A yellow face with a slight frown, furrowed eyebrows, and scrunched eyes, as if holding back tears or exerting great effort. May convey various degrees and tones of frustration, sadness, helplessness, and struggle. Facebook&rsquo;s design features a light-purple forehead.

Persevering Face

A yellow face with scrunched, X-shaped eyes, furrowed eyebrows, and a broad, open frown, as if yawning in exhaustion or groaning in exasperation. Usually shown with upper teeth and sometimes tongue.

Hushed Face

An angry-red face with a black bar and white <a href="https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/grawlix-symbols-swearing-comic-strips">grawlixes</a> covering its mouth, indicating it&#39;s swearing or being vulgar. Grawlixes are typographical symbols (e.g.,&nbsp;@#$%&amp;!) representing swear words or obscenities. Often used to convey an outburst of anger, frustration, or rage.

Most platforms feature the same eyes as on their <a href="/angry-face/">😠 Angry Face</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="/pouting-face">😡 Enraged Face</a>.

Serious Face with Symbols Covering Mouth

Loudly Crying Face

A cartoon cat variant of <a href="/weary-face/">😩 Weary Face</a>. Its expression more closely resembles <a href="/face-screaming-in-fear/">😱 Face Screaming in Fear</a>.&nbsp;Depicted as yellow on major platforms.

Weary Cat Face

A yellow face with a frowning mouth and eyes and eyebrows scrunched downward in anger.

Conveys varying&nbsp;degrees of anger, from grumpiness and irritation to disgust and outrage. May also represent someone acting tough or being mean.

Its sentiment is usually more intense than <a href="/slightly-frowning-face/">🙁&nbsp;Slightly Frowning Face</a>, which has a smaller frown.

This smiley predates Unicode emoji support. Meaning widely varies, but commonly conveys such feelings as sadness, disappointment, fear, and anxiety. Similar to <a href="/sad-but-relieved-face/">😥&nbsp;Sad but Relieved Face</a>, but with a blue head and larger frown.

Face with Open Mouth and Cold Sweat

A yellow face with scrunched, X-shaped eyes and a crumpled mouth, as if quivering in frustration or holding back tears. May be used to represent being overcome with various emotions, including irritation, frustration, disgust, and sadness,&nbsp;as if to the point of defeat.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Microsoft and Twitter&rsquo;s designs feature&nbsp;eyebrows, Facebook&rsquo;s a purple forehead.

Vendor designs have noticeably evolved over time. <a href="/apple/ios-6.0/confounded-face/">Apple</a> and <a href="/google/android-8.0/confounded-face/">Google&rsquo;s</a> designs previously included eyebrows. Confounded Face

An emoji showing the fingers held together in a vertical orientation, often referred to as the Italian hand gesture ma che vuoi, sometimes called the &quot;finger purse.&quot;&nbsp;In Italy this gesture tends to be used in disagreement, frustration, or disbelief and can mean &ldquo;What do you want?&rdquo; or &ldquo;What are you saying?&rdquo; Outside Italy anyone performing a caricature of an Italian person, regardless of context or tone, might use this gesture.

Pinched Fingers has a variety of other culturally specific uses. In Israeli culture it can mean &ldquo;hold on,&rdquo; &ldquo;relax,&rdquo; or &ldquo;be patient.&rdquo; The K-Pop star <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwon_Yu-ri">Yuri</a> uses it as a signature gesture to represent a <a href="/dumpling/">dumpling</a> and a general warm sentiment. The final original emoji set from NTT Docomo. Initially installed&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/service/docomo_mail/appli/deco/pictograph/index.html">on carrier handsets running&nbsp;Android 4.3 and 4.4</a>&nbsp;and later discontinued&nbsp;and replaced with <a href="/google/">standard Google emoji designs</a> on&nbsp;phones from NTT Docomo in Japan.

The first emoji set from Japanese carrier Docomo (styled NTT DoCoMo in 1999). One of the most successful early emoji sets due to its use on multiple devices. Designed by Japanese interface designer <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shigetaka_Kurita">Shigetaka Kurita</a>, these minimalistic graphics were used on multiple devices, and evolved to <a href="/docomo/2013/">a vector graphic implementaiton in 2013</a>.

Commonly cited as the first emoji set, it is more accurate to deem this one of the first emoji sets. An emoji implementation from competing Japanese carrier <a href="/softbank/1997/">Softbank predated this set with a 1997 emoji release</a>.

Note: Each&nbsp;emoji has been mapped to its modern Unicode codepoint, despite this set existing prior to Unicode emoji standardization.
