A classic spider web (cobweb), as spun by a <a href="/spider/">🕷️ Spider</a> to catch prey. Depicted as a white, symmetrical, wheel-shaped web, as an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider_web#Orb_web_construction">orb web</a>,&nbsp;with six or eight equal sectors.

Commonly used during Halloween, to represent the superhero&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider-Man">Spider-Man</a>, or for a metaphorical web, net, or network. Not to be confused with <a href="/snowflake/">❄️ Snowflake</a>.

Spider Web

A face with small, open eyes, open frown, raised eyebrows, and a pale blue forehead, as if experiencing a <a href="/cold-face/">cold</a> flash.

While intended to represent fear (less intense than <a href="/face-screaming-in-fear/">😱&nbsp;Face Screaming in Fear</a>), it also conveys a wide variety of emotions, including feeling amazed, shocked, sad, upset, and <a href="/cold-face/">cold</a>. Bears the same expression as <a href="/anguished-face/">😧&nbsp;Anguished Face</a> on most platforms.

Unlike other vendors, Huawei&#39;s design shows this emoji holding a hand over its mouth, albeit differently to&nbsp;<a href="/face-with-open-eyes-and-hand-over-mouth">🫢&nbsp;Face with Open Eyes and Hand Over Mouth</a>&nbsp;and <a href="/face-with-hand-over-mouth">🤭 Face with Hand Over Mouth</a>.&nbsp;Samsung&rsquo;s design previously showed upper teeth and tongue.

Fearful Face

A yellow face screaming in fear, depicted by wide, white eyes, a long, open mouth, hands pressed on cheeks, and a pale&nbsp;blue forehead, as if it has lost its color. Its expression evokes Edvard Munch&rsquo;s iconic painting <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scream">The Scream</a>.

While intended to represent horror and fright, it commonly conveys such feelings as shock, awe, disbelief, and intense excitement, as a screaming fan.

Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/face-screaming-in-fear/">previously featured</a> a <a href="/ghost/">ghost</a> flying from its mouth. <a href="/weary-cat/">🙀&nbsp;Weary Cat Face</a> bears a similar expression.

Face Screaming in Fear

Boo! A white, cartoon ghost making a silly face. Its tongue is stuck out and arms are outstretched, as if trying to scare someone in a friendly way. Several platforms feature one larger, bulging eye, while others show the ghost winking.

Resembles a classic ghost costume for <a href="/halloween/">Halloween</a>. May also be used to convey something or someone is fun or goofy. Thanks to its raised arms, some use this&nbsp;emoji as a way of expressing an excited&nbsp;Yay!

May also be used to refer to the slang term &quot;ghosting&quot;, where a&nbsp;personal relationship is ended&nbsp;suddenly without explanation by one person withdrawing from all communication with another.

Samsung&#39;s design <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.0/ghost/">previously depicted</a> this as a smiley in a ghost costume.

This emoji predates the inclusion of emojis within <a href="/the-unicode-consortium">Unicode</a>. It was first added to early Japanese emoji keyboards by <a href="/softbank">Softbank</a>&nbsp;in <a href="/softbank/1999/ghost">1999</a>.

Ghost

A person who wields abilities beyond those of ordinary people and is dedicated to protecting the public. Generally depicted as wearing a colorful <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domino_mask">domino mask</a> and a cape.

This base emoji does not specify a gender, but is used to create the emojis for <a href="/man-superhero/">Man Superhero</a> and <a href="/woman-superhero/">Woman Superhero</a>.

The <a href="/supervillain/">Supervillain</a>&nbsp;is the nemesis of this emoji.

Superhero

A snake, a slithering reptile without limbs. Generally depicted as a yellowish-green snake facing left, with a long, coiled body and flicking a red, forked tongue.

May be used for various metaphorical senses of snake.

One of the 12 animals of the <a href="/chinese-new-year/">Chinese zodiac</a>. May also be used in association with&nbsp;<a href="/ophiuchus/">⛎ Ophiuchus</a>, the Serpent-Bearer, sometimes considered a 13th sign of the Western zodiac.

Snake

A snail, a slow-moving, snail-like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mollusca">mollusk</a> in a spiraling <a href="/spiral-shell/">shell</a>. Generally depicted as a brown snail in full profile facing left or right, with a brown, textured shell and tentacle-like eyes.

May be used to represent a slug and&nbsp;various senses of slow.

Twitter&rsquo;s snail has a purple body and yellow shell. Microsoft&rsquo;s snail <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/snail/">previously</a> had a green body.

Snail

A butterfly, a beautiful winged insect whose larva is a <a href="/bug/">caterpillar</a>. Depicted with its wings outspread, as a blue-and-black <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morpho">morpho butterfly</a> or orange-and-black <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarch_butterfly">monarch butterfly</a>.

May be used to represent a moth and ideas of beauty and happiness.

Since December 2023 this emoji has been used to reference the social media platform <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluesky">Bluesky</a>, due to the platform&#39;s logo being a blue butterfly.&nbsp;

Samsung&rsquo;s butterfly <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/butterfly/">previously</a> resembled a monarch.

Butterfly

A bug, or insect, generally depicted as a caterpillar, which becomes a <a href="/butterfly/">🦋 Butterfly</a>. Shown in full profile facing left, inching&nbsp;up on the back&nbsp;of its green, segmented, and&nbsp;textured body. Often featuring&nbsp;black stripes or yellow dots and tentacles on its head.

May be used to represent various insects, worms, and related animals. May also be used for&nbsp;metaphorical senses of bug.

Twitter&rsquo;s bug is purple. Apple&rsquo;s bug is hairy with a red head and legs and black stripes on its body. Facebook&rsquo;s&nbsp;bug also has a yellowish-orange head. <a href="/google/android-7.0/bug/">Google</a> and <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/bug/">Microsoft&rsquo;s</a> bugs previously resembled an orange centipede or millipede, and <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/bug/">Samsung&rsquo;s</a> had a cartoon-styled face with a purple nose.
