Loudly Crying Face

A yellow face with a frown and closed, downcast eyes, as if aching with sorrow or pain. May convey a variety of unhappy emotions, including disappointment, grief, stress, regret, and remorse.

Similar to <a href="/pensive-face/">😔&nbsp;Pensive Face</a>, but with a sadder, more hurt expression. Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/disappointed-face/">previously featured</a> an expression closer to <a href="/confused-face/">😕&nbsp;Confused Face</a>.

Disappointed Face

A yellow face with soft, closed eyes, raised eyebrows, and a slight smile. Facebook&rsquo;s design features a slightly open mouth, as if&nbsp;sighing.

Conveys various pleasant feelings, including&nbsp;contentment, calm, peace, and&nbsp;relief. May also convey feelings of happiness or good-natured humor more generally.

<a href="/google/android-7.0/relieved-face/">Google</a> and <a href="/microsoft/windows-8.1/relieved-face/">Microsoft</a> previously included sweat beads. Not to be confused with <a href="/pensive-face/">😔&nbsp;Pensive Face</a>, which has similarly shaped eyes but in a sadder expression.

Relieved Face

A classic sad face. A yellow face with&nbsp;simple, open eyes and wide, steep frown. May convey such feelings as moderate concern or disappointment and affectionate sadness, as when missing a loved one. Its sentiment is usually more intense than <a href="/slightly-frowning-face/">🙁&nbsp;Slightly Frowning Face</a>, which has a smaller frown.

This smiley predates Unicode emoji support. In its Unicode name of White Frowning Face, white&nbsp;does not refer to skin tone or ethnicity, although&nbsp;Samsung&rsquo;s <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.0/frowning-face/">early designs</a>&nbsp;colored the face white.&nbsp;See the glossary for the&nbsp;term&nbsp;<a href="/glossary/#white" title="📖 Glossary">white</a>&nbsp;in Unicode character names.

White Frowning Face

A yellow face with furrowed eyebrows, a small frown, and large, &ldquo;puppy dog&rdquo; eyes, as if begging, pleading, or yearning (possibly even in a&nbsp;<a href="/nsfw">NSFW</a> manner, depending on the context). May also represent adoration or feeling touched&nbsp;by a loving gesture.

Huawei&#39;s design for this emoji includes a pair of&nbsp;<a href="/folded-hands">🙏 Folded Hands</a>.

At its peak the Pleading Face was&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/a-new-king-pleading-face/">the&nbsp;third most popular emoji used on Twitter</a>, and was the most commonly found emoji <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/what-every-heart-emoji-really-means/">in tweets that include hearts</a>. Used in sequence with pointing hands to indicate a bashful or shy pose (🥺👉👈)&nbsp;<a href="/tiktok/">particularly on TikTok</a>.

Face with Pleading Eyes

A yellow face with raised eyebrows, enlarged eyes, slight frown, and long nose,&nbsp;indicating&nbsp;it&rsquo;s telling a lie in the manner of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinocchio">Pinocchio</a>. Like that character, Facebook&#39;s design features a wooden nose.&nbsp;

May represent lying, a liar, and other concepts of deceit and dishonesty to varying degrees of intensity. Sometimes used to convey disbelief (e.g., You must be kidding) or feeling abashed (e.g., as if&nbsp;caught in the act of lying).

Lying Face

A yellow face with small, open eyes, raised eyebrows, and a small,&nbsp;open mouth, as if it has been hushed by concern or correction. Meaning widely varies, but its expression is commonly taken as surprise, embarrassment, or mild&nbsp;excitement.

Similar to <a href="/astonished-face/">😲&nbsp;Astonished Face</a>, which features larger eyes and mouth.&nbsp;Google <a href="/google/android-5.0/hushed-face/">previously interpreted</a> hushed as &quot;silenced,&quot;&nbsp;depicting&nbsp;the emoji with a <a href="/zipper-mouth-face/">zipper mouth</a> until <a href="/google/android-6.0.1/">Android 6.0.1</a>. A face with open eyes and a small, open frown. Its eyebrows are furrowed, with a single bead of cold sweat dripping down, and its forehead is pale blue, as if experiencing a <a href="/cold-face/">cold</a> flash. Samsung&#39;s design shows upper teeth and tongue.

Meaning widely varies, but commonly conveys such feelings as sadness, disappointment, fear, and anxiety. Similar to <a href="/sad-but-relieved-face/">😥&nbsp;Sad but Relieved Face</a>, but with a blue head and larger frown.

Using black and white emoji&nbsp;characters&nbsp;<a href="/au-kddi/type-a-2/">from 1999</a>, this set <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-1/">gained animation in the early 2000s</a>&nbsp;before moving to static, <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-3/">high resolution designs</a>.

In 2012, au&nbsp;replaced its custom designs with <a href="/au-kddi/type-f/">a new set</a> heavily inspired by, and designed to be compatible with, emojis from NTT Docomo.

First available in May 2012, this emoji set is the first from au by KDDI to unify designs to largely mimic the set from NTT Docomo,&nbsp;providing&nbsp;greater cross-platform consistency. Type F

A higher resolution version of au&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="/au-kddi/type-d-1/">Type D-2</a>&nbsp;emoji set, but without animation. This emoji set was the last revision from au which featured designs unique to the company. Available as early as 2003, this set was in common use from 2005&mdash;2012 on au devices.

The <a href="/au-kddi/type-f/">following release</a> unified designs to more closely match those from NTT Docomo.

Type D-3

A higher resolution version of au&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="/au-kddi/type-d-1/">Type D-1</a>&nbsp;emoji set available on higher end devices at the time. Replaced by <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-3/">Type D-3</a>, which uses the same designs but without animation, and at a higher resolution.

Type D-2

A complete redesign which followed <a href="/au-kddi/type-c-2/">Type C-2</a> from au. Animated, relatively low resolution pixel art. <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-2/">Type D-2</a>&nbsp;features the same range and designs, at a higher resolution. First available from August 2001, but in common use in 2003. Used on older devices than the Type D-2 set.

Some changes from the previous release <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20031010032355/http://au.kddi.com:80/email/au_dakara/emoji/">were noted on the KDDI website</a>.

Type D-1

The same set of characters as available in <a href="/au-kddi/type-b-2/">Type B-2</a>&nbsp;with similar designs that included additional shading and detail.&nbsp;Available from August 2000, and&nbsp;commonly seen on au devices in&nbsp;2001-2002. This character set was supported <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20071009235732/http://developer.openwave.com:80/documentation/xhtml_mp_css_reference/icons.html#674480">in the OpenWave Mobile Browser 6.2</a> on au devices.

Replaced in 2002 by <a href="/au-kddi/type-c-2/">Type C-2</a>, which used entirely different designs.
