Fax Machine

The front page of a newspaper, as people once read the news before the internet. Commonly used for various content concerning news, media, and journalism as well as personal news.

Most platforms depict a nondescript masthead, images, and columns of text. Apple&rsquo;s newspaper is called The Apple Times, featuring a logo based on its&nbsp;<a href="/eagle/">🦅 Eagle</a> and a picture of its <a href="/volcano/">🌋 Volcano</a>. Facebook&rsquo;s is called Daily Feed, with a headline &ldquo;El Capitan&rdquo; and picture of that famous <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Capitan">rock formation in Yosemite National Park</a>. WhatsApp&rsquo;s paper reads Daily News with a picture of a <a href="/world-map/">map</a>.

Newspaper

A classic telephone, as a landline home phone. Most platforms depict a red, push-button phone with the <a href="/telephone-receiver/">handset</a> on the base.&nbsp;Some platforms feature&nbsp;designs with&nbsp;rotary dials.

Used for various content concerning literal and figurative phone calling. Also used as an icon before a phone number.

Black Telephone

A <a href="/desktop-computer/">computer</a> printer, as at a home office. Generally depicted as a grayish device with a power button and paper loaded in its tray, sometimes printing out a document. May be used for various content concerning printing, including as a Print icon,&nbsp;as well as for office work and technology more generally.

Printer

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pager">pager</a>, as worn on the waist to alert a person to a phone call&nbsp;or short text message. Popular in the 1980&ndash;90s before <a href="/mobile-phone/">mobile phones</a>, though still used by some medical and emergency personnel. Very occasionally used to represent alerts, digital communication, or nostalgia for old technology.

The handset of a traditional&nbsp;<a href="/telephone/" title="☎ Black Telephone">telephone</a>, with speaker and microphone. Generally depicted in black at a 45&deg; angle.

Like <a href="/telephone/">☎️&nbsp;Telephone</a>, used for various content concerning literal and figurative phone-calling. Also used as an icon before a phone number.

Microsoft&rsquo;s design is red.

<a href="/au-kddi/type-a-2/telephone-receiver/">Early designs</a> for the telephone receiver emoji from au by KDDI resembled a mobile phone, and vice versa,&nbsp;before having their codepoints swapped in later releases.

Telephone Receiver

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MiniDisc">minidisc</a>, depicted as a small, silver or gold <a href="/optical-disk/">optical disc</a> housed in a square cartridge, its shutter positioned to the right.

<a href="http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/02/sony-announces-the-end-of-the-minidisc/">Discontinued</a> as an audio and data storage format in 2013 due to the success of CD and MP3 technology, though the emoji is commonly used to represent CDs, DVDs, and related film and music content, especially albums.

Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/computer-disk/">previously featured</a> a silver disc labeled MD, for minidisc. <a href="/au-kddi/type-a-2/computer-disk/">Early designs</a> from au by KDDI showed an angled <a href="/floppy-disk/">💾 Floppy Disk</a>, perhaps as being inserted or ejected into a computer drive.

Minidisc

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3.5_floppy">3.5-inch floppy disk</a>, a data storage format popular in the 1980&ndash;90s but largely preserved as a Save icon in computer programs. Shown with its silver shutter positioned up and in a black housing with&nbsp;a white label, accented with blue or red.

Occasionally used for various content concerning computers, including nostalgia for old technology, as well as to represent electronic saving.

Floppy Disk

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joystick">joystick</a>, as used in playing classic arcade, computer, or video games. Generally depicted with a black base, red-knobbed control stick, and one or more red buttons.

Commonly used for content concerning various types of gaming; occasionaly applied to aviation and aircraft.

Google&#39;s base was <a href="/google/android-8.0/joystick/">previously</a>&nbsp;blue, and&nbsp;Microsoft <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/joystick/">previously featured</a> a more modern design.

Commonly used for various content concerning photography as well as an icon for a picture, as before an upload, link, or credit.

Camera with Flash

A video camera, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camcorder">camcorder</a> used to film home videos in the 1980&ndash;90s. Generally depicted as a gray or black video camera with viewfinder, control buttons, and lens pointed&nbsp;left.

Commonly used for various content concerning film and video as well as an icon for a video, as before an upload, link, or credit.

Samsung&rsquo;s is fitted with a <a href="/microphone/">microphone</a>. Google&rsquo;s design was <a href="/google/android-8.0/video-camera/">once&nbsp;blue</a> and also&nbsp;<a href="/google/android-7.0/video-camera/">previously featured</a> a flip screen.

Video Camera

A videotape cassette, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VHS">VHS</a> tape used to watch movies or record <a href="/television/">TV</a> on VCRs before <a href="/dvd/">DVDs</a> , DVRs, and streaming. Generally depicted as a black cassette with a white label between its reels.

Occasionally used for various content concerning film and video (taping) as well as an icon for a video, as before an upload, link, or credit. May also be used to represent audio <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cassette_tape">cassette tapes</a>.

Microsoft&rsquo;s design <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/videocassette/">previously resembled</a> a voicemail icon.

Videocassette

A mobile phone (cell phone), as used to text, check social media, or take <a href="/selfie/">selfies</a>. Depicted as a black or gray smartphone with a generic blue screen or multicolored app icons. Commonly used for various content concerning mobile phones, technology, and communication.

The designs from Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Samsung resemble phones offered by their respective companies, e.g., iPhone. WhatsApp&rsquo;s design features a night sky as its wallpaper, displaying the time as 9:34.

Mobile Phone

A <a href="/mobile-phone/">mobile phone</a> (cell phone) with a <a href="/right-arrow/">rightward&nbsp;arrow</a> pointed at it from the left. Intended to indicate an incoming call or message, but used to represent mobile phones, technology, and communication more generally.

Arrow color varies, but is often blue. Vendors implement the same design as <a href="/mobile-phone/">📱 Mobile Phone</a>.

The SoftBank emoji designs&nbsp;heavily influenced&nbsp;<a href="/apple/iphone-os-2.2/">Apple&#39;s original emoji font</a>&nbsp;which was&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/apples-emoji-evolution-1997-2018/">designed to be compatible with this set</a>&nbsp;when launching in Japan, due&nbsp;to iPhone being a SoftBank-exclusive phone when first released.

SoftBank&nbsp;<a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=ja&amp;tl=en&amp;js=y&amp;prev=_t&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.softbank.jp%2Fmobile%2Finfo%2Fpersonal%2Fsoftware%2F20170120-02%2F&amp;edit-text=">announced</a> it would switch to using Google emoji designs from 2016, for&nbsp;phones supporting <a href="/google/android-7.0/">Android 7.0</a> or above. The last update to SoftBank&#39;s emoji set was released in 2014 and discontinued in 2016. This release added 277 new characters

A minor update to this set removed regional indicators in 2016, but otherwise delivered no new changes.

This version added more detail to each character and was the first SoftBank release to show the majority of smileys as round characters rather than square edge-to-edge designs.

2008

Updated in 2006, this version of Softbank&#39;s emoji set is largely the same as the prior release, but with additional detail or shading on a number of emoji designs. Used throughout 2006&mdash;2007.
