Slightly Frowning Face

A yellow face with simple, open eyes and a thin, closed smile. Conveys a wide range of positive, happy, and friendly sentiments. Its tone can&nbsp;also be patronizing, passive-aggressive, or ironic, as if saying This is fine when it&rsquo;s really not.

Slightly Smiling Face

A classic smiley, turned upside down. Implemented as a flipped version of&nbsp;<a href="/slightly-smiling-face/">🙂 Slightly Smiling Face</a>&nbsp;on most platforms.

Commonly used to convey&nbsp;irony, sarcasm, joking, or a sense of goofiness or silliness.&nbsp;Its intent can be&nbsp;similar to the bemused Oh well! of <a href="/person-shrugging/">🤷&nbsp;Person Shrugging</a> or the shruggie emoticon, &macr;\_(ツ)_/&macr;.

Microsoft&#39;s design <a href="/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/upside-down-face/">previously featured</a> a full-toothed grin.

Upside-Down Face

A yellow face with slightly raised eyebrows, a frown, and eyes looking to the side. May convey a variety of negative emotions, including irritation, displeasure, grumpiness, and skepticism, as if giving the <a href="/eyes/">side-eye</a>.

Not to be confused with <a href="/smirking-face/">😏&nbsp;Smirking Face</a>, which features similar eyes but a wry smile.

Unamused Face

A yellow face with raised eyebrows, enlarged eyes, slight frown, and long nose,&nbsp;indicating&nbsp;it&rsquo;s telling a lie in the manner of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinocchio">Pinocchio</a>. Like that character, Facebook&#39;s design features a wooden nose.&nbsp;

May represent lying, a liar, and other concepts of deceit and dishonesty to varying degrees of intensity. Sometimes used to convey disbelief (e.g., You must be kidding) or feeling abashed (e.g., as if&nbsp;caught in the act of lying).

Lying Face

A yellow face with open eyes and a skewed frown, as if scrunching its cheeks or chewing its lips. A look of&nbsp;feeling unsure.

While it can convey confusion or hesitation,&nbsp;it is also commonly used for slight sadness, disappointment, and frustration.

Huawei&#39;s design for this emoji includes a&nbsp;<a href="/question-mark">❓ Red Question Mark</a>.

<a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/confused-face/">Samsung</a> previously included raised eyebrows, as did <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/confused-face/">Microsoft</a> along with a rotated&nbsp;S-shaped mouth, &agrave; la the :S emoticon.&nbsp;Google&rsquo;s design also <a href="/google/android-8.0/confused-face/">previously&nbsp;included</a>&nbsp;a furrowed brow.

Confused Face

A yellow face with open eyes, raised or furrowed eyebrows, and a broad frown.&nbsp;May convey a variety of moderately sad or tense emotions, including concern, anxiety, alarm, disappointment, and unhappiness.&nbsp;

Apple&rsquo;s design features the same eye expression as on its <a href="/hushed-face/">😯&nbsp;Hushed Face</a>. Not to be confused with <a href="/astonished-face/">😲 &nbsp;Astonished Face</a> or <a href="/dizzy-face/">😵&nbsp;Dizzy Face</a>.&nbsp;

Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/worried-face/">previously included</a> sweat droplets coming from its cheeks, a shorthand for anxiety in manga and anime.

Worried Face

A classic sad face. A yellow face with&nbsp;simple, open eyes and wide, steep frown. May convey such feelings as moderate concern or disappointment and affectionate sadness, as when missing a loved one. Its sentiment is usually more intense than <a href="/slightly-frowning-face/">🙁&nbsp;Slightly Frowning Face</a>, which has a smaller frown.

This smiley predates Unicode emoji support. In its Unicode name of White Frowning Face, white&nbsp;does not refer to skin tone or ethnicity, although&nbsp;Samsung&rsquo;s <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.0/frowning-face/">early designs</a>&nbsp;colored the face white.&nbsp;See the glossary for the&nbsp;term&nbsp;<a href="/glossary/#white" title="📖 Glossary">white</a>&nbsp;in Unicode character names.

White Frowning Face

A yellow face with small, open eyes and an open frown. Samsung&rsquo;s design shows upper teeth and tongue. Meaning widely varies, but may convey mild sadness, disappointment, concern, and amazement.

An early Microsoft design showed a face with its eyebrows <a href="/microsoft/windows-8.1/frowning-face-with-open-mouth/">contorted in anger</a>.

Frowning Face with Open Mouth

A face with open eyes and a small, open frown. Its eyebrows are furrowed, with a single bead of cold sweat dripping down, and its forehead is pale blue, as if experiencing a <a href="/cold-face/">cold</a> flash. Samsung&#39;s design shows upper teeth and tongue.

Meaning widely varies, but commonly conveys such feelings as sadness, disappointment, fear, and anxiety. Similar to <a href="/sad-but-relieved-face/">😥&nbsp;Sad but Relieved Face</a>, but with a blue head and larger frown.

Not to be confused with <a href="/crying-face/">😢&nbsp;Crying Face</a>, <a href="/sleepy-face/">😪&nbsp;Sleepy Face</a>, or other emojis with tear or sweat droplets. <a href="/microsoft/windows-8.1/anxious-face-with-sweat/">Microsoft</a> and <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/anxious-face-with-sweat/">Samsung</a> previously featured smileys that appeared more excited in expression.

Face with Open Mouth and Cold Sweat

A yellow face with raised eyebrows and a slight frown, shedding a single, blue tear from one eye down its cheek. May convey a moderate degree of sadness or pain, usually less intensely than <a href="/loudly-crying-face/">😭&nbsp;Loudly Crying Face</a>.

Not to be confused with <a href="/sad-but-relieved-face/">😥&nbsp;Sad but Relieved Face</a>, <a href="/sleepy-face/">😪&nbsp;Sleepy Face</a>, or other emojis with tear or sweat droplets. Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/crying-face/">previously featured</a> tears welling up in both eyes.

This emoji has a cat variant, <a href="/crying-cat/">😿&nbsp;Crying Face</a>.

Crying Face

A yellow face with an open mouth wailing and streams of heavy tears flowing from closed eyes. May convey inconsolable grief&nbsp;but also other intense feelings, such as uncontrollable laughter, pride or overwhelming joy.

In March 2021,&nbsp;😭&nbsp;Loudly Crying Face became&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/loudly-crying-becomes-top-tier-emoji/">the most popular emoji on Twitter</a>. It held this position until January 2022, when&nbsp;<a href="/face-with-tears-of-joy/">😂 Face with Tears of Joy</a> <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/tears-of-joy-just-about-returns-as-twitters-top-emoji/">returned as the top emoji on the platform</a>.

Loudly Crying Face

A yellow face with a frown and closed, downcast eyes, as if aching with sorrow or pain. May convey a variety of unhappy emotions, including disappointment, grief, stress, regret, and remorse.

Similar to <a href="/pensive-face/">😔&nbsp;Pensive Face</a>, but with a sadder, more hurt expression. Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.1/disappointed-face/">previously featured</a> an expression closer to <a href="/confused-face/">😕&nbsp;Confused Face</a>.

Disappointed Face

An upset person, frowning with dismay. Gender is not specified,&nbsp;but generally shown&nbsp;as a woman.

Previously displayed as a man on <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-7.0/person-frowning/">Samsung</a> and <a href="/microsoft/windows-10/person-frowning/">Microsoft</a> platforms.

Person Frowning

A flower that has wilted, or is dying. Generally depicted as a limp, faded red rose drooping over the to the right on a dried-out,&nbsp;green stem, shedding a petal.

May be used to express such sad sentiments as heartbreak, though sometimes with a sense of irony. Sometimes&nbsp;used to represent a rose or other flower, with positive connotations.

Not to be confused with <a href="/rose/">🌹 Rose</a>.

WhatsApp&#39;s flower suggests a wilted <a href="/sunflower/">🌻 Sunflower</a>;&nbsp;Twitter&#39;s a&nbsp;<a href="/tulip/">🌷 Tulip</a>, as <a href="/microsoft/windows-10-anniversary-update/wilted-flower/">Microsoft</a> and <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/wilted-flower/">Samsung&#39;s</a> previously did. <a href="/facebook/2.0/wilted-flower/">Facebook&#39;s</a> flower was previously orange.

Wilted Flower

A sun with a smiling face, as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_of_May">Sun of May</a>. Generally depicted as a golden-yellow disc with a smiling, often human face with a nose, radiating triangular&nbsp;rays, representing the sun&#39;s heat and light.

May be used to represent the sun more generally. Also used to represent sunny, warm, or hot weather and various positive and happy (sunny) feelings.

The Unicode Consortium approved the following characters as part of <a href="http://www.unicode.org/versions/Unicode7.0.0/">Unicode 7.0</a>, released on June 16, 2014.&nbsp;Support for these emoji characters rely on updates from platform vendors such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft.

Initially, 250&nbsp;new characters in Unicode 7.0 were approved for emoji presentation, however this was later reduced to 103 Standard Additions which are listed below. The other characters remain part of Unicode, but are not recommended&nbsp;to be included as emojis.

The exception to this was the <a href="/left-speech-bubble/" title="🗨 Left Speech Bubble">Left Speech Bubble</a>, and as such wasn&#39;t initially specified on other platforms as an emoji. A later-accepted&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.emojipedia.org/diverse-spy-proposal/">proposal</a>&nbsp;updated this.

Samsung devices use <a href="https://news.samsung.com/global/samsungs-emoji-suite-makes-for-a-more-emotional-digital-world">their own emoji designs</a>&nbsp;which are different to those used on other <a href="/google/">Android devices</a>. These&nbsp;glossy emojis&nbsp;appear on devices such as the Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note series and are updated as part of the Samsung One UI interface layer (previously Samsung Experience, before that Samsung TouchWiz)&nbsp;which runs on top of Android.

Note that Samsung users may see select emojis display as their <a href="/google/">Google</a>&nbsp;set design. This is due to <a href="https://blog.emojipedia.org/faster-emoji-updates-on-the-way-for-android-apps/">Android AppCompat</a>, which will display a Google emoji design within an app or web platform&nbsp;when a Samsung device has not yet been updated to support that particular emoji.

Since the introduction of Samsung&#39;s emoji set in <a href="/samsung/touchwiz-2.0">2014</a>, various Unicode characters that have not been recommended to have emoji presentation have nevertheless been given a colorful emoji design on Samsung platforms. Samsung Emoji List — Emojis for Samsung Galaxy, Galaxy Note, and Galaxy Z Fold [Updated 2024]

First released in July 2024 for Samsung&#39;s Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 devices, the&nbsp;One UI 6.1.1&nbsp;began its broader rollout in early September 2024.

This update revised the designs of every&nbsp;<a href="/flags">🎌 Flag</a> emoji and various emojis from the&nbsp;<a href="/objects">💡 Objects</a> and&nbsp;<a href="/symbols">💕 Symbols</a>&nbsp;categories.

One UI 6.1.1

Beginning its rollout for select Samsung devices on 28 March 2024, Samsung&#39;s One UI 6.1&nbsp;revised a considerable number of previously available emoji designs.

Many emojis had subtle modifications made to their outline, contrast, and shading, including the majority of&nbsp;<a href="/people">🧑 People</a> emojis. Meanwhile, many emojis within&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href="/travel-places">🚀 Travel &amp; Places</a> and&nbsp;<a href="/objects">💡 Objects</a> categories were given more extensive redesigns.&nbsp;

One UI 6.1

Beginning its rollout for select Samsung devices on 30&nbsp;October 2023, Samsung&#39;s One UI 6.0&nbsp;featured a completely new design style for the majority of the vendor&#39;s emojis.

All smiley, food, and animal emoji designs have been revised in this update, as have the majority of the people emojis.

This is the most significant revision of the vendor&#39;s emoji set since&nbsp;February 2018&#39;s&nbsp;<a href="https://emojipedia.org/samsung/experience-9.0">Experience 9.0</a> update, which introduced a significant number of design revisions that were consistent with those used on other platforms.

This update also introduced support for the 2023 <a href="https://emojipedia.org/emoji-15.1">Emoji 15.1</a> recommendation list.
