A school bag Emoji (also called a satchel) used by children attending school to carry books, lunch, and other personal belongings.

School Satchel

A crayon, as children use to color. Depicted as red on most platforms with two black stripes on its label, resembling a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crayola#Crayons">Crayola crayon</a>. Positioned at a 45&deg; angle, its tip at the lower left. Commonly used for various content concerning drawing, colors, arts and crafts, and schooling.

WhatsApp&rsquo;s crayon is green while Facebook&rsquo;s is orange.

Lower Left Crayon

A name badge, used to identify oneself in a location that others may not know your name, such as a <a href="/school/" title="🏫 School">school</a> trip, or a <a href="/briefcase/" title="💼 Briefcase">work</a> conference.

This&nbsp;<a href="/tulip/" title="🌷 Tulip">tulip</a>-shaped&nbsp;name badge is one of many designs commonly found&nbsp;at <a href="http://twins.bovaird.us/2015/04/japanese-kindergarten/">kindergartens</a> in Japan.

Name Badge

A classic yellow pencil. Depicted as a graphite pencil, like a U.S. #2 or European HB, with a sharpened tip and pink eraser. Positioned at a 45&deg; angle, with its tip at the lower left or right. Commonly used for various content concerning writing, drawing, and schooling.

Samsung&rsquo;s pencil was <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/pencil/">previously red</a>, Google&rsquo;s <a href="/google/android-7.0/pencil/">green</a>.

Pencil

A timepiece set in advance to startle a person awake at the designated time with its two bells. That is, before hitting snooze.&nbsp;Appearance varies across platforms, but depicted as a classic, wind-up, bedside alarm clock, often red in color.

May be used for various content concerning alarms, alerts, <a href="/person-in-bed/">sleeping</a>, waking, and time more generally.

Alarm Clock

A school building with multiple storeys, and a clock on the front. A place that children, or teenagers attend for their education.

Previoiusly displayed&nbsp;on <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/school/">Windows </a>as&nbsp;a collection of school-related items: an <a href="/red-apple/" title="🍎 Red Apple">apple</a>, <a href="/straight-ruler/" title="📏 Straight Ruler">ruler</a>, and <a href="/pencil/" title="✏ Pencil">pencil</a>.

School

A place to store notes and other office materials. Primarily used by older people.

Generally&nbsp;shown as a brown case with a handle on top, and a silver or gold colored clasp on the front. Facebook shows two leather straps on the front.

Briefcase

An icon representing the place where <a href="/luggage">luggage</a> can be collected from after the completion of a journey on the likes of an <a href="/airplane">airplane</a> or <a href="/ferry">ferry</a>.

Baggage Claim

A ruler, as used to draw straight lines and measure distances. Variously depicted as a metal, wood, or plastic straightedge with length markings at a 45&deg; angle.

Commonly used for content concerning schooling,&nbsp;building, and&nbsp;measurement&nbsp;in various disciplines. May also represent various concepts of straightness and size.

Straight Ruler

A triangle or set square, as used by engineers or architects to draw <a href="/straight-ruler/">straight lines</a> at angles. Variously depicted as a metal, wood, or plastic right triangle with length markings, its hypotenuse to the right.

Commonly applied to a range of disciplines, including art, design, building, architecture, and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). May also represent various concepts of angles and measurement.

Triangular Ruler

A pair of scissors, as used to cut paper or <a href="/person-getting-haircut/">hair</a>. Generally shown open, blades down, with red handles. Commonly used for content concerning haircuts, fashion design, arts and crafts, and various senses of cutting.

WhatsApp&rsquo;s design features green handles with blades pointed up.

Black Scissors

A common green apple, tarter counterpart to the&nbsp;<a href="/red-apple/">Red Apple</a>.&nbsp;Displayed with a stem and single, green leaf on major platforms.

Green Apple

Two colorful shopping bags, as contain&nbsp;consumer items bought at a <a href="/department-store/">department store</a>. Depicted as gift bags in various bright colors, patterns, sizes, and positions across platforms. Apple&#39;s design, for instance, features a pink bag with light-pink dots in front of a gold bag with yellow stripes.

Commonly used for various content concerning retail shopping, stores, goods, and <a href="/wrapped-gift/">gifts or presents</a>. May also convey a sense of indulgence or self-care, &agrave; la retail therapy.

Microsoft&rsquo;s design <a href="/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/shopping-bags/">previously</a> included&nbsp;tissue paper, and was depicted as&nbsp;a <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/shopping-bags/">bag of groceries</a> prior to that.

Shopping Bags

A bag or purse, used to carry personal items, often doubling as a fashion accessory.

The design of this emoji varies, with most platforms opting for leather-looking styles in brown or orange. Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/handbag/">used to be pink</a>, but is now light brown. Twitter&rsquo;s purple design stands out among the other platforms.

Not to be confused with the smaller and handleless pouch emoji sometimes referred to as <a href="/clutch-bag/">👝 Clutch Bag</a>.

Handbag

Red Apple

A spiral-bound, yellow, hardcover notebook. Intended to depict a financial ledger, as used in accounting.

Commonly used for various content concerning writing, drawing, reading, and schooling. May also be used as a yellow accent color.

<a href="/google/android-7.0/ledger/">Google</a> and <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/ledger/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> designs were previously blue.

Ledger

A small pouch with a clasp, generally used to hold coins. Sometimes called a &ldquo;coin purse.&rdquo;

Color varies by platform, though most platforms have a pink, blue, or turquoise bag with a silver or gold (gray or yellow) clasp.

Not to be confused with <a href="/clutch-bag/">👝 Clutch Bag</a>, which can look like a coin person on some platforms, due to lack of relative scale in emoji designs.

Using black and white emoji&nbsp;characters&nbsp;<a href="/au-kddi/type-a-2/">from 1999</a>, this set <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-1/">gained animation in the early 2000s</a>&nbsp;before moving to static, <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-3/">high resolution designs</a>.

In 2012, au&nbsp;replaced its custom designs with <a href="/au-kddi/type-f/">a new set</a> heavily inspired by, and designed to be compatible with, emojis from NTT Docomo.
