Tintenfisch

An octopus, a sea animal with eight legs, known to change color and release&nbsp;ink. Generally depicted as a pink or orange octopus facing forward, with a large, round head, prominent eyes, and its tentacle-like arms raised at its sides. Platforms vary in the number of arms shown, ranging from four to the full eight, with several designs featuring suckers on them.

Not to be confused with <a href="/de/tintenfisch/">🦑 Squid</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Twitter&rsquo;s octopus is purple. Apple&rsquo;s has a friendly, cartoon-styled appearance. <a href="/de/google/android-7.0/oktopus/">Google</a> and <a href="/de/samsung/experience-9.0/oktopus/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> octopuses previously looked surprised, while <a href="/de/microsoft/windows-10/oktopus/">Microsoft&#39;s</a>&nbsp;suggested an <a href="/de/computerspiel-monster/">👾 Alien Monster</a>.

Oktopus

A lobster, a large crustacean with a prominent tail and pincers. Depicted as a reddish-orange lobster (as cooked) from above, with a long body and tail, short, tentacle-like eyes, and ten legs, the top of which are very large pincers.

Often used to represent lobster as food as well as in connection to the US state of Maine.

In its release year of 2018, Emojipedia&rsquo;s original sample image was criticized as anatomically incorrect but was shortly after <a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/skateboard-dna-and-lobster-updated/">resolved</a>. That year, the transgender community <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/trans-activists-lobster-emoji-flag-charlie-craggs-unicode-nail-it-a8474476.html">embraced</a> the lobster as a symbol for their efforts for <a href="/de/transgender-flagge/">Transgender Flag</a>&nbsp;emoji.

Samsung, WhatsApp, and Facebook&rsquo;s lobsters are depicted at an angle.

Hummer

A snail, a slow-moving, snail-like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mollusca">mollusk</a> in a spiraling <a href="/de/schneckenhaus/">shell</a>. Generally depicted as a brown snail in full profile facing left or right, with a brown, textured shell and tentacle-like eyes.

May be used to represent a slug and&nbsp;various senses of slow.

Twitter&rsquo;s snail has a purple body and yellow shell. Microsoft&rsquo;s snail <a href="/de/microsoft/windows-10/schnecke/">previously</a> had a green body.

Schnecke

A whale, the massive marine mammal. Generally depicted as a light-blue whale in full profile facing left, with its tail curving down towards is huge mouth. Shown with a white, textured underside, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humpback_whale">humpback</a> or&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_whale">blue whale</a>.

Not to be confused with the more cartoon-styled <a href="/de/blasender-wal/">🐳 Spouting Whale</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Apple and Google&#39;s whales have slightly open mouths, revealing <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baleen">baleen</a>.

A shark, a large, stealthy fish with many teeth. Generally depicted as a gray shark in full profile facing left, as a&nbsp;<a href="/de/delfin/">tiger</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bull_shark">bull</a>, or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_white_shark">great white shark</a> hunting in the water. Shown with a white underside and three gills, its pointed nose and teeth-lined mouth curving down to a sharp dorsal fin and long, pointed tail.

Called <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fugu">fugu</a> in Japan, where it&rsquo;s consumed as a delicacy.

Garnele

A friendly-looking, tentacled space creature with two eyes. Most major platforms style their design after aliens in classic arcade games like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Invaders">Space Invaders</a>, rendering it purple and pixellated, as if in 8-bit graphics.

Samsung&rsquo;s design resembles an <a href="/de/oktopus/">octopus</a> and <a href="/de/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/computerspiel-monster/">previously featured</a> a big-brained <a href="/de/au%C3%9Ferirdischer/">alien</a>, &agrave; la <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cage_(Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series)">Star Trek</a>. Earlier designs from <a href="/de/google/android-7.0/computerspiel-monster/">Google</a> and <a href="/de/microsoft/windows-10/computerspiel-monster/">Microsoft</a> depicted more cartoon-like alien monsters.

May be used of topics concerning extraterrestrial life,&nbsp;outer space, gaming, and computing, but also enjoys a range of idiosyncratic applications, such as&nbsp;conveying a&nbsp;sense of weirdness, wackiness, or excitement, given that the emoji looks like it is raising its arms shouting&nbsp;Yay! on many platforms.

Computerspiel-Monster

A spider, an eight-legged <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachnid">arachnid</a> that spins a web. Depicted as a common black spider, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_house_spider">house&nbsp;spider</a>&nbsp;or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_funnel-web_spider">funnel-web spider</a>, often shown from above with its large abdomen oriented at the bottom.

A flat, shallow, black pan with side handles, containing saffron-colored&nbsp;<a href="/de/reis-in-sch%C3%BCssel/">rice</a>, vegetables, a leg of&nbsp;<a href="/de/h%C3%A4hnchenschenkel/">poultry</a>, and/or&nbsp;<a href="/de/frittierte-garnele/">shrimp&nbsp;</a>and&nbsp;<a href="/de/spiegelei-in-bratpfanne/">lemon&nbsp;</a>slices. Commonly associated with&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paella">paella</a>, a traditional dish from&nbsp;<a href="/de/flagge-spanien/" title="🇪🇸 Flag for Spain">Spain</a>. May be used for eating,&nbsp;<a href="/de/spiegelei-in-bratpfanne/">cooking</a>, dining, and meals more generally.

Apple&#39;s version of this emoji is considered to be <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/apple-fixes-paella-emoji/">representative</a> of the traditional ingredients&nbsp;from Valencia. Samsung <a href="/de/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/pfannengericht/">previously displayed</a> this emoji as a Korean hot pot.

Pfannengericht

A scorpion, an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachnid">arachnid</a> with <a href="/de/hummer/">lobster</a>-like pincers and a stinging tail. Depicted as a light-brown scorpion from above, often facing left, with its pincers and curving stinger raised. Shown with six or, accurately, eight legs in addition to its pincers.

The Unicode Consortium accepted the following emoji 72 emojis&nbsp;for Unicode 9.0. This update&nbsp;was released&nbsp;on June 21, 2016. Most vendors added support for this update within the 2016 calendar year.&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/unicode-9-0-released-with-72-new-emojis/">Sample images and more about Unicode 9.0</a>.

<a href="/de/emoji-4.0/">Emoji 4.0</a> was published in late 2016, which added additional emoji professions.

<h2>New in Unicode 9</h2>

Google emoji images are used on most Android devices, Gmail Web Interface, Google Meet, and ChromeOS. These are provided as part of the&nbsp;<a href="https://github.com/googlei18n/noto-emoji">Noto Emoji</a> project. These images are also used for&nbsp;<a href="/de/slack/">Slack</a> on non-Apple platforms including Windows, Linux, and Android.

Gboard also includes an emoji mashup feature known as&nbsp;Emoji Kitchen which allows two emojis to be combined into a sticker. Thousands of combinations are available, using Gboard for Android and Google search.

The Google Noto Color Emoji set is used as the default emoji set on mobile devices manufactured by the likes of&nbsp;Xiaomi,&nbsp;Oppo,&nbsp;Huawei, Sony,&nbsp;and of course Google.

There are also two additional Noto Emoji variants: the&nbsp;minimalist <a href="https://emojipedia.org/de/noto-emoji/">Noto Emoji font</a>, and an <a href="https://emojipedia.org/de/animated-noto-color-emoji/">animated subset of Noto Color Emoji</a> designs used by the Messages by Google mobile app.

This update to Google&#39;s Noto Color Emoji set introduced support for 2023&#39;s <a href="/de/emoji-15.1">Emoji 15.1</a> recommendations.

First made available via Github on 2023-11-17, this update was released progressively across different Google platforms such as Chrome OS, Gmail, YouTube, and various Android devices.

First released as a&nbsp;color vector&nbsp;font file on 2022-09-14, this update to Google&#39;s Noto Color Emoji set introduced support for <a href="https://emojipedia.org/emoji-15.0/">Emoji 15.0</a> emoji such as <a href="https://emojipedia.org/shaking-face/">Shaking Face</a> and&nbsp;<a href="https://emojipedia.org/pink-heart/">Pink Heart</a>.

This update also included minor revisions to select emoji designs,&nbsp;including all of the hand gestures.

First made available via as a&nbsp;Developer Preview on&nbsp;2021-10-27, Android 12L was&nbsp;the first vendor update to&nbsp;include support for 2021&rsquo;s <a href="/de/emoji-14.0/">Emoji 14.0</a> recommendations. Devices running Android 12&nbsp;also began to receive this emoji update via subsequent security updates.&nbsp;
