The letter&nbsp;V, which can be used as part of a regional indicator pair&nbsp;to create <a href="/flags/">emoji flags</a> for various countries.

Previously this emoji incorrectly&nbsp;<a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/regional-indicator-symbol-letter-v/" title="🇻 Regional Indicator Symbol Let­ter V on Samsung Galaxy Note 7 (revised)">depicted&nbsp;the letter U</a>&nbsp;when displayed in isolation on Samsung devices.&nbsp;This was corrected in <a href="/samsung/one-ui-2.0/regional-indicator-symbol-letter-u/">January 2020</a>.

Some characters in <a href="/unicode-5.2/">prior</a>&nbsp;versions of Unicode were retroactively updated to provide&nbsp;an emoji presentation. This release was the first to introduce new characters for the sole purpose of compatability with emojis being used in Japan.

SoftBank&nbsp;is a Japanese carrier&nbsp;which had its own emoji set for the years 1997&mdash;2016. SoftBank (known as J-Phone at the time) created the&nbsp;first emoji set known to be featured on an early mobile phone.

The SoftBank emoji designs&nbsp;heavily influenced&nbsp;<a href="/apple/iphone-os-2.2/">Apple&#39;s original emoji font</a>&nbsp;which was&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/apples-emoji-evolution-1997-2018/">designed to be compatible with this set</a>&nbsp;when launching in Japan, due&nbsp;to iPhone being a SoftBank-exclusive phone when first released.

SoftBank&nbsp;<a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ja&amp;tl=en&amp;js=y&amp;prev=_t&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.softbank.jp%2Fmobile%2Finfo%2Fpersonal%2Fsoftware%2F20170120-02%2F&amp;edit-text=">announced</a> it would switch to using Google emoji designs from 2016, for&nbsp;phones supporting <a href="/google/android-7.0/">Android 7.0</a> or above. SoftBank no longer releases&nbsp;updates to this emoji set.
