Fencer

A yellow face wearing a white surgical mask, as used by <a href="/health-worker/">health workers</a> in <a href="/hospital/">hospitals</a>&nbsp;as well as the general public during a <a href="/coronavirus/">pandemic</a>. May be worn&nbsp;to avoid <a href="/face-with-thermometer/">sickness</a> or spreading airborne diseases.

Displayed with closed eyes on most platforms. Google,&nbsp;and WhatsApp show&nbsp;this emoji with neutral eyes.&nbsp;Apple changed this emoji to show with smiling eyes&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/mask-wearing-emoji-now-smiles/">in iOS 14.2 and above</a>, as did Microsoft in their <a href="/microsoft/windows-11-november-2021-update/">Windows 11 November 2021</a> update.

In 2020, this emoji became <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/spread-of-the-coronavirus-emoji/">primarily used</a> in reference to <a href="/coronavirus/">Coronavirus / COVID-19</a>.

Face with Medical Mask

A menacing, red mask featuring a grotesquely long nose, angry eyes, and bushy eyebrows and mustache. Depicts a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tengu">tengu</a>, a proud trickster figure in Japanese folklore.

May popularly denote evil, anger, cruel or mischievous behavior, and sexual suggestion, due to the phallic appearance of its nose. May also represent supernatural or figurative trolls, goblins, and other such beings.

Japanese Goblin

A thin, artist&#39;s paintbrush, as used to paint a <a href="/framed-picture/">picture</a>. Often depicted with reddish paint on its pointed bristles. Positioned at a 45&deg; angle, its tip at the lower left.

Commonly used for various content concerning the art of painting or fine art more generally. Often paired with <a href="/artist-palette/">🎨&nbsp;Artist Palette</a>.

Lower Left Paintbrush

A yellow face with big glasses, a large nose, thick eyebrows, and a mustache. Used to represent someone in disguise.

The features of this particular disguised face are taken from the &ldquo;Groucho Mask&rdquo; or &ldquo;Groucho Glasses,&rdquo; designed in the likeness of the caricature played by Julius Henry Marx in the Marx Brothers&#39; films. These comedic films were popular in the 1930s and &lsquo;40s, and the mask has been a mainstay of joke shops since <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2000/06/18/books/there-ain-t-no-sanity-claus.html">as early as the 1940s</a>.

SoftBank&nbsp;<a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ja&amp;tl=en&amp;js=y&amp;prev=_t&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.softbank.jp%2Fmobile%2Finfo%2Fpersonal%2Fsoftware%2F20170120-02%2F&amp;edit-text=">announced</a> it would switch to using Google emoji designs from 2016, for&nbsp;phones supporting <a href="/google/android-7.0/">Android 7.0</a> or above. SoftBank no longer releases&nbsp;updates to this emoji set.

A minor update to this set removed regional indicators in 2016, but otherwise delivered no new changes.
