-c-2/confetti-ball/">early sets from au by KDDI</a>&mdash;suggest&nbsp;the emoji is a Japanese <a href="https://jisho.org/search/kusudama">kusudama</a>, a decorative ball used at such festive occasions as opening ceremonies.

Confetti Ball

A Japanese <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kadomatsu">kadomatsu</a>, composed of pine leaves and bamboo shoots. Traditionally placed outside homes in Japan around the New Year to welcome spirits for a plentiful, happy year ahead.

Depicted as three shoots of <a href="/tanabata-tree/">bamboo</a>, arranged vertically at different heights in a wooden container, arrayed with pine leaves.

Often used to represent various plants or as a green accent color.

WhatsApp&rsquo;s kadomatsu is adorned with red berries, as is Facebook&rsquo;s, which also includes pink <a href="/cherry-blossom/">cherry blossoms</a>.

Occasionally used for content concerning various senses of wind and chime. Thanks to its appearance, often used to represent jellyfish.

A triangular red flag on a post.&nbsp;Most commonly associated with <a href="/person-golfing/" title="🏌 Golfer">golf</a>, as shown&nbsp;in the&nbsp;<a href="/flag-in-hole/" title="⛳ Flag In Hole">flag in hole emoji</a>. Can also be used to represent the term red flag, signaling&nbsp;a problem or issue.
