Crocodile

A friendly, cartoon-styled face of a lion&mdash;the large cat and king of the jungle&mdash;looking straight ahead. Depicted as a golden-yellow lion face with a light- or dark-brown mane, white muzzle, and neutral expression.

Often used with an affectionate tone. Does not have a full-bodied lion emoji counterpart. A lion is represented as <a href="/leo/">♌ Leo</a> in the Western zodiac.

Available as an Apple&nbsp;<a href="/animoji/">Animoji</a>.

Apple&#39;s lion <a href="/apple/ios-10.2/lion/">previously</a> featured a timid-looking expression.

Lion Face

A zebra, a horse-like mammal with black-and-white stripes. Variously depicted in full profile on all fours facing left or as a&nbsp;zebra head facing left with a short mane.

Not to be confused with <a href="/horse/">🐎 Horse</a>. Some vendors implement a similar face as their <a href="/horse-face/">🐴 Horse Face</a>.

Apple, Microsoft, WhatsApp, Samsung, and Facebook&rsquo;s designs feature the full animal; Google and Twitter&#39;s&nbsp;designs feature a head with a short mane and black muzzle. Facebook&rsquo;s design <a href="/facebook/2.1/zebra/">previously</a> featured only a zebra head, as did <a href="/samsung/one-ui-1.0/zebra/">Samsung&#39;s</a>.

Zebra Face

A deer, a fleet-footed, hoofed mammal whose males (bucks, stags) generally have antlers. Variously depicted as a light-brown deer in full profile on all fours facing left or as a&nbsp;deer face looking straight head;&nbsp;both depictions feature large, branched antlers.

May be used to represent elk, moose, antelope, or reindeer, especially in connection with <a href="/christmas/">Christmas</a>.&nbsp;Most platforms display a deer in full profile.&nbsp;Twitter&nbsp;shows a deer face.

Google&rsquo;s deer <a href="/google/android-8.0/deer/">previously</a> had a red nose, as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolph_the_Red-Nosed_Reindeer">Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer</a>. Apple and WhatsApp&rsquo;s deers are <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-tailed_deer">white-tailed</a>.

Deer

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_buffalo">water buffalo</a>, a bovine used to plough rice fields in parts of Asia. Depicted in gray or black in full profile on all fours facing left, with a tail and broad horns curled up at the tips.

Often used to represent a bull. Not to be confused with <a href="/ox/">🐂 Ox</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Microsoft&rsquo;s design was <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/water-buffalo/">previously</a> brown.

Water Buffalo

A giraffe, the tallest animal on Earth, with spots and a long neck. Generally depicted in yellow or tan in full profile on all fours facing left, with distinctive brown spots and small, horn-like structures.

Samsung&rsquo;s designs feature a giraffe face looking straight ahead. Facebook&rsquo;s design <a href="/facebook/2.1/giraffe/">previously</a> featured only a giraffe face, as did <a href="/microsoft/windows-10-fall-creators-update/giraffe/">Microsoft&#39;s</a>.

Giraffe Face

An elephant, the largest land animal on Earth,&nbsp;with a long trunk and, often, tusks. Generally depicted in gray in full profile on all fours facing left, with tusks and prominent ears, as an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_elephant">African</a> (vs. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_elephant">Asian</a>) elephant.

<a href="/google/android-7.0/elephant/">Google</a> and <a href="/facebook/2.0/elephant/">Facebook&rsquo;s</a> elephants were previously blue in color. Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/elephant/">previously</a> featured a cartoon-styled elephant with a red blanket&nbsp;on its back and blowing a <a href="/red-heart/">red heart</a> from its trunk.

Because the elephant is a symbol of the Republican Party of the United States, it may be used in political contexts

Elephant

A rhinoceros, a large mammal with one or two massive horns on its nose. Generally shown in light gray with two horns, depicted in full profile on all fours or as a rhinoceros head looking left.

Resembles the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_rhinoceros">white</a> or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_rhinoceros">black rhinoceros</a>.

Apple, Google, Microsoft, WhatsApp, and Facebook&rsquo;s designs feature the full animal, while&nbsp;Samsung&nbsp;and Twitter&rsquo;s designs feature only the&nbsp;rhinoceros&#39; head.

Rhinoceros

Google&rsquo;s design used to&nbsp;feature&nbsp;a purple, cartoon-styled hippopotamus face. Facebook&rsquo;s hippopotamus is opening massive jaws, revealing tusks.

Hippopotamus

A kangaroo, a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marsupial">marsupial</a> with a large tail and legs. Depicted in yellowish-brown in full profile facing left with large, pointed ears, shown either resting on its hind legs and tail or jumping.

Commonly used in connection with <a href="/flag-australia/">Australia</a>, where the animal is found.

Kangaroo

The face of a frog, the hopping amphibian. Generally depicted as a friendly, cartoon-styled, light-green frog looking straight ahead, with large&nbsp;eyes, slightly open mouth, and nostrils.

Popularly paired with <a href="/hot-beverage/">☕️ Hot Beverage</a> to represent the <a href="http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/but-thats-none-of-my-business">But That&rsquo;s None of My Business</a> meme (used for gossip or sarcasm) or <a href="https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/pepe-the-frog">Pepe the Frog</a> (associated with trolling and the alt-right).

Facebook&rsquo;s design previously resembled <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kermit_the_Frog">Kermit the Frog</a>.

Frog Face

A turtle, a slow-moving reptile with a shell. Depicted as a light-green turtle in full profile on all fours facing left, with a long neck and green, textured shell.

May be used to represent a tortoise and various senses of slow.

WhatsApp&rsquo;s turtle has light-brown skin,&nbsp;Facebook&rsquo;s a yellow-rimmed shell.

Turtle

A gold or silver hook. Can be used to represent literal hooks like the kinds you use to crochet or catch fish.
