An ambulance, used to transport <a href="/face-with-medical-mask/" title="😷 Face With Medical Mask">patients</a> between their <a href="/house/" title="🏠 House Building">home</a> and the <a href="/hospital/" title="🏥 Hospital">hospital</a>.

A round white and orange or red ring buoy with string laced through its perimeter. Also called a life preserver.

Maybe be used to talk about water, boats, and safety. May also be used metaphorically to talk about someone or something that saves.&nbsp;

Ring Buoy

Ding! A call bell, as pressed at a front&nbsp;desk or reception&nbsp;to alert staff for service, such as from a <a href="/person-tipping-hand/">concierge</a> or bellhop (porter) to carry <a href="/luggage/">luggage</a> at a <a href="/hotel/">hotel</a>. Generally depicted as a golden <a href="/bell/">bell</a> on a wooden stand.

Commonly represents alerts or notifications to bring attention to important content. May also be used of various content concerning the hospitality and service industries.

Microsoft&rsquo;s design <a href="/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/bellhop-bell/">previously</a>&nbsp;featured&nbsp;a silver bell radiating yellow rays, as if ringing.

Bellhop Bell

A timepiece set in advance to startle a person awake at the designated time with its two bells. That is, before hitting snooze.&nbsp;Appearance varies across platforms, but depicted as a classic, wind-up, bedside alarm clock, often red in color.

May be used for various content concerning alarms, alerts, <a href="/person-in-bed/">sleeping</a>, waking, and time more generally.

Alarm Clock

Time&rsquo;s up! A timer set to count down and sound an alarm after a designated amount of time, as used in the kitchen. Appearance varies by platform. Commonly used for various content concerning time, including countdowns and deadlines.

Apple, WhatsApp, and Facebook&rsquo;s designs resemble kitchen timers. Other designs may be confused with <a href="/mantelpiece-clock/">🕰️&nbsp;Mantelpiece Clock</a> or other clock emojis.

Timer Clock

A postal horn (post horn). Depicted as a coiled, valveless, brass horn, like a bugle or <a href="/trumpet/">trumpet</a>, with two red tassels. Sometimes used to mark announcements as well as for various content concerning brass instruments, music, or mail.

In the 18&ndash;19th centuries, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post_horn">post horns</a> signaled the arrival of and cleared the way for mail coaches, like a modern-day&nbsp;<a href="/police-car-light/">siren</a>. Used today as a symbol on <a href="/postbox/">postboxes</a> (mailboxes) and by many European postal services, as seen featured in <a href="/post-office/">🏤 European Post Office</a>.

Postal Horn

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pager">pager</a>, as worn on the waist to alert a person to a phone call&nbsp;or short text message. Popular in the 1980&ndash;90s before <a href="/mobile-phone/">mobile phones</a>, though still used by some medical and emergency personnel. Very occasionally used to represent alerts, digital communication, or nostalgia for old technology.

Pager

The front page of a newspaper, as people once read the news before the internet. Commonly used for various content concerning news, media, and journalism as well as personal news.

Most platforms depict a nondescript masthead, images, and columns of text. Apple&rsquo;s newspaper is called The Apple Times, featuring a logo based on its&nbsp;<a href="/eagle/">🦅 Eagle</a> and a picture of its <a href="/volcano/">🌋 Volcano</a>. Facebook&rsquo;s is called Daily Feed, with a headline &ldquo;El Capitan&rdquo; and picture of that famous <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Capitan">rock formation in Yosemite National Park</a>. WhatsApp&rsquo;s paper reads Daily News with a picture of a <a href="/world-map/">map</a>.

Newspaper

A newspaper rolled up and bound, as for delivery to a house. Generally positioned at a 45&deg; angle. Commonly used for various content concerning news, media, and journalism&nbsp;as well as personal news.

Rolled-Up Newspaper

A fire extinguisher, as used to put out small <a href="/fire/">fires</a>. Depicted as a red tank with a black hose and pressure gauge. Most platforms include an image of a flame on a white label.

Commonly used for various content concerning fire safety, emergencies, and literal and figurative fires.

Fire Extinguisher

SOS is the description for the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SOS">distress signal in Morse Code</a>.&nbsp;This emoji means SOS or &ldquo;emergency&rdquo;.

Some characters in <a href="/unicode-5.2/">prior</a>&nbsp;versions of Unicode were retroactively updated to provide&nbsp;an emoji presentation. This release was the first to introduce new characters for the sole purpose of compatability with emojis being used in Japan.

Samsung devices use <a href="https://news.samsung.com/global/samsungs-emoji-suite-makes-for-a-more-emotional-digital-world">their own emoji designs</a>&nbsp;which are different to those used on other <a href="/google/">Android devices</a>. These&nbsp;glossy emojis&nbsp;appear on devices such as the Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note series and are updated as part of the Samsung One UI interface layer (previously Samsung Experience, before that Samsung TouchWiz)&nbsp;which runs on top of Android.

Note that Samsung users may see select emojis display as their <a href="/google/">Google</a>&nbsp;set design. This is due to <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/faster-emoji-updates-on-the-way-for-android-apps/">Android AppCompat</a>, which will display a Google emoji design within an app or web platform&nbsp;when a Samsung device has not yet been updated to support that particular emoji.

Since the introduction of Samsung&#39;s emoji set in <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-2.0">2014</a>, various Unicode characters that have not been recommended to have emoji presentation have nevertheless been given a colorful emoji design on Samsung platforms. Beginning its rollout for select Samsung devices on 28 March 2024, Samsung&#39;s One UI 6.1&nbsp;revised a considerable number of previously available emoji designs.

Many emojis had subtle modifications made to their outline, contrast, and shading, including the majority of&nbsp;<a href="/people">🧑 People</a> emojis. Meanwhile, many emojis within&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href="/travel-places">🚀 Travel &amp; Places</a> and&nbsp;<a href="/objects">💡 Objects</a> categories were given more extensive redesigns.&nbsp;
