New Caledonia is an overseas territory of France, and before 2010 the French flag was the sole emblem representing the territory. However, in July 2010, the New Caledonian Congress supported flying the Kanak people's flag of the FLNKS independence movement alongside the French flag. It is this Kanak flag design that all emoji vendors use for the New Caledonia emoji flag sequence.
