Computermuis

A <a href="/nl/desktop/">computer</a> printer, as at a home office. Generally depicted as a grayish device with a power button and paper loaded in its tray, sometimes printing out a document. May be used for various content concerning printing, including as a Print icon,&nbsp;as well as for office work and technology more generally.

Not to be confused with <a href="/nl/fax/">📠 Fax Machine</a>.

Printer

A video game emoji,&nbsp;shown on major platforms as a console&nbsp;gamepad with <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-pad">D-pad</a>, <a href="/nl/joystick/" title="🕹 Joystick">joysticks</a>, and buttons.

Videogame

A trackball, as rotated to control a cursor on a computer. An alternative or supplement to a <a href="/nl/computermuis/">computer mouse</a> or touchpad. Generally depicted as a cordless device with a blue or red ball in a cylindrical, black or gray socket.

Occasionally used for various content concerning <a href="/nl/videogame/">gaming</a>. Facebook&rsquo;s design featurs a rectangular base, while Google&rsquo;s design <a href="/nl/google/android-11.0/trackball/">previously</a> featured&nbsp;a cord.

Trackball

An electric plug, as inserted into socket to power a device. Depicted as a black, two-pronged plug at various angles at the end of a cable. Prongs are silver or gold.

Commonly used for various literal and figurative content concerning electricity and power. May also be used for various slang senses of plug, e.g., a connection or hookup.

Apple and WhatsApp&rsquo;s designs suggest a plug used in North America and Japan while other platforms, including Google and Samsung, suggest one used in Europe and many other parts of the world.

Stekker

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3.5_floppy">3.5-inch floppy disk</a>, a data storage format popular in the 1980&ndash;90s but largely preserved as a Save icon in computer programs. Shown with its silver shutter positioned up and in a black housing with&nbsp;a white label, accented with blue or red.

Occasionally used for various content concerning computers, including nostalgia for old technology, as well as to represent electronic saving.

Floppydisk

A keyboard, as used to type on a <a href="/nl/desktop/">computer</a>. Generally depicted as a gray device with white or black keys. Used for various content concerning computers, typing, and writing.

Apple&rsquo;s design resembles the company&rsquo;s <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Keyboard">Magic Keyboard</a>. Microsoft&#39;s design was <a href="/nl/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/toetsenbord/">previously</a>&nbsp;blue.

Toetsenbord

A friendly-looking, tentacled space creature with two eyes. Most major platforms style their design after aliens in classic arcade games like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Invaders">Space Invaders</a>, rendering it purple and pixellated, as if in 8-bit graphics.

Samsung&rsquo;s design resembles an <a href="/nl/octopus/">octopus</a> and <a href="/nl/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/buitenaards-monster/">previously featured</a> a big-brained <a href="/nl/buitenaards-wezen/">alien</a>, &agrave; la <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cage_(Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series)">Star Trek</a>. Earlier designs from <a href="/nl/google/android-7.0/buitenaards-monster/">Google</a> and <a href="/nl/microsoft/windows-10/buitenaards-monster/">Microsoft</a> depicted more cartoon-like alien monsters.

May be used of topics concerning extraterrestrial life,&nbsp;outer space, gaming, and computing, but also enjoys a range of idiosyncratic applications, such as&nbsp;conveying a&nbsp;sense of weirdness, wackiness, or excitement, given that the emoji looks like it is raising its arms shouting&nbsp;Yay! on many platforms.

Buitenaards Monster

A laptop personal computer. Depicted as a black or gray device, opened to show a dark or blue screen, keyboard, and touchpad.

Commonly used for various content concerning computer technology, work, and activity.

Previous designs resembled a <a href="/nl/desktop/">desktop computer</a>&nbsp;(e.g., <a href="/nl/apple/ios-9.0/laptop/">iMac</a>) on many platforms, hence its Unicode name of&nbsp;Personal Computer. Apple&rsquo;s design now resembles a MacBook.

Laptop

A desktop personal computer. Generally depicted as a black or gray monitor with a dark or blue screen.

Like <a href="/nl/laptop/">💻 Laptop Computer</a>, used for various content concerning computer technology, work, and activity. May also be used to represent <a href="/nl/laptop/">television</a>, as it resembles a flatscreen TV.

Desktop

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiniDisc">minidisc</a>, depicted as a small, silver or gold <a href="/nl/optische-schijf/">optical disc</a> housed in a square cartridge, its shutter positioned to the right.

<a href="http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/02/sony-announces-the-end-of-the-minidisc/">Discontinued</a> as an audio and data storage format in 2013 due to the success of CD and MP3 technology, though the emoji is commonly used to represent CDs, DVDs, and related film and music content, especially albums.

Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/nl/samsung/experience-9.0/harddisk/">previously featured</a> a silver disc labeled MD, for minidisc. <a href="/nl/au-kddi/type-a-2/harddisk/">Early designs</a> from au by KDDI showed an angled <a href="/nl/floppydisk/">💾 Floppy Disk</a>, perhaps as being inserted or ejected into a computer drive.

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pager">pager</a>, as worn on the waist to alert a person to a phone call&nbsp;or short text message. Popular in the 1980&ndash;90s before <a href="/nl/mobiele-telefoon/">mobile phones</a>, though still used by some medical and emergency personnel. Very occasionally used to represent alerts, digital communication, or nostalgia for old technology.

The Unicode Consortium approved the following characters as part of <a href="http://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode7.0.0/">Unicode 7.0</a>, released on June 16, 2014.&nbsp;Support for these emoji characters rely on updates from platform vendors such as Apple, Google and Microsoft.

Initially, 250&nbsp;new characters in Unicode 7.0 were approved for emoji presentation, however this was later reduced to 103 Standard Additions which are listed below. The other characters remain part of Unicode, but are not recommended&nbsp;to be included as emojis.

The exception to this was the <a href="/nl/spraakballon-naar-links/" title="🗨 Left Speech Bubble">Left Speech Bubble</a>, and as such wasn&#39;t initially specified on other platforms as an emoji. A later-accepted&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/diverse-spy-proposal/">proposal</a> updated this.

South Korean financial technology company Toss (토스) provides its own emoji design set within its mobile application. The design set, entitled Toss Face (토스페이스), has also been made available as a free font file for Apple devices.

First launched in early 2022, the Toss Face emoji set originally included a series of intentionally divergent emoji designs compared to those of other vendors.

The majority of these divergent designs followed two broad themes. Firstly,&nbsp;rendering culturally-specific Japanese emojis with designs representing related South Korean concepts (e.g. the <a href="/nl/sake/">🍶 Sake</a> emoji appearing as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makgeolli">makgeolli</a>).

Secondly, emojis&nbsp;representing older technologies with designs representing more contemporary innovations. (e.g. <a href="/nl/pager/">📟 Pager</a> displaying as instant messaging speech bubbles; <a href="/nl/riksja/">🛺 Auto Rickshaw</a> being displyed as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unmanned_aerial_vehicle">drone</a>).

In March 2022 these divergent designs were updated to accurately reflect Unicode&#39;s recommendations. In April 2022 they were re-added to the Toss app using <a href="/nl/glossary/">Private Use Area</a> codepoints.&nbsp;

Released 2022-03-28, this update to the Toss Face emoji set changed a series of previously divergent emoji designs&nbsp;to accurately reflect Unicode&#39;s&nbsp;recommendations.

Released 2022-02-28, the original version of Toss&#39; Toss Face emoji set provided support for emojis up to late 2020&#39;s <a href="/nl/emoji-13.1/">Emoji 13.1</a> recommendations.
