A fist raised in the air that may be used as a celebratory gesture: the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fist_pump">fist pump</a>.&nbsp;Can also be used to represent <a href="/keycap-digit-zero/" title="0⃣ Keycap 0">zero</a> items, due to a lack of any fingers being held up.

Sometimes used as a symbol of&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/the-resistance-will-be-emojified/">resistance</a>&nbsp;or defiance. Variations with darker skin tone are commonly used <a href="/raised-fist-dark-skin-tone/">to represent the #BlackLivesMatter movement</a>.

Also used between words to show that a lesson is being learned and to indicate someone is taking notes. For example, ✍️look✍️both✍️ways✍️before✍️you✍️cross✍️the✍️street. This use&nbsp;was popularized in <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/what-happens-in-the-tiktok-comments/">TikTok comments</a>. It uses the established practice of placing emojis between words for emphasis. Possibly influenced by the emphatic use of <a href="/clapping-hands/">👏 Clapping Hands</a>, which reflects speech-gesture pairings in Black English in the United States.

A hand waving most commonly used to say &ldquo;hello&rdquo; or &ldquo;goodbye&rdquo;.

This emoji can be used to convey a sense of <a href="https://youtu.be/ukJmB4rLNKA?t=2m">not being friends any more</a>&nbsp;when used on WeChat in China.

Released on 5 March 2024 for iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4, this was the first version of iOS to support the 118 new emojis in <a href="/emoji-15.1">Emoji 15.1</a>, including various direction-specific people emojis.

This update also changed all family emojis to display with one of the four silhouette symbol designs also used for the new non-gender-specifying family emojis added in <a href="/emoji-15.1">Emoji 15.1</a>.
