Earth Globe Europe-Africa

A classic alien face. The oval, bare head of a gray or green alien with large black eyes and a slight, friendly smile.&nbsp;Samsung depicts nostrils, Facebook a nose.

May represent extraterrestrial life or topics concerning outer space, but commonly conveys a playful sense of weirdness&nbsp;or strangeness, as if someone or something is&nbsp;out&nbsp;there or&nbsp;from another planet.

Available as an Apple&nbsp;<a href="/animoji/">Animoji</a>.

Apple previously displayed&nbsp;a similar looking&nbsp;<a href="http://blog.getemoji.com/post/116839074745/what-does-the-alien-emoji-mean-on-ios-its-an">alien head in a box</a> as a placeholder for an unknown emoji, but now shows a boxed question mark.

Extraterrestrial Alien

A male astronaut or cosmonaut shown wearing a&nbsp;space suit and helmet.

Man Astronaut

A female&nbsp;astronaut or cosmonaut shown wearing a&nbsp;space suit and helmet.

Woman Astronaut

A giraffe, the tallest animal on Earth, with spots and a long neck. Generally depicted in yellow or tan in full profile on all fours facing left, with distinctive brown spots and small, horn-like structures.

Samsung&rsquo;s designs feature a giraffe face looking straight ahead. Facebook&rsquo;s design <a href="/facebook/2.1/giraffe/">previously</a> featured only a giraffe face, as did <a href="/microsoft/windows-10-fall-creators-update/giraffe/">Microsoft&#39;s</a>.

Giraffe Face

An elephant, the largest land animal on Earth,&nbsp;with a long trunk and, often, tusks. Generally depicted in gray in full profile on all fours facing left, with tusks and prominent ears, as an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_elephant">African</a> (vs. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asian_elephant">Asian</a>) elephant.

<a href="/google/android-7.0/elephant/">Google</a> and <a href="/facebook/2.0/elephant/">Facebook&rsquo;s</a> elephants were previously blue in color. Samsung&rsquo;s design <a href="/samsung/experience-9.0/elephant/">previously</a> featured a cartoon-styled elephant with a red blanket&nbsp;on its back and blowing a <a href="/red-heart/">red heart</a> from its trunk.

Elephant

A rhinoceros, a large mammal with one or two massive horns on its nose. Generally shown in light gray with two horns, depicted in full profile on all fours or as a rhinoceros head looking left.

Resembles the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_rhinoceros">white</a> or <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_rhinoceros">black rhinoceros</a>.

Apple, Google, Microsoft, WhatsApp, and Facebook&rsquo;s designs feature the full animal, while&nbsp;Samsung&nbsp;and Twitter&rsquo;s designs feature only the&nbsp;rhinoceros&#39; head.

Facebook&rsquo;s design <a href="/facebook/2.0/rhinoceros/">previously</a> featured just&nbsp;the&nbsp;rhinoceros&#39; head, as did <a href="/google/android-8.0/rhinoceros/">Google&#39;s</a>.

Rhinoceros

A hippopotamus, a squat&nbsp;water mammal with huge jaws. Generally depicted in gray or tan in full profile facing left.

Google&rsquo;s design used to&nbsp;feature&nbsp;a purple, cartoon-styled hippopotamus face. Facebook&rsquo;s hippopotamus is opening massive jaws, revealing tusks.

Silhouette of Japan

A magnetic compass, as used for navigation. Generally depicted in a silver or gold case with a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compass_rose">compass rose</a> and a red-tipped needle. Commonly used for various content concerning traveling and exploring as well as metaphorical compasses (e.g., moral compass).

Facebook&rsquo;s markings include the initials of the four cardinal directions,&nbsp;north, south, east, and west. Not to be confused with various <a href="/search/?q=clock">clock</a>&nbsp;or timepiece emojis.

A castle, in a style&nbsp;that can be found in <a href="/flag-france/" title="🇫🇷 Flag for France">France</a>&nbsp;and other parts of <a href="/flag-european-union/" title="🇪🇺 Flag for European Union">Europe</a>.

European Castle

The <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milky_Way">Milky Way</a> &ndash; a galaxy of&nbsp;billions of stars that includes&nbsp;our own&nbsp;solar system and <a href="/globe-showing-americas/">planet earth</a>.

Shown by many platforms as a night sky, with silhouettes of mountains or hills in the foreground.

Milky Way

A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comet">comet</a>, an icy, rocky space object that can form a tail of gas and dust when near the sun. Generally depicted as an icy-blue comet, as if streaking downwards in a night sky.

May be used for meteors and other celestial bodies, as well as for content concerning space more generally. Also occasionally used for flair or flourish.

Not to be confused with <a href="/shooting-star/">🌠 Shooting Star</a>, though their applications may overlap.

Samsung&rsquo;s comet is fiery-red, as is Apple&rsquo;s, which appears to be ascending. WhatsApp&rsquo;s comet is depicted in a starry, night sky, Apple&rsquo;s comet was <a href="/apple/ios-9.1/comet/">previously</a> descending and blue.

Comet

A banded stack of euro banknotes, the paper currency of the <a href="/flag-european-union/">European Union</a> (EU). Color and detail vary across platforms, but shown with the euro sign, &euro;. Commonly used for various content concerning wealth and money, not restricted to the EU.

Some vendors, including Apple and Samsung, depict green &euro;100 bills; others, including Google, WhatsApp, and Facebook, depict blue &euro;20 bills. Facebook additionally features the <a href="/flag-european-union/">EU flag</a>.
