While this emoji is often used by people calling themselves nerds in a self-deprecating way, the nerdy glasses paired with buck teeth can, and often does, evoke anti-Asian stereotypes. The fact that the default color of emoji faces is yellow further pushes this emoji into racist &quot;<a href="https://hyperallergic.com/189200/asians-meet-new-yellow-emoji-with-frowny-face/">yellowface</a>&quot;&nbsp;territory.

Some platforms have redesigned nerd face&nbsp;over time to not have buck teeth, perhaps in acknowledgement of the harm this imagery&nbsp;may cause. Google, Facebook, WhatsApp, and JoyPixels <a href="/google/android-7.0/nerd-face/">originally</a> <a href="/facebook/2.0/nerd-face/">featured</a> <a href="/joypixels/4.0/nerd-face/">designs</a> with buck teeth but have since changed (or completely removed) the teeth on nerd face.

Apple, Twitter, Microsoft, Samsung, and other platforms still use designs for this emoji that include buck teeth.

Nerd Face

A classic alien face. The oval, bare head of a gray or green alien with large black eyes and a slight, friendly smile.&nbsp;Samsung depicts nostrils, Facebook a nose.

May represent extraterrestrial life or topics concerning outer space, but commonly conveys a playful sense of weirdness&nbsp;or strangeness, as if someone or something is&nbsp;out&nbsp;there or&nbsp;from another planet.

Available as an Apple&nbsp;<a href="/animoji/">Animoji</a>.

Apple previously displayed&nbsp;a similar looking&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.getemoji.com/post/116839074745/what-does-the-alien-emoji-mean-on-ios-its-an">alien head in a box</a> as a placeholder for an unknown emoji, but now shows a boxed question mark.

Extraterrestrial Alien

A friendly-looking, tentacled space creature with two eyes. Most major platforms style their design after aliens in classic arcade games like <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Invaders">Space Invaders</a>, rendering it purple and pixellated, as if in 8-bit graphics.

Samsung&rsquo;s design resembles an <a href="/octopus/">octopus</a> and <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/alien-monster/">previously featured</a> a big-brained <a href="/alien/">alien</a>, &agrave; la <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Cage_(Star_Trek:_The_Original_Series)">Star Trek</a>. Earlier designs from <a href="/google/android-7.0/alien-monster/">Google</a> and <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/alien-monster/">Microsoft</a> depicted more cartoon-like alien monsters.

May be used of topics concerning extraterrestrial life,&nbsp;outer space, gaming, and computing, but also enjoys a range of idiosyncratic applications, such as&nbsp;conveying a&nbsp;sense of weirdness, wackiness, or excitement, given that the emoji looks like it is raising its arms shouting&nbsp;Yay! on many platforms.

Alien Monster

A hand waving most commonly used to say &ldquo;hello&rdquo; or &ldquo;goodbye&rdquo;.

This emoji can be used to convey a sense of <a href="https://youtu.be/ukJmB4rLNKA?t=2m">not being friends any more</a>&nbsp;when used on WeChat in China.

Waving Hand Sign

The palm of a hand with the fingers spread apart. Held in a manner that may indicate the number five. Similar to <a href="/waving-hand/" title="👋 Waving Hand Sign">👋 Waving Hand</a>, but without any motion.

An emoji showing the fingers held together in a vertical orientation, often referred to as the Italian hand gesture ma che vuoi, sometimes called the &quot;finger purse.&quot;&nbsp;In Italy this gesture tends to be used in disagreement, frustration, or disbelief and can mean &ldquo;What do you want?&rdquo; or &ldquo;What are you saying?&rdquo; Outside Italy anyone performing a caricature of an Italian person, regardless of context or tone, might use this gesture.

Pinched Fingers has a variety of other culturally specific uses. In Israeli culture it can mean &ldquo;hold on,&rdquo; &ldquo;relax,&rdquo; or &ldquo;be patient.&rdquo; The K-Pop star <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kwon_Yu-ri">Yuri</a> uses it as a signature gesture to represent a <a href="/dumpling/">dumpling</a> and a general warm sentiment. Not to be confused with <a href="/pinching-hand/">🤏 Pinching Hand</a>, which has overlapping senses. Both are used to represent <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/the-pinching-hand-emoji-is-a-lot/">precision</a> when someone is making a sharp point with accompanying speech.

Pinched Fingers

Most commonly known as a ✌️&nbsp;Peace Sign, but traditionally called&nbsp;as a Victory Hand.&nbsp;Two&nbsp;fingers held up on one hand making a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V_sign">V sign</a>.

The reverse of this symbol is considered an offence gesture in <a href="/flag-united-kingdom/" title="🇬🇧 Flag For United Kingdom">British</a> culture, similar to giving the <a href="/middle-finger/" title="🖕 Reversed Hand With Middle Finger Extended">middle finger</a>.

Victory Hand

A&nbsp;fingers crossed emoji which&nbsp;displays&nbsp;the&nbsp;index (first) finger crossed over the&nbsp;middle (second)&nbsp;finger. Commonly used as a gesture indicating&nbsp;luck, or to show&nbsp;desire of a favorable outcome.

This emoji was <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/crossed-fingers/">previously</a> displayed with an additional finger on Samsung devices.

Hand with Index and Middle Fingers Crossed
