Generally depicted as a pink or orange octopus facing forward, with a large, round head, prominent eyes, and its tentacle-like arms raised at its sides. Twitter&rsquo;s octopus is purple. Apple&rsquo;s has a friendly, cartoon-styled appearance. <a href="/nl/google/android-7.0/octopus/">Google</a> and <a href="/nl/samsung/experience-9.0/octopus/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> octopuses previously looked surprised, while <a href="/nl/microsoft/windows-10/octopus/">Microsoft&#39;s</a>&nbsp;suggested an <a href="/nl/buitenaards-monster/">👾 Alien Monster</a>.

Octopus

A friendly-looking, tentacled space creature with two eyes. Most major platforms style their design after aliens in classic arcade games like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Invaders">Space Invaders</a>, rendering it purple and pixellated, as if in 8-bit graphics.

Samsung&rsquo;s design resembles an <a href="/nl/octopus/">octopus</a> and <a href="/nl/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/buitenaards-monster/">previously featured</a> a big-brained <a href="/nl/buitenaards-wezen/">alien</a>, &agrave; la <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cage_(Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series)">Star Trek</a>. Earlier designs from <a href="/nl/google/android-7.0/buitenaards-monster/">Google</a> and <a href="/nl/microsoft/windows-10/buitenaards-monster/">Microsoft</a> depicted more cartoon-like alien monsters.

May be used of topics concerning extraterrestrial life,&nbsp;outer space, gaming, and computing, but also enjoys a range of idiosyncratic applications, such as&nbsp;conveying a&nbsp;sense of weirdness, wackiness, or excitement, given that the emoji looks like it is raising its arms shouting&nbsp;Yay! on many platforms.

Buitenaards Monster

A friendly, cartoon-styled whale, shown spouting water from its blowhole. Generally depicted as a light-blue whale in full profile facing left, with a round body and white underside, its tail held upright.

Often used with an affectionate tone. Not to be confused with the more lifelike <a href="/nl/walvis/">🐋 Whale</a>, though their applications may overlap.

WhatsApp&rsquo;s whale is gray, as <a href="/nl/microsoft/windows-10/spuitende-walvis/">Microsoft</a> and <a href="/nl/facebook/1.0/spuitende-walvis/">Facebook&rsquo;s</a> whales previously were. <a href="/nl/twitter/twemoji-1.0/spuitende-walvis/">Twitter&rsquo;s</a> whale was previously purple.

Spuitende Walvis

A whale, the massive marine mammal. Generally depicted as a light-blue whale in full profile facing left, with its tail curving down towards is huge mouth. Shown with a white, textured underside, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Humpback_whale">humpback</a> or&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_whale">blue whale</a>.

Not to be confused with the more cartoon-styled <a href="/nl/spuitende-walvis/">🐳 Spouting Whale</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Apple and Google&#39;s whales have slightly open mouths, revealing <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baleen">baleen</a>.

Walvis

A dolphin, a sleek marine mammal known to be social and intelligent. Generally depicted as a light-blue dolphin with a white belly in full profile facing left, its short snout curving down to a prominent dorsal fin and tail, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bottlenose_dolphin">bottlenose</a> dolphin leaping in the air.

May be used for various content concerning <a href="/nl/zwemmende-persoon/">swimming</a>, oceans, <a href="/nl/strand-met-parasol/">beaches</a>, and summer fun. Not be confused with <a href="/nl/haai/">🦈 Shark</a>.

WhatsApp and Facebook&rsquo;s dolphins are gray, as <a href="/nl/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/dolfijn/">Microsoft</a> and <a href="/nl/samsung/experience-9.0/dolfijn/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> previously were.

Dolfijn

A common fish, as swims in the water. Depicted as a generic, light-blue fish, often with a white underside, in full profile facing left, with fins and prominent gill cover.

May be used to represent a variety of other fish (freshwater or saltwater), <a href="/nl/vishengel/">fishing</a>, metaphorical senses of fish, and fish as food, as consumed in the form of <a href="/nl/sushi/">🍣 Sushi</a>. May be used to represent <a href="/nl/vissen-sterrenbeeld/">♓ Pisces</a>, the Fish, in the Western zodiac.

A tropical fish, as swims in the warm waters of a coral reef or is kept as a pet in an aquarium. Depicted as a brightly colored fish in full profile facing left, with slender fins. Often shown as a blue-and-yellow fish with stripes, as an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pterophyllum">angelfish</a>.

<a href="/nl/google/android-7.0/tropische-vis/">Google</a> and <a href="/nl/facebook/1.0/tropische-vis/">Facebook&rsquo;s</a> fish previously resembled a goldfish, while&nbsp;<a href="/nl/samsung/experience-9.0/tropische-vis/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a>&nbsp;was black and white.&nbsp;Microsoft&rsquo;s fish was previously&nbsp;<a href="/nl/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/tropische-vis/">orange with white stripes</a>, and&nbsp;<a href="/nl/microsoft/windows-10/tropische-vis/">yellow and blue</a> before that.

Tropische Vis

A blowfish (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetraodontidae">puffer</a>), which puffs up and becomes spiky when alarmed. Depicted as an orange or brown blowfish in full profile facing left, with small fins, a white underside, and a round, spiky body, as if inflated.

Called <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fugu">fugu</a> in Japan, where it&rsquo;s consumed as a delicacy.

Kogelvis

A shark, a large, stealthy fish with many teeth. Generally depicted as a gray shark in full profile facing left, as a&nbsp;<a href="/nl/dolfijn/">tiger</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bull_shark">bull</a>, or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_white_shark">great white shark</a> hunting in the water. Shown with a white underside and three gills, its pointed nose and teeth-lined mouth curving down to a sharp dorsal fin and long, pointed tail.

Haai

A snail, a slow-moving, snail-like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mollusca">mollusk</a> in a spiraling <a href="/nl/schelp/">shell</a>. Generally depicted as a brown snail in full profile facing left or right, with a brown, textured shell and tentacle-like eyes.

May be used to represent a slug and&nbsp;various senses of slow.

Twitter&rsquo;s snail has a purple body and yellow shell. Microsoft&rsquo;s snail <a href="/nl/microsoft/windows-10/slak/">previously</a> had a green body.

Slak

A crab, a squat crustacean with pincers. Depicted as a reddish-orange crab (as cooked) shown from above, with a round, shelled body, shorted, tentacle-like eyes, and ten legs, the top two of which are large pincers.

May be used to represent crab as food or metaphorical senses of crab (e.g., crabby). Often used to represent <a href="/nl/kreeft-sterrenbeeld/">♋ Cancer</a>, the Crab, in the Western zodiac.

Not to be confused with <a href="/nl/kreeft/">🦞 Lobster</a>.

Facebook&rsquo;s pincers have black tips, as do&nbsp;Huawei&#39;s.

Krab

A lobster, a large crustacean with a prominent tail and pincers. Depicted as a reddish-orange lobster (as cooked) from above, with a long body and tail, short, tentacle-like eyes, and ten legs, the top of which are very large pincers.

Often used to represent lobster as food as well as in connection to the US state of Maine.

In its release year of 2018, Emojipedia&rsquo;s original sample image was criticized as anatomically incorrect but was shortly after <a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/skateboard-dna-and-lobster-updated/">resolved</a>. That year, the transgender community <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/trans-activists-lobster-emoji-flag-charlie-craggs-unicode-nail-it-a8474476.html">embraced</a> the lobster as a symbol for their efforts for <a href="/nl/transgendervlag/">Transgender Flag</a>&nbsp;emoji.

Samsung, WhatsApp, and Facebook&rsquo;s lobsters are depicted at an angle.

Kreeft

A shrimp (prawn), a small crustacean with a long tail. Generally depicted as a reddish-orange shrimp (as cooked) in full profile facing left, with tiny eyes, many limbs, and its long antennae curling back as its long tail curls in.

May be consumed in the form of <a href="/nl/gefrituurde-garnaal/">🍤 Fried Shrimp</a> or <a href="/nl/paellapan/">🥘 Shallow Pan of Food</a>. Often used to represent seafood.

The antennae of Apple&rsquo;s shrimp curls under its body. The body of Facebook&rsquo;s shrimp is straight. <a href="/nl/google/android-7.0/garnaal/">Google</a> and <a href="/nl/samsung/experience-9.0/garnaal/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> shrimp previously faced right.

Garnaal

A squid, an octopus-like sea animal with ten arms. Generally depicted as a pinkish-orange <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_squid">giant squid</a>, facing forward or angled to the left, with a slender, arrow-like body, small eyes, and two, long arms raised up at its sides. Platforms generally depict six arms.

Occasionally used to represent squid as a food item. Not to be confused with <a href="/nl/octopus/">🐙 Octopus</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Microsoft, WhatsApp&nbsp;and Twitter&rsquo;s squid designs&nbsp;are facing forward, as was a previous <a href="/nl/google/android-8.0/inktvis/">Google</a>&nbsp;design. Samsung&rsquo;s squid was <a href="/nl/samsung/experience-9.0/inktvis/">previously</a> gray.

Inktvis

A wave of water, as breaks at the beach. Depicted as a blue wave with a foamy, white crest, curling to the right.

May be used to represent water in general, various bodies of water like oceans, and water activities, such as&nbsp;<a href="/nl/zwemmende-persoon/">swimming</a>, <a href="/nl/surfer/">surfing</a>, and <a href="/nl/zeilboot/">sailing</a>. May also&nbsp;be used to represent metaphorical waves.

Apple&rsquo;s design resembles the iconic wave in&nbsp;Japanese artist Hokusai&rsquo;s famous woodblock print, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Wave_off_Kanagawa">The Great Wave off Kanagawa</a>&nbsp;(ca. 1830).

Golf

A diving mask with a snorkel,&nbsp;used for scuba diving or other underwater activities. Colors vary across platforms.

<a href="/nl/oogscherm/">🥽 Goggles</a> is similar in design, but used primarily to represent safety goggles rather than swimming goggles.

Released in&nbsp;October&nbsp;2010, Unicode 6.0 was the first version of the <a href="/nl/the-unicode-consortium">Unicode Standard</a> to support emoji.

Some characters in <a href="/nl/unicode-5.2/">prior</a>&nbsp;versions of Unicode were retroactively updated to provide&nbsp;an emoji presentation. This release was the first to introduce new characters for the sole purpose of compatability with emojis being used in Japan.

Samsung devices use <a href="https://news.samsung.com/global/samsungs-emoji-suite-makes-for-a-more-emotional-digital-world">their own emoji designs</a>&nbsp;which are different to those used on other <a href="/nl/google/">Android devices</a>. These&nbsp;glossy emojis&nbsp;appear on devices such as the Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note series and are updated as part of the Samsung One UI interface layer (previously Samsung Experience, before that Samsung TouchWiz)&nbsp;which runs on top of Android.

Note that Samsung users may see select emojis display as their <a href="/nl/google/">Google</a>&nbsp;set design. This is due to <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/faster-emoji-updates-on-the-way-for-android-apps/">Android AppCompat</a>, which will display a Google emoji design within an app or web platform&nbsp;when a Samsung device has not yet been updated to support that particular emoji.

Since the introduction of Samsung&#39;s emoji set in 2014, various Unicode characters that have not been recommended to have emoji presentation have nevertheless been given a colorful emoji design on Samsung platforms.
