Android 6.0.1 was the first emoji release from Google to support <a href="/it/unicode-7.0/">Unicode 7.0</a>, <a href="/it/unicode-8.0/">Unicode 8.0</a>, and <a href="/it/zero-width-joiner/">ZWJ Sequences</a> for families and couples.

Android 5.0 emojis were the first major revision to Google&#39;s emoji font after the introduction of color in <a href="/it/google/android-4.4/">Android 4.4</a>.

The primary changes in this update are to the appearance of human emojis (changed from white to yellow), and the addition of <a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/209-new-emoji-flags-available-today/">209 emoji flags</a>.

Android 5.0

Android 4.4 was the first release from Google to include support for color emoji designs&nbsp;and introduced a new bloblike gumdrop character which is used for various gestures and smileys.

This set of emojis was created by Google and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ic4design.com/top/google_emoji.html">IC4 Design</a>&nbsp;and first shown <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2013/05/15/google-hangouts-messaging-app/">at Google I/O</a> on May 15, 2013.

Android 4.4

The first version of Android with native emoji support was Android 4.1. Many emojis at this timed&nbsp;feature the Android alien, which made emotions difficult to discern at small sizes. The last release to feature this black and white emoji set was Android 4.3.

Color emoji support was added in&nbsp;<a href="/it/google/android-4.4/">Android 4.4</a>.

These unique designs&nbsp;were implemented following Gmail&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="http://japan.googleblog.com/2008/02/gmail.html">initial emoji support</a> in&nbsp;Japan, which used images from <a href="/it/au-kddi/">au by KDDI</a>.

66 of the 79 emojis in this set <a href="https://android.googlesource.com/platform/external/skia/+/donut-release2/emoji/gmojiraw.txt">map&nbsp;directly</a> to the first emoji code points added to&nbsp;<a href="/it/unicode-6.0/">Unicode 6.0</a>.&nbsp;The remaining 13 emojis were added to Unicode in subsequent years.

Implemented using Private Use Area code points, these have been mapped to their modern Unicode code points for display here.
