A hand holding a <a href="/pen/" title="🖊 Lower Left Ballpoint Pen">pen</a> or <a href="/pencil/" title="✏️ Pencil">pencil</a> and writing. Most often shown as holding either a blue or black pen, though Microsoft&#39;s design has a red pen. LG&#39;s design displays a left hand, while all other platforms show&nbsp;a right hand. Used broadly to represent writing.

Also used between words to show that a lesson is being learned and to indicate someone is taking notes. For example, ✍️look✍️both✍️ways✍️before✍️you✍️cross✍️the✍️street. This use&nbsp;was popularized in <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/what-happens-in-the-tiktok-comments/">TikTok comments</a>. It uses the established practice of placing emojis between words for emphasis. Possibly influenced by the emphatic use of <a href="/clapping-hands/">👏 Clapping Hands</a>, which reflects speech-gesture pairings in Black English in the United States.

Writing Hand

A gesture showing the index finger and&nbsp;thumb touching&nbsp;to make an open circle. Represents &ldquo;I&rsquo;m okay&rdquo; or &ldquo;yes, that&rsquo;s correct / good&rdquo;.

In American Sign Language (ASL), the number nine is represented with this gesture. The same hand sign can be seen as offensive in some cultures, including in parts of Europe, the Middle East, and South America.

This can also be used as&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/no-the-ok-hand-is-not-a-symbol-of-white-power/">a&nbsp;symbol of White Supremacy</a>, depending on context.

OK Hand Sign

A hand with thumb and index finger in close proximity. Used to suggest that&nbsp;something is small, or to gesture a&nbsp;small amount.

Pinching Hand

Two hands clapping emoji, which when used multiple times can be used&nbsp;as a round of applause.

Clapping Hands Sign

A classic yellow pencil. Depicted as a graphite pencil, like a U.S. #2 or European HB, with a sharpened tip and pink eraser. Positioned at a 45&deg; angle, with its tip at the lower left or right. Commonly used for various content concerning writing, drawing, and schooling.

Samsung&rsquo;s pencil was <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/pencil/">previously red</a>, Google&rsquo;s <a href="/google/android-7.0/pencil/">green</a>.

Pencil

The silver <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nib_(pen)">nib</a> of a fountain pen, which distributes ink onto a writing surface. Positioned at a 45&deg; angle, with its tip at the lower left or right. Like&nbsp;<a href="/fountain-pen/">🖋️&nbsp;Fountain Pen</a>, commonly used for various content concerning writing, drawing, and signing (e.g., laws, deals, in sports).

Several platforms, including Google, Microsoft, and Samsung, depict only a nib, sometimes ringed with gold. Other platforms, including Apple and Twitter, feature the same designs as their <a href="/fountain-pen/">🖋️&nbsp;Fountain Pen</a>, but with their tips angled to the lower right.

Black Nib

A black fountain pen with a silver <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nib_(pen)">nib</a>, as used for signing important documents. Often depicted with gold hardware. Positioned at a 45&deg; angle with its tip at the lower left. Like <a href="/black-nib/">✒️&nbsp;Black Nib</a>, commonly used for various content concerning writing, drawing, and signing (e.g., laws, deals, in sports).

Apple and Twitter&nbsp;feature the same designs as their <a href="/black-nib/">✒️&nbsp;Black Nib</a>, but with their tips angled to the lower left.

Lower Left Fountain Pen

A blue or black ballpoint pen, as used for everyday writing. Depicted with its cap removed onto its end or as retractable pen. Positioned at a 45&deg; angle, its tip at the lower left. Commonly used for various content concerning writing (e.g., creative, professional) as well as signing (deals, laws, in sports).

Google&#39;s design <a href="/google/android-7.0/pen/">previously featured</a> a brown-colored pen. Not to be confused with <a href="/black-nib/">✒️&nbsp;Black Nib</a> or <a href="/fountain-pen/">🖋️&nbsp;Fountain Pen</a>, though their applications often overlap.

Lower Left Ballpoint Pen

A crayon, as children use to color. Depicted as red on most platforms with two black stripes on its label, resembling a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crayola#Crayons">Crayola crayon</a>. Positioned at a 45&deg; angle, its tip at the lower left. Commonly used for various content concerning drawing, colors, arts and crafts, and schooling.

WhatsApp&rsquo;s crayon is green while Facebook&rsquo;s is orange.

Lower Left Crayon

A white piece of paper with text written on it by a yellow <a href="/pencil/">pencil</a>, positioned over the sheet, tip down, at a 45&deg; angle. Commonly used for content concerning various types of documents and writing, including signing (in sports).

WhatsApp and Facebook&rsquo;s designs depict an old-fashioned office <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorandum">memorandum</a> on pink paper. Apple&rsquo;s suggests an informal note with the easter egg of handwritten text from its 1997&ndash;2002 <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Think_different">Crazy Ones/Think Different</a> ad campaign: Here&rsquo;s to the crazy ones. Unicode 1.1 were pre-dated emoji inclusion in Unicode by 17 years, and included many characters primarily sourced from the Zapf Dingbats font.

The following characters were added to Unicode in 1993 and many were given emoji presentation status in the years 2010-2015.

Emojis displayed on iPhone, iPad,&nbsp;Mac, <a href="/apple-watch/">Apple Watch</a> and Apple TV use the&nbsp;Apple Color Emoji font installed on&nbsp;iOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS. Some Apple devices support&nbsp;<a href="/animoji/">Animoji</a>&nbsp;and <a href="/memoji/">Memoji</a>.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;<a href="/apple-logo/">&nbsp;Apple logo</a>&nbsp;is a&nbsp;Private Use Area&nbsp;(PUA) character that is not cross-platform compatible&nbsp;but does work on Apple devices. Previously the&nbsp;<a href="/beats-1-logo/"> Beats 1 logo</a>&nbsp;was also supported as a PUA.

In March 2024 <a href="/apple/ios-17.4">iOS 17.4</a> included new emojis from <a href="/emoji-15.1">Emoji 15.1.</a>

Released on 5 March 2024 for iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4, this was the first version of iOS to support the 118 new emojis in <a href="/emoji-15.1">Emoji 15.1</a>, including various direction-specific people emojis.

New emojis from Apple for 2022&nbsp;available as part of&nbsp;iOS 15.4, iPadOS 15.4, tvOS 15.4, watchOS 8.5, and macOS 12.3.

Released on 14&nbsp;March 2022, this was the first version of iOS to support the 112 new emojis in&nbsp;<a href="/emoji-14.0/">Emoji 14.0</a>, including various multiple skin tone versions of the <a href="/handshake/">🤝 Handshake</a> emoji.

This Apple emoji update changed the appearance of the <a href="/face-with-hand-over-mouth/">🤭&nbsp;Face with Hand Over Mouth</a>&nbsp;emoji to be more consistent with the designs of other vendors, with this emoji&#39;s originaly design being given to the new <a href="/emoji-14.0/">🫢 Face with Open Eyes and Hand Over Mouth</a>&nbsp;emoji.

iOS 15.4

Released on 2021-05-24, this update changed the appearance&nbsp;of the various&nbsp;<a href="/person-climbing/">🧗 Person Climbing</a> emojis to have the person wearing a safety helmet.

iOS 14.6

New emojis from Apple for 2021 available as part of&nbsp;iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, tvOS 14.5, watchOS 7.4, and macOS 11.3.

This Apple emoji update changed the appearance of the&nbsp;<a href="/syringe/">💉&nbsp;Syringe</a>&nbsp;emoji&nbsp;to remove the blood, and added mixed skin tone support to&nbsp;<a href="/kiss/">💏&nbsp;Kiss</a> and <a href="/couple-with-heart/">💑&nbsp;Couple with Heart</a>.

Released on 26&nbsp;April 2021, this was the first version of iOS to support the 217 new emojis in&nbsp;<a href="/emoji-13.1/">Emoji 13.1</a>. Taking into account <a href="/glossary/#non-rgi">non-RGI</a> emoji sequences, there&nbsp;there are 669 new emojis in this release.
