Bookmark Tabs

A bookmark, as used to mark one&#39;s&nbsp;place in a <a href="/open-book/">book</a>. May also represent bookmarks on an internet browser. Appearance varies across platforms, but generally depicted at&nbsp;a 45&deg; angle as a thin, white or red strip with a decorative tie and design, such as flower or <a href="/star/">star</a>.

May be used for various content concerning reading, labeling, or tagging.

WhatsApp&rsquo;s bookmark is purple. Twitter&rsquo;s design shows a red bookmark in a closed book, similar to previous designs from <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/bookmark/">Microsoft</a>. <a href="/twitter/twemoji-1.0/bookmark/">Twitter</a> and <a href="/google/android-7.0/bookmark/">Google&rsquo;s</a> designs previously featured a blue bookmark.

Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/orange-book/">previously</a> included the text&nbsp;Orange Book.

Orange Book

A closed, blue, hardcover book. Commonly used for various content concerning reading, writing, learning, and schooling. May also be used as a blue accent color.

Apple&rsquo;s cover features the easter egg &ldquo;Vol. 1 by <a href="http://www.mactrast.com/2017/05/who-exactly-is-john-appleseed/">John Appleseed</a>.&rdquo; Apple&rsquo;s original design for this emoji said &ldquo;Vol. 3 by John Appleseed,&rdquo; however now this title appears on Apple&rsquo;s <a href="/blue-book/">📘 Blue Book</a> design.

Google&rsquo;s design <a href="/google/android-8.0/closed-book/">previously</a> featured&nbsp;a brown cover with a red bookmark. Samsung&rsquo;s artwork <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/closed-book/">once featured a blue cover printed with the initials HYDM</a>, though its latest design has a red cover.

Closed Book

A set of tabbed dividers or file guides, as used to organize a <a href="/card-index/">card index</a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href="/card-file-box/">file box</a>. Depicted with three or more multicolored tabs on manila paper.

Commonly used for various content concerning paper or computer files, organization, and various types of data, information, and professional or academic work.

Positioned at a 45&deg; angle with its tip at the lower left. Like <a href="/black-nib/">✒️&nbsp;Black Nib</a>, commonly used for various content concerning writing, drawing, and signing (e.g., laws, deals, in sports).

Apple and Twitter&nbsp;feature the same designs as their <a href="/black-nib/">✒️&nbsp;Black Nib</a>, but with their tips angled to the lower left.

Lower Left Fountain Pen

A blue or black ballpoint pen, as used for everyday writing. Depicted with its cap removed onto its end or as retractable pen. Positioned at a 45&deg; angle, its tip at the lower left. Commonly used for various content concerning writing (e.g., creative, professional) as well as signing (deals, laws, in sports).

Google&#39;s design <a href="/google/android-7.0/pen/">previously featured</a> a brown-colored pen. Not to be confused with <a href="/black-nib/">✒️&nbsp;Black Nib</a> or <a href="/fountain-pen/">🖋️&nbsp;Fountain Pen</a>, though their applications often overlap.

Lower Left Ballpoint Pen

WhatsApp and Facebook&rsquo;s designs depict an old-fashioned office <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memorandum">memorandum</a> on pink paper. An emoji set from au by KDDI; a Japanese mobile phone carrier. Using black and white emoji&nbsp;characters&nbsp;<a href="/au-kddi/type-a-2/">from 1999</a>, this set <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-1/">gained animation in the early 2000s</a>&nbsp;before moving to static, <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-3/">high resolution designs</a>.

In 2012, au&nbsp;replaced its custom designs with <a href="/au-kddi/type-f/">a new set</a> heavily inspired by, and designed to be compatible with, emojis from NTT Docomo.

Japanese mobile manufacturer with its own early emoji designs. Discontinued in 2013, replaced by Noto Color Emoji.

First available in May 2012, this emoji set is the first from au by KDDI to unify designs to largely mimic the set from NTT Docomo,&nbsp;providing&nbsp;greater cross-platform consistency. This was the first and only emoji set from au to move away from <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-3/">realistic designs</a> to more abstract symbols.

Shigetaka Kurita, the creator of the first Docomo designs, is <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2013/3/4/3966140/how-emoji-conquered-the-world">reported to have assisted with this effort</a>.

Type F

A higher resolution version of au&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="/au-kddi/type-d-1/">Type D-2</a>&nbsp;emoji set, but without animation. This emoji set was the last revision from au which featured designs unique to the company. Available as early as 2003, this set was in common use from 2005&mdash;2012 on au devices.

The <a href="/au-kddi/type-f/">following release</a> unified designs to more closely match those from NTT Docomo.

Type D-3

A higher resolution version of au&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="/au-kddi/type-d-1/">Type D-1</a>&nbsp;emoji set available on higher end devices at the time. Replaced by <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-3/">Type D-3</a>, which uses the same designs but without animation, and at a higher resolution.

Type D-2

A complete redesign which followed <a href="/au-kddi/type-c-2/">Type C-2</a> from au. Animated, relatively low resolution pixel art. <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-2/">Type D-2</a>&nbsp;features the same range and designs, at a higher resolution. First available from August 2001, but in common use in 2003. Used on older devices than the Type D-2 set.

Some changes from the previous release <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20031010032355/http://au.kddi.com:80/email/au_dakara/emoji/">were noted on the KDDI website</a>.

Type D-1

Type C-2 redesigned all emojis from <a href="/au-kddi/type-b-3/">Type B-3</a> and expanded the number of smileys available from one to seven. The new designs in this released used&nbsp;more vibrant colors, and this is the first set from au to include <a href="/au-kddi/type-c-2/pile-of-poo/">💩&nbsp;Pile of Poo</a> which had been <a href="/softbank/1997/pile-of-poo/">available</a> on some SoftBank (n&eacute;e J-Phone)&nbsp;as early as 1997.

Created in 2000, but potentially not in widespread use until&nbsp;2002. Replaced by <a href="/au-kddi/type-d-1/">Type D-1</a> in 2003.

Type C-2

The same set of characters as available in <a href="/au-kddi/type-b-2/">Type B-2</a>&nbsp;with similar designs that included additional shading and detail.&nbsp;Available from August 2000, and&nbsp;commonly seen on au devices in&nbsp;2001-2002. This character set was supported <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20071009235732/http://developer.openwave.com:80/documentation/xhtml_mp_css_reference/icons.html#674480">in the OpenWave Mobile Browser 6.2</a> on au devices.

Replaced in 2002 by <a href="/au-kddi/type-c-2/">Type C-2</a>, which used entirely different designs.

Type B-3

A color revision of the previous <a href="/au-kddi/type-a-2/">Type A-2 emoji set</a> from au. Many characters retained their design in this colorization, while other designs were also updated.

Available from August 2000, this set is closely related to the <a href="/au-kddi/type-b-3/">Type B-3</a> set available in a similar timeframe.
